Jamie was an excellent choice for our occasion! We had an 80th birthday party for my mom with 25 guests at our home. Jamie was wonderful as we planned a menu for a sit down dinner party. She was on time, food display was beautiful including flowers, and food was excellent. We particularly enjoyed the sliced steak, horsey sauce, and onion jam. After dinner, Jamie returned, packed up left overs for us, and cleaned up. It really was nice for me to relax and visit with company while enjoying a delicious meal with family and friends. She is a real pro and very reasonably priced. Don't hesitate to hire her!!

Ms. Marie is very sweet and will work with you to try and do what is necessary from beginning to end. The only part of the Wedding food that wasnt exactly like what we hoped it would be was one of the appetizers (mini biscuits with ham) but maybe we should have clarified how it was done before choosing it. The only other thing was the beef I was told by some people was rather tough. However, the salmon was fantastic as well as the mashed potatoe bar. The sweet tea was just like I like it!!! Other than that we were very pleased with her service and staff was friendly.

This mother and daughter team is highly professional. They are very efficient, yet personable at the same time. All of this before you even mention the food. It was delectable. We were very much pleased especially in knowing that usually with large party catering the food can sometimes lack that certain touch of love. We definitely felt and tasted that! lol.. (as did our guests). My new husband doesn't even eat cake but he asked for seconds lol! I would recommend them for any event. I think that I thanked them about 20 times! They deserved it!! And thank you again!

I catered for a party of 20 or so in my home. Guests raved over Pam's homemade cornbread, Mac and cheese, chicken salad and red velvet cupcakes. All were amazing. And she was very kind and not pushy or rushed at all. I highly recommend her :)

I love this little sweet spot in Chester. Homemade food everyday and catering when I'm on the go. The quality and service are fantastic and keep me going back and referring them to my friends and colleagues. If they don't have it, they'll find it for you. Give them a try and tell your friends, you'll be glad you did!

Monique planned a surprise birthday party for me at work and it was a beautiful event! She nailed down my interests by doing a Kate Spade themed party. The flowers were all handmade and the food and dessert spread was on point. She took the time to create personalized signs and coordinated all of the decorations including the dishes that the candy and food sat on. If you’re looking for a planner who really listens to what you want and can pull together your interests and visions into a single event, Monique should be your go to! I would HIGHLY recommend Special Occasions by Design!

She did a perfect job with helping me select catering items for a bridal shower, keeping the costs low, and helping me organize the event. She showed up on time and set up all the food for me. She cut the veggie lasagna and started all the burners. She was incredibly pleasant and friendly! It was a perfect experience and the guests loved the food!! I will definitely use her catering services again!

Elegant Budget Weddings organized and provided all decorations for my bridal shower in June 2016. The theme was an elegant bridal tea party. For the event, Natasha transformed my backyard into a gorgeous venue, something I would not have imagined at all. Walking into the yard and seeing the flowy entrance, the beautifully decorated table settings, the appetizing centerpieces for the tables, the dazzling dessert table was such an experience. I really want to say the bridal shower was a dream come true, but I cannot -- it was so much better than anything I dreamt. Thank you for your hard work, Natasha!

I highly recommend Chef Jenn for any catering needs. I rented a house on Lake Anna for my husband's 50th Birthday celebration. Chef Jenn prepared breakfast for our stay with made to order eggs, bacon, sautéed potatoes, waffles and fresh fruit and homemade banana muffins. That was just a little extra that we threw in at the last minute. Our main use of a personal chef's service was for a formal birthday dinner. Chef Jenn prepared a gourmet feast for our guest that consisted of Tunisian Braised Short Ribs, Jumbo prawns and seared sea scallops with Garlic , Rissotto and Red potatoes. Topped off with Buttercream Rich Chocolate Mousse with Sweetened Whip Cream and Fresh Berries. The meal was excellent and Chef Jenn and her husband were a delight. They prepared, served and cleaned. My guest were very impressed. I did I forget to mention the fresh fruit and cheese tray with wine that we had prior to the dinner. I only wish she lived closer so that I could take advantage of her weekly meal preps. I will definitely use her services again.

Jackie, I don't know where to begin to tell you how much we appreciated working with you to make this day very special for Sally and John. You were so accommodating and easy to work with, right from the start. Especially since we were changing caterers in a short time, due to the medical emergency with our previous booked catering company, canceling a week prior to the event. The food was out of this world! From the tasty and elegant hors d'oeuvres and full bar service, the table set with the wonderful bread and salad, to the incredible dinner and finally the fabulous cheeseboard and delicious wedding cake, we couldn't have asked for anything better! ALL of our guests raved about their meal and mentioned how lovely everything was presented. It was the best food we have ever had at a wedding!! Your staff was so hard working and accommodating and ready to make everything perfect for us. We will never forget this special event in our lives and you helped make it that way! We would highly recommend Over the Top Catering and you, Jackie, to anyone planning a wedding or special event. It honestly could not have been better! Thank you so much for everything. My husband will be calling you about his corporate holiday dinner, next week. We will email you some pictures a soon as we get them from the photographer. Sincerely, Sarah Mother of bride

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

        • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
        • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
        • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
        • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
        • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
        • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
