Scotty really cares about his students learning and success. I switched my major to math from engineering on my 3rd meter in college. I struggled a lot in the beginning but Scotty helped me through Introduction to proof class. He explained concepts clearly and provided multiple examples to help me understand the course. He is very patient and willing to work with you until you fully understand him. Not only he has knowledge of higher math courses but also has knowledge to how to teach higher math concepts to tutees. Thanks to him, I graduated with math degree and currently I am in a master program in math.

We have gone through three tutors and none of them have been able to connect and communicate with our child(12 year old boy)like Hannah has. She is innovative, sharp, disciplined, very engaging, and trustworthy. We gave her instructions at first, and then, we told her to run with it--she was prepared to run with it. We are extremely blessed by her decision to work with our child. We pray that she will be his tutor indefinitely--that's how awesome she is!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.
