RJA Floors installed about 920 sq ft of hardwood floors, plus 13 stairs and two half landings in my house. The timeframe and cost quoted to complete the project were right on. Robert and his crew are hardworking and dependable; they showed up and made progress every day. With any major improvement project, odd items/problems arise - Robert was able to solve them easily. I'd recommend hiring RJA Floors for hardwood installations. I am planning on hiring Robert for another smaller project in the near future.

Genaro moved my last boxes from one fourth floor condo to the next also on the fourth floor. Although he did not have the second mover as expected, he worked fast and efficiently. No complaints!

There are no superlatives to explain the awesome experience we had with Matt. On time every single day, worked all weekend as well and was such a wonderful craftsman. He removed all our old wood floor skim coated it and laid wood look porcelain tile in both the living and dining rooms. It is gorgeous! He is meticulous and professional as well as reasonable in his price! I will recommend him to everyone I know and I am already arranging for another job for him at my house! I can rate him excellent plus in every aspect . Photos to follow tomorrow! Thank you so much Matt ❤️

Could not be happier with Patrick and his work. Put in new hardwood floors in our house. Patrick was completely transparent with his pricing, no extras, no bs. He accommodated our tight timeline perfectly, working weekends to fit us in. The floors look amazing, oak with a dark walnut stain. Recommending him to my friends and loved ones.

A truly wonderful experience overall with Oscar and his crew. From Tuesday morning till Friday evening, a crew of 4 worked quietly and diligently to paint a 3000 sq. ft house townhouse, and install hardwood floor on the main level. Every little work-related issue I had during these four days was handled quickly and professionally. The communication with Oscar and his supervisory team was excellent. There were two walk-throughs on Friday. Minor issues came up and they were immediately corrected. We are very happy with the work done by Oscar and his crew. They deliver quality like no other; so much that I will consider him again for future projects. Also, please make sure you ask him about any discounts if you are paying cash; or, any little extra processing fees if you are paying with a credit card. I had a slight misunderstanding on this point, but they rectified it.

Marcus & his team did a wonderful job painting all four floors of my townhome! I had two colors, one he had to mix himself. He was so careful to ensure it was mixed properly for each wall. Marcus also went out of his way to fix many things - dents in the wall from the banister placements, caulking issues, & they also painted all of the molding that needed touch-ups. I would definitely hire Marcus & his team for any future work!

We had a poorly built roof over our patio that was damaged by the wind. I found kutai enterprises on thumbtack and asked him to come look at the roof and give us an estimate. Not only did he beat the first estimate, but he took a construction disaster and made it into something to be proud to show off. The roof is much safer and definitely more appealing to the eye. Will definitely hire these guys again. Couldn't be more happier with their work. Would definitely recommend kutai enterprises.

We've used Buckeye Construction a couple of times now. John has been very accommodating for timing and logistical issues in dealing with our schedules. The work has been done on time, within budget, and met/exceeded our expectations. We've primarily used him for painting and wall issues, but we have seen his work (e.g., flooring & carpentry) elsewhere and the same level professionalism and quality was present. We would not hesitate to use his services again.

Carlos renovated our whole townhouse, before we put it on the market. He did all the flooring, bathrooms, paint, carpet, and many more. It was so good to work with him. His price was the best and the quality of the work was awesome! He was always available via phone or email which was great too. I would totally work with him again. He made our move from VA to WA much easier and less stressful! Keep up the good work, Carlos!

Rocco has been helping me do small jobs for the last several months. I am greatly impressed by his professionalism. He is very clear about the time it will take to get a job done as well as the cost. He is punctual and cleans the job site when finished. It has truly been a pleasure working with him. Jobs completed are; new light fixtures, new ceiling fans, repair of wood floor, patch, sand and paint a hole in the wall, install a range hood, install curtain rods, install shower doors, and the list can go on. Thank you Rocco!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
