Sebastian M. says, "To work with Royal Construction is a company working out of Trust, Transparency, and Honesty. I usually never make reviews however to take a chance is what I did and I do not regret that decision. I decided to part-take in a Pergola addition to a Patio that Sagi helped incorporate the installation for me and I could not have been more impressed!! Sagi truly made my dreams become a reality by making the space usable, presentable, and functional for family gatherings in my backyard. To enjoy my space to what I have always wanted is something I could not have envisioned myself!! Sagi worked with me at every step, explained the materials to costs and matched the 3D designs shared in the beginning to the final results. I will have to say that I am impressed and love the results!!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

When in doubt, contact the best deck contractors near you and start getting free estimates today.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

How do you find a good carpenter?

To find a good carpenter near you, do the following:

  • Use Thumbtack to find a list of carpenters in your area.
  • Filter the list by selecting a specific carpentry service, such as general carpentry or cabinetry.
  • Identify carpenters who have high ratings.
  • View the carpenters’ profiles and learn more about their specialties.
  • Read their customer reviews and look at photos of their past work.

After you get a good sense of their quality of work, make sure the carpenter has the necessary credentials in your state. Then, request several cost estimates for your project(s).

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Nino and his team were great to work with on our deck remodel project. Nino came out and showed us a variety of options and colors, and listened to our feedback to help us find the best solution. The price was transparent and fair. Once the project started, Nino and team were out at our place every day and finished the project quicker than even the original estimate. It was a pleasure to work with Nino on our new deck.

Excellent deck build...solid construction and work. PM Felipe and head builder Alex were very pleasant and so hardworking. Would recommend highly for our AMAZING deck! It is so solid it added to the overall structural stability to our home. Some minor issues with the fencing surrounding the deck. Felipe will be checking this out and fixing as needed. Buddy (the owner) and the PM Felipe very responsive. Will add review edits as needed when the project is done to 100% satisfaction. More expensive than other estimates, but we chose to pay more for a guarantee (10 years) as well as a DETAILED list of materials and cost for all parts and laborvof the project which many other companies either did not furnish or balked when asked to do so. Also this company was fully licensed, bonded, insured, and answered all questions fully before, during and after.

Nelson crushed it! He and his crew did a fantastic job with my new back deck. It’s about 30’x15’ with a 20’ railing and steps on the remainder of the area. He was in constant contact with my wife and I with the progress of the work. He sent texts and pictures to update me with potential problem areas because my 1968 had some issues. I knew I had the right contractor because he had a vision for my deck within 20 minutes of giving us a quote. He wrapped the trex with cedar boards and framed in the galvanized steel railing with cedar as well. Look him up, you won’t be disappointed. Best, Dan and Abby

Chris and his team were true professionals who knew what they were doing. They were very easy to work with right from the start when they first visited. They gave us a quote on time unlike most other folks we worked with, and were pretty reasonable. Chris was also very patient as we went back and forth on our requirements and design a few times. Even till the very last day he was accommodating and helped make changes like adding an additional beam or changing the step length. They were quick yet thorough with their work and finished the project in time for our timelines. We needed the deck by a certain date for an event and they went out of their way to finish it ahead of time. I highly recommend Chris and his crew. We’ll definitely be calling them for any other deck related projects.

Landed in bad place with the trust on thumbtack. The initially agreed to complete the project for 12k (which includes $1300 to wards cement in the backyard) and asked additional 1k for increasing 2 feet for the lenth of the deck.( additional 2 feet is because they couldn't see where the deck shoudl start and later comes with more ideas and put me in a situation as If I increased the length of the deck and asked for additioanl money ) During initial discussions they agreed me to pay 5k upfront and 5k after the work is completed but kept asking money everytime giving me all the excuses they have. I stood behind them for everthing they asked and paid them the money in advance before completing the work based on their promises. As soon as they got the agreed money 11k they stopped showing for two consective weeks and later this week started asking for more money (additioanl 2k) to complete the work. Which I agreed to pay because my back yead looked a mess with parts every where. To my surprise they started asking for more money to buy additioanl material. They don't do the proper assesment before the work starts and does all the false promises before hand and never stand on their words. I don't understand how in the world you can ask 12k before the work started and push the customer to 19k after half work and threaten to leave in middle if not paying for whatever they ask. Never had this hirrofic experience before. Started the work with 12k asstimate and took me to 15k (which I agreed) and then to 19k now which I haven't agreed and they just left my place with all the mess laying around. I am in a bad place to find a pro to complete my half done work. Lost my $11500 for a unfinished work and feeling very bad with no hope. we had to shut our backyard untill this is fixed, not safe or kids or elders with no fence and things laying around. The pics tells you the situation.

PNW Home Improvement is an amazing outfit - Derek has helped me with a variety of projects over the past year, everything from a new deck to flood mitigation, drywall buildback and tile installation. In every case, Derek and team are skilled, detail oriented, fast and fairly priced. He is a clear communicator, and makes it apparent who/when/how the work will occur + how it may impact our schedules and time at home. He also is clear about the quotes and risks to the figures; there are always surprised with these projects, but Derek makes it clear where they could occur and the implications of them. If they do occur he makes sure you understand what is occurring, the implications and different paths forward. Cannot recommend Derek more highly - great guy, great outfit, someone I really trust when I need help with my home.
