We had a 9 person holiday dinner party and Paul and Stephanie were our wonderful chef and assistant/server. Paul was responsive from my initial Thumbtack inquiry. The food was creative and exceptionally tasting! Highly recommend them and I am looking forward to talking to them about the possibility of catering my son's rehearsal dinner next year.

Thyme Well Spent Catering was outstanding and all we were hoping for! From start to finish Chantel was responsive and courteous. She provided a large range of options, was clear on all points, very willing to work to accommodate the needs of our event and her pricing was fair. The day of the event Chantel arrived on time and provided exactly what had been discussed. She not only spent the time to execute the delivery and ensure proper set-up, but remained to assure all was well and everyone was pleased. The feedback on the food was that it was DELICIOUS! :) Our organization was providing a luncheon for Veteran Patients and not all was as had been communicated. Yet, Chantel worked to adjust and accommodate, her genuine care and concern was evident. We would not hesitate to recommend or hire Thyme Well Spent Catering again!!

Its not an exaggeration to say that having good food at our wedding was at the top of our “wedding wants” list. We were having our dream wedding and finding food that would please us and our guests – all of whom are serious eaters – was an area of concern for us…right up until we had our tasting with Francisco ( K & F catering ) . After our menu tasting, we knew that if nothing else went well, the food would be fantastic! But in reality, we were wrong. The food – and the service and the servers – were so far beyond fantastic! We cannot find words to sufficiently describe just how delectable, delicious, scrumptious, amazing the food was for our cocktail hour and reception! And the entire staff was wonderful! We felt blessed to have each of them present for the entire time they were with us. We cannot thank Francisco enough and K & F Catering . He is very , very helpful , very open minded , so easy to work with👌, he knows what he is doing , our guest are still talking about the food and say that they had never had great food at the wedding like ours . Thank you for making our day very special . I wish if could add pictures of our wedding food .

Everything was easy from the start with Nola. We were living in Denver and planning a Seattle wedding on a tight budget. It can be hard finding all the right vendors from a different state as we discovered but wasn't once we got on Thumbtack and Nola responded to our catering request. Her menus were the right mix of interesting, fresh and summery with NW focus. Our tasting weekend in Seattle started out rough with a couple other companies that were not as we expected and then we arrived at Nola. From the moment we set foot in her place she exceeded our expectations for food and professionalism. First the food was fresh and delish! We had Salmon with a lovely mango-kiwi salsa, mini peppers stuffed with a blend of goat cheese, asparagus and herbs and her mixed greens with candied pecans, pecorino and pears. All was made to order for us by Nola in her kitchen as we dinned at her table set like a fancy restaraunt overlooking Puget sound. The presentation was simple yet beautiful. She uses the natural food colors to set the plate for an appealing and tasty treat for the senses. She is very organized and with many years of experience. She truly enjoys her career and wants you to have the best. We were impressed with her attention to details of the wedding from the ceremony through the reception. She was genuinely interested in creating a perfect day with us. She was a perfect fit for us because she was not only flexible with our needs but a great resource for ideas. We felt very comfortable and relaxed throughout the whole process with Nola. I would recommend her to anyone. Thank you again Nola for making our celebration of love perfect!!! - Morada and Brandon

Chef Emme Catering Co. catered a beautiful office Thanksgiving lunch for us in Downtown Seattle. It was very quick and easy to book the services and finalize a menu and required services. They were on time and efficient setting up. Most importantly, the food was the best catered food we've all tasted! We will be using Chef Emme again for our catering needs and recommend their services to anyone wanting quality service and food.

Couldn't be more happier with my decision to go with Dogfather catering. Stephen went above and beyond to make sure our wedding went perfectly. He was more than happy to accommodate all our wants and needs and the whole process was stress free. Everyone loved his pizzas and the gourmet hot dog cart. Not to mention all his salads are delicious and a huge hit. Aside from his food, his staff is friendly and professional, they did all the could to make things run smoothly. I would highly recommend him to anyone and I still cannot thank him enough for all his hard work!

We operate Kruger Escapes, an adventure sailing charter business based in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. Two years ago we established a partnership with Nichole of Island Chef Services. In preparation for each of our sailing trips, we provide Nichole with detailed food surveys from each of our guests. Nichole then works her magic, always demonstrating incredible thoughtfulness, planning, preparation and execution. From the food surveys, she prepares detailed menu plans, shops for all the food, then fully preps each meal (for up to seven days!). As a final step she provides us with detailed instructions on how to finish preparing each meal and plate it beautifully. This relationship allows us to quickly prepare and serve freshly cooked meals while underway AND maintain a gourmet food experience for our guests that is specifically catered to their tastes. On every sailing trip with Nichole's food, our guests express delight over the menu and surprise at just how much delicious food is on board the boat. Our guests' comments include statements like, "How did she know my favorite dinner?!", "This is beautiful!" or "This is our most favorite way to eat. We want to meet Nichole!" On a smaller scale, last Christmas we hired Nichole to make an apple pie for our family dinner. My dad is NOT easy to impress with pie, and apple is his favorite. It was a little heartbreaking to have to tell him I wasn't the one who baked the pie he was so happy with... and then he kept saying, "This Nichole really knows how to bake an apple pie." We love you Nichole!!

We used 314 Pie for catering our wedding and we were very happy we chose them. They responded very quickly by email and phone whenever we had a question, arrived in plenty of time, and were very professional and polite serving guests. Also, they were able to serve all of our 100+ guests very quickly. The pies were very delicious, we and all of our guests were very happy. Highly recommend!

Cassandra and her team were amazing! She was so personable and such an ease to work and communicate with. The day of the event (a wedding) she showed up early and even helped us set up the venue before heading off to prep food. We opted for an itialian buffet and every dish was tasty, flavorful and spot on! I did select a couple gluten free options and having someone who is herself gluten free I think was a great choice! Cassandra knows just what to do with gluten free paths and our guests didn't even notice the difference. We will absolutely refer Cassandra to anyone in need of a caterer.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

        • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
        • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
        • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
        • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
        • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
        • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
