Al is a wonderful tutor! He knowledgeable and personable. My daughter is usually very shy and has been taking online high school classes. Math has been difficult to do this way but, through her tutoring lessons with Al, she's regaining her confidence. He is very patient and does an excellent job at explaining the lessons. I couldn't recommend him enough to anyone needing additional Algebra help!

Will really helped my 4th grade son get back on track with math when he began struggling last semester. He ended the school year strong, with assignments provided by Will to keep him on track through the summer. Definitely recommend!

Over the past six years, Alan has tutored both of my boys in math and science. Alan has been extremely helpful in supporting the instruction from the school. We have found Alan to be pleasant to work with and flexible in scheduling times to meet. Alan knows the material well, and can break it down so that the student can learn the concepts. We have made several referrals to him since he has been exceptional in his work with our boys.

I found Louisa's tutoring services very helpful and insightful. I'm a Ph.D.student in psychology writing on challenging topics and Louisa was able to provide me sound, constructive feedback on my writing. Some simple exercises during our session provided me tools and new ways to approach the writing in creative ways. I think Louisa has a good ability to evaluate a writer's ability, and then apply the appropriate techniques and lessons to bring the writer along. She did this for me.

Salma Arraf-Baker's instruction in beginning Hebrew was extremely helpful to me given the short time I had before going on a trip. I appreciated her attempt at having me speak in simple sentences from the very start. Her friendly, yet professional approach did much to make me feel at ease.

Alexander has been tutoring my 4th grade son and my 6th grade son once a week since September 2013. He has worked with them on their writing -- including grammar, different styles or writing and reading comprehension. The work varies. Alexander is always prepared with a lesson plan but is flexible enough to incorporate the boys' school work and interests. So, they might edit a paper for school one week, work on word choice and parts of speech another week and then write a screen play the third week. Alexander is an exceptional tutor. He relates to the boys but he is also smart enough and firm enough to keep them interested and motivated for the full hour. So the boys are happy to have him as a tutor and they are learning a lot. Alexander is very easy to work with. He is a real professional. He is always on time. He never cancels at the last minute and he communicates far in advance on the very rare occasions that he has a conflict. I wholeheartedly recommend Alexander if you are looking for an intelligent and dedicated writing tutor.

We had Bruce Winter as the English tutor for our homeschooling group for about two years. He had to teach 3 different groups every day, at kindergarten and elementary level. He was always well prepared in his attitude as well as the teaching materials. He kept a very good relationship with the students and the parents, willing to listen and communicate. Being very patient and articulative, he was able to explain ideas and concepts clearly. The children enjoyed his lessons a lot. I highly recommend him for his tutoring service!

Ethan is a great tutor to my 8th grade son. He prepared my son for ACT and SAT tests. Thanks to Ethan, my son got good scores on these tests and was accepted by talented searches like TiP Duke, CTY John Hopkins and Robinson UW. Ethan also provided general consulting about school classes that he recommends to take, interesting magazines and articles. My son started to read Wired and other magazines after Ethan motivated him. Also, Ethan is very responsive and flexible with schedule. His unique benefit that he comes to your place, so you don't need to drive your kiddo anywhere. I highly recommend Ethan for tutoring for SAT/ACT tests, high school prep, math.

Thanks Jessica for teaching our 2 kids. She offers violin lessons for older one and piano lessons for the younger one. We had lots of trouble with our previous teachers. Jessica knows how to deal with them not practicing and help them set goals for their music learning. Our 2 kids also have different personality and talent level and she seems to tailor her style accordingly. I would recommend her as a piano and violin teacher.

I highly recommend Mark Brown for tutoring. We were referred to Mark Brown when my daughter was a junior in high school. He helped my daughter to become an organized writer, helped her prepare for her SAT'S and I am proud to say she was accepted to all 4 of the universities she applied to. My daughter currently attends the UW and I credit Mark in not only helping her boost her testing skills but her academic confidence as well.

Alison is very energetic and has a lot of patience. She teaches English lessons very creatively. Each student has different skill levels, but even at the highest level I have never gotten bored. I like that she is able to teach beginners and advanced students at the same time. Her lessons are really fun. She knows our weakness right away so she can best help us. She is very enthusiastic about her job. She is the most excellent tutor I have ever met in my life. Even though the lessons were early in the morning, I was always so excited for them that I never missed one. I have more confidence speaking English after I took lessons from her.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
