Joshua C. says, "Wow! I moved here from Seattle/Singapore and have not seen one person or business have as much professionalism as this one person does. Her work was beautiful and perfection, she problem solved an issue that came up during installation from the manufacturers….. but the one thing she did that NO ONE in this business (here) has done, she did not over charge because of where we live, other contractors should take notes from her, and as usual girls do it better then the average male. I will only hire from this one person, she killed it! Hire this person if your looking to get work done on your home, she 100 times better than anyone or anything in this town."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

Richard is awesome. Efficient and friendly. Solved my problem for a fraction of the cost demanded by so-called professional electricians. I would highly recommend his services to anyone.

E Line Electric added 2 new outlets in my bedroom. Eddie was prompt, professional and his prices were fair. My home is older which posed challenges with the wiring and installation but he took the time he needed to explain what he was doing and to do the job properly. He even vacuumed up the mess and touched up the walls. Next time I need an electrician, I’ll call E Line Electric and Eddie.

Stan came out and provided me a bid to run power to my steel building. He explained everything in detail and his price was a few hundred dollars less and he was doing more then the first bid I got. Stan then provided me a bid to install 20 recessed lights through out my house. His crew came out a few days later and installed the cam lights. His electricians showed up on time, were very virtuous and professional. They ran into a snag installing a few of lights due to the lay out of the studs in the ceiling. It took them a few hours longer and the price remained the same. As soon as my building is complete, Stan and his crew will be back out to connect power and install the outlets and lighting. I highly recommend On Point Electric.

Was scheduled for work at 8:30am. I called and texted Dionne several times with no answer until 11:30am saying “van broke down, call u later.” So we schedule a new date for work a week later, same time. I follow up with him two beforehand to try to confirm our appt and he doesn’t answer my calls or texts and doesn’t show up on the appt date. This has delayed me another 2 weeks in a project that is running on tight deadlines. This level of unprofessionalism and general lack of reliability and respect for people’s time is astounding and seems to be a trend amongst contractors on Thumbtack. This is the 3rd electrician that I have scheduled work with who has just flat out gone missing without so much as a courtesy call. Do yourself a favor and don’t hire this guy.

If I could give 10 stars I would!! Douglas is simply top notch! I have worked with many pros over the years and I have rarely been as impressed as I was with Douglas. He has the rare quality of a pro who takes pride in his workmanship and believe me that is hard to find these days! I hired him to do phase one of my lighting project. Part of this phase entailed switching out lights in my spare bedroom, my office, my laundry room and my walk-in closet. The lights in my office/spare bedroom were straight forward and presented no issues. The lights in my laundry room and walk-in closet are crystal flush mounts that required hanging each crystal strand by hand. These things were attached by small "O" rings and were not fun to hang but Douglas has the patience of an absolute saint. It didn't phase him at all and didn't mind hanging all of these for me. Another part of this lighting phase was to replace my bedroom ceiling fan. This was a little more challenging as he had to hang the mounting bracket outside of the existing lighting box. Again, didn't faze him whatsoever. The final part of this lighting project is where Douglas earns his 10 stars. I have a hallway with 3 recessed lights that are all on the same switch. I decided I wanted to hang a crystal chandelier in the middle light, and I wanted a light switch with a dimmer that controlled the chandelier independent from the other 2 recessed lights. This required a new switch installation/wired and the installation of a conversion kit to convert the recessed light box to a standard one. All went well except when it came time to hang the light fixture. The canopy didn't fit neatly into the conversion box, which created challenges when it came to leveling. As if that wasn't bad enough the manufacturer did not design this canopy to fit over the conversion box. Douglas had to redesign this thing so that it would fit over that box. It took a trip to Home Depot and approximately 3 hours for him to make this thing work, but he did it!!! After he was done with that craziness then we had to hang all of the crystals, but these were much easier than the 2 previous crystal lights he hung. I have worked with 2 other electricians, and I am fairly confident that neither one of them would have been able to install this chandelier so I'm so grateful I found him. I can say with certainty that if you do not hire Douglas to do your electrical work you are doing yourself a disservice. I have one more lighting phase to do in my house and you can bet I will be Douglas to finish this up for me.
