My overall experience working with Matt was great. He arrived 10 minutes early (which was nice) and got to work right away. We're very happy with the new flooring he installed. We'll definitely be reaching out to him for future projects.

Hello, My sister recommended me to have GTC/Steamatic do repairs painting and mold removal for our house. Most of the mold was located in a closet off the kitchen and we wanted the first floor painted. The job was done in about 3 weeks as they had to rebuild an archway from the living room to dining room. We are very happy with all the work done and Bo gave us the best price with a bundle discount compared to the other contractors. Otherwise we wouldn't have gotten to rebuild the archway. My new furniture arrives next week and it looks like a total remodel I highly recommend Bo Tony and Marina for any project you've got going on in your home!

I called late one evening to have my kitchen floor redone. The next day They brought me several different samples and the entire job was done the following day! Within 48 hours of the first phone call I made the job was cleaned up and completed in the most professional manor in I’ve seen! I wish every company carried as much pride in their work as Simes flooring.

This was a well managed, positive customer service experience. I was able to choose new flooring while in my home comparing the samples alongside my furniture and existing floorboards. Dave, the owner, was very knowledgeable and helpful in making my decision. He also had suggestions during the process which made the project outcome more aesthetically pleasing. AND did not cost more in the end! The installation team was very friendly, respectful and had a positive work ethic. The outcome was exceeded my expectations. I love my new floor!

Inititally Peter bid on a job to tile our kitchen floor, but after giving us his background and full credentials (unsolicited at our first meeting, which was greatly appreciated!), we asked him to bid on our whole kitchen and bathroom job - painting cabinets, trim, doors, walls, tiling floor, installing back splash and a few other little jobs along the way that went with it. His estimate was VERY fair and detailed, and he provided a lot of explanation behind the costs, so nothing was hidden. We knew from that point on that Peter is an honest, hard working guy that we needed to hire. And we are soo glad we did! He was extremely meticulous, enthusiastic, professional, flexible (we often times had a house full of kids and he wasn't phased by it), and involved. He cleaned up every night after a long day of work so we were able to use our space during the remodel, and he shared with us along the way what was going to happen next. His estimate said he would finish in 3 weeks and he did!!! And we did add on a few additional tasks from the initial estimate but he still finished on time and the work is beautiful. He takes such pride in his work and it shows. The quality is outstanding and I cannot say enough positive things about Peter and his work. We have already passed his name along to two friends, and plan to use him again for any and all of our home remodels/updates (which may happen sooner than we planned after seeing how great our new kitchen and bathroom look!!). If you want an honest, communicative, hard worker with high quality results, Peter Halper is your guy!!! We consider ourselves truly blessed to have met him!

Trent and Jacob are amazing!! They do great work for a great value. I ended up having them do more than I expected. They are all around great handymen/carpenters. They pretty much did it all from tile on the kitchen floor to drywall to a new door frame and a roof! Love these guys. I am having them come back to do the rest of my house when I am ready. Highly recommend!

The floors in my home are original hardwood from 1958, and were in pretty rough shape due to age and wear/tear. After reading multiple reviews, I decided to give David a call to request a free estimate on the damage. Being that it was a Friday evening, I did not expect to be able to reach David. David responded back to my message promptly, and to my surprise, he actually came out to speak with me at my home on that Friday night. He spent about an hour at my home and inspected all my flooring, and explained my options from least expensive to most expensive. We set an appointment for the repairs that night. I originally was going to have my floors died with a dark brown stain, but during the sanding process, I saw how beautiful the natural color of the flooring was. At this point I was unsure if I wanted the dark stain or the natural look. David took time out to lay out a sample of the natural coat on my flooring, so I could see the difference between my two options. I opted to proceed with the natural look, which was more cost effective and looked better to me. David even got the job done 1 day early, which was very helpful due to the fact that I had some last minute things to button up on before moving into the house. What really impressed me about David was the fact that I could tell that he has a passion for restoring hardwood flooring and meeting his customer's expectations. My wife and I probably asked him more questions than the average customer and he patiently listened and answered all of them. I would recommend David Passow to family and friends, and will call him if I need any future assistance with flooring. Dan A. Milw, WI

My husband & I had 5 different tilers come to take a look at our floor. Out of the five we bought it down to 2 and then when with Joe/Native Remodels - We have a older (1963) home with many obstacles- Radiant heat/pocket doors/side bathroom, plus we were having 3 rooms that flowed into each other done (650 sq.ft.) They said it would take 6 days - And it did - They did all the tear out and disposal. They worked on saving our existing molding. My tile is beautiful and straight. They were very easy to talk too. Made sure my cat did not get outside. Worked around me, since I work out of the home. Installed a kitchen light for me. Fixed a loose tile on our foyer entrance. The price was overly fair. Very pleased with the work & professional manner. Will be hiring them in the future to remodel our master bath. 1 project at a time. Brigette Begos

From the first time Matt came out to show us samples, I was impressed. He took the time to explain the different flooring, helped with colors and options and made the process so easy. Once work started, I received daily updates from his team on the progress and they kept on schedule. Also every day before they left everything was picked up and swept. It was a wonderful experience. I would recommend Floor Coverings to everyone.

We wanted to replace our 10 year old carpet with hardwood so we had David come in and give us an estimate. He provided us with the pros and cons of the different options. We decided on going with bamboo. Less than a week later we had all 3 rooms fully completed and for a good price. I don't know when they finished exactly, but when I got home from work, I found David waiting for me to get home so that he could make sure that the installation was done to our satisfaction. It is a beautiful floor and very expertly installed. I would recommend Banigan's to anyone in need of new flooring. They do great work and give you exactly what you want without trying to push more on to you than you want or can afford.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
