I have hired Dave for several projects. He has hung siding on my garage, laid Allure flooring in my bathroom, living room and a bedroom. He installed a new bathroom sink and vanity. He has painted most of the rooms in my home and has done some landscape work as well. Dave is very professional. Completes projects in a timely manner, and is meticulous about detail and cleanup. I recommend Dave to anyone looking for handyman projects. Will hire him again for sure!!

Andrew does amazing work. We hired him to hand some new interior doors and replace our ugly, old trim and the final product looks incredible. He is a true craftsman which is hard to find these days. He is meticulous and made sure everything was perfect before he left. He also was kind enough to tighten one of our exterior doors that was giving us problems AND fix our loose garage door opener when he saw it was missing a bolt, all without a second thought. I would highly recommend him for any work projects you have. We liked him so much we will be using him for other future renovations we have planned for layer this year. Thank you so much Andrew!

My wife and I hired Leo recently to help us demo a kitchen and dining room to move forward with a remodel. He showed up on time to give us a bid, which was quite reasonable, then returned the next day to remove 2 large radiators, remove flooring, and move a built in cabinet. He was communicative and professional and we plan to keep using his services throughout our project.

I was very pleased considering I had not used Thumbtack in the past. Jeff and Stephen completed our two bedroom flooring refinishing very professionally and did a wonderful job. They have the right equipment keeping the dust and dirt to a minimum when you are remodeling floors in a home you are living in. I hope to have our additional living space floors re-finished in the future and will bring them back when and if so. You can count on SEC services for a job well done! Thank you!

Cliff did every remodel job we had had done to our home since we first hired him in 2001. Some of the projects were: • New kitchen cabinets sink and appliances • Extra bath in the basement • Remodel of the basement and utility room • Move washer and dryer from utility room to the 2nd floor • Installation of hardware floors in all rooms replacing wall to wall carpet • total remodel of the master bath that included installing a skylight • Ceramic tile installation in front foyer and all bathrooms • Countless maintence projects too numerous to mention Cliff's work is is awesome. He has exceeded our expectations with all the work he has done. We won't even consider using anyone else. Cliff is the ultimate professional. John has done work for me on 2 projects I've had. One he refinished a bathroom for me. He built a walk in shower with tile and a sliding glass door. Also tiled the floor and put in all new vanity and toilet. Turned out fantastic. Get complements all the time. Second project was updating a kitchen with new ceiling and lighting. He does great work and not too expensive. PJ

JC West Contracting remodeled my entire bathroom. Put up tile shower, tile floor, replaced the tub, shower, and smoothed the walls to help make the bathroom look much better. Stayed on deadline with the dates, and the quote was followed as well. Also a very good guy and easy to talk to and work with.

Erik and his partner did an amazing job with our mosaic tile backsplash. They answered my many questions, helped us understand the process, and stayed true to the scope and length of the project. They were in and out in two days time. They respected our home and kept everything neat and tidy, and most importantly it looks great! Can not recommend them more!

Can't say enough about Crompton Customs and owner Jeep. We were in a bind because we had flooring that needed placed over tile and needed someone to complete the job. Jeep came in with such a good quote and offered to come in that week. He came in on Tuesday to look at the job and completed the 3 day job in 2.5 days. There was furniture that needed moved and he did not charge us for this unforseen work. He not only completed the job that was planned, but he also added trim to areas that did not have it before. His custom work is amazing. He completed laminate flooring placement in 4 rooms, 3 closets and the work was so amazing. And Jeep himself is so kind will make sure that you are satisfied before the job is completed. Just an amazing company and will recommend to anyone.

Thomas Elder Construction remodeled my Kitchen and Dining room to make it an open room. They tore down all the walls in the both rooms and ripped out flooring. My walls were up and finished very quickly. They even put my kitchen cabinets together. They painted both rooms for me and did a great job! I am very pleased with how my remodel turned out. They were affordable and the owner and his crew was very nice and worked with my busy work schedule.

Dave and his team coated over old concrete within a significant area around my pool decking; although I had numerous questions and concerns as the project was ongoing, Dave and team were incredibly responsive and the end-product was outstanding. Dave is definitely a man of his word and when he states " that he will get it right and you will be very happy", he will stand behind those words. I would highly recommend Dave and Sims Construction!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
