Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a wedding officiant during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The safest way to conduct a consultation during COVID-19 is virtually. Ask wedding officiants near you if they can have a phone call or a virtual appointment over video chat. If they can, make sure to ask them any questions you have about upcoming work. Discuss what precautions, if any, they have in place to ensure safety. You might consider asking if they accept digital payments or if they can complete the work remotely, without any in-person contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How much does a wedding planner cost per hour?

On average, wedding planners charge $80 for their services. However, rates can range from roughly $50 per hour to $100 per hour, or even more than $300 per hour.

To find out how much it will cost to hire a wedding planner, request cost estimates from a few in your area. Also, keep in mind that some wedding planners may have flat fees instead of hourly rates.

Do wedding officiants offer remote or virtual services?

Reach out to wedding officiants in your area, and ask them if they can offer a remote or virtual ceremony. Some officiants may be willing to meet in person while maintaining 6 feet of distance, while others may prefer to conduct the entire service over the phone or a video call service such as Skype or Zoom.

Familiarize yourself with the social distancing rules in your community, city and state, and move forward only if both you and the officiant are comfortable with the arrangement.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Pastor Ron was able to honor my wishes to incorporate my Filipino wedding traditions into the American wedding traditions. By the time of our first meeting, he knew what those traditions stand for!

Arian from start to finish was easy to contact and communication of what we wanted for our wedding was made a priority. We had our event on a military base and no issues with having him part of the event on post. He was always on time for all of our meetings and was excited to for our big day. The day of the wedding he was enthusiastic and all the guest enjoyed his work and he was responsive with all the guests and photos being requested of him. I would love to have him for future events! The photos he took are amazing!

I was very excited to work with Lexi, unfortunately we never even got to the trial. She was great with my questions answered them all perfectly, I told her my wedding date and time. We first scheduled a trial date and time, but then something came up, I was understanding she gave me a great excuse. We then rescheduled for Saturday, I was a MOH at my MOH wedding in Flagstaff and didn't get great service so was unable to email exact time we could do, or when she would be available until late Friday night. I got an email back that Saturday almost noon saying since I did not respond in time she booked someone else for a trial for Saturday. I said I understand, she then said Sunday at 5pm, I said great! Sunday is here I am excited my wedding is only three weeks away, she tells me hours before my trial that she has to reschedule, again I was again understanding, telling her thank you for letting me know I appreciate that. So nice though, she offered to do it for free since she keeps rescheduling, and rescheduled for Monday (today) at 6:30. It is 4:03pm and surprise I get an email from her saying she JUST checked her schedule and has already booked a wedding for my wedding day that I already told her was my day back on June 14. Very upsetting as when I first contacted her I had four weeks until my wedding and she wasted a whole week of me counting on her and her rescheduling on me. I was very understanding every time as it is hard for me to find time to get away from my busy life and each time she rescheduled she made things extremely difficult for me. I never even got an apology from her...

Ron was absolutely AMAZING! Our wedding was very simple and casual, and he definitely turned it into a beautiful ceremony. We had compliments from all of our guests with how great he was. Pastor Mike officiated our small intimate wedding. He came prior to the date to go over details, and was professional, punctual, and detailed. He does it for the sanctity of marriage and is in my opinion worth more than what he charges. A true pastor! Not just trying to make money off newlyweds! Thank you Pastor, thank you very much!!

Last minute wedding and Charles came through immediately with return email confirming dates and sent 3 sample scripts that allowed us to create our own. He was well dressed in a suit and performed our ceremony with grace. Charles stuck around for a few minutes after signing license and for $125 represents the best value. Call him - you won't do better.
