Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

For many years my child has been struggling with math. For the same amount of years I have gone to her teachers and school asking for help. Trying to understand and. Figure where she is or where she is stuck. I had no luck. We tried tutoring by family and friends and that was help but not really informing me of where my daughter struggles. We met with Laila and in the consultation she had with my daughter she was able to pinpoint where she struggles. For the first time in 5-6 years I know what I have been asking. She set a plan for my daughter and how to get her on track. Very excited to work with her and the money is an investment for my daughters future.

I am writing this far too late. I used Blake Tutoring Services for my Spring 2020 class (PreCal). I had spent so many years thinking less of myself and my mental competencies because math just isn’t my strong suit. Alexander was so patient and understanding. He made me feel comfortable in the vulnerable position of admitting that I didn’t understand or that I was lost (which happened more often than I wish to admit). He would check in on me throughout our lesson. He would motivate me when I, frequently, got discouraged (and not in a cheesy way... In a genuine way.) He found multiple ways to explain the same lesson until he found one that clicked for me. He let me learn how I learn best (allowing me to share my screen and work through the class/homework problems with him as commentary, switching the screen when he needed to go into detail). Not to mention, he makes booking with him so stinkin’ easy. His website interface is easy to navigate. His appointment slots are helpful and concise. After booking there’s calendar integration so your tutoring session shows up on Google (or WeekCal and Apple if synced to your Google). The event even had the zoom meeting notes that you need when the time comes with the link to easily go to your lesson. He made the subject I have the most difficulties with so easy. I’m SO grateful for you. If you need a tutor, you’re doing yourself a disservice by not working with Alexander. (Actually. On second thought. Don’t hire him. Leaving all his availability open should allow me to get my sessions in. Yes. Go somewhere else. Lmao.) Honestly, though. I can’t thank him enough. (Also, Alexander when you read this... I’m working with a counseling team that identified me as having adult ADHD. No wonder we had to go over the topics so many times. Here I thought I was just... slow or stupid when it came to school. Thanks for making me feel smart and empowered with math and learning in general.)
