Carl is an experienced tutor who provides more than just "homework help" or "test prep." He helped my son with valuable life lessons like organizing his notebook and assignments. He also instructed him to advocate for himself by encouraging him to speak to his teacher after school and to be more proactive about raising his hand in class. Carl was able to identify why my son was struggling, and it had nothing to do with actual understanding of the subject matter. Rather, it was inadequate teaching materials (handouts) and a less than optimal style of teaching. Once these problems were identified, we were able to come up with solutions that would help my son succeed in class. Most importantly, Carl is not just concerned with grades and test scores. His primary concern is that the student actually knows and understands the work. I would not hesitate to refer Carl to anyone needing a tutor for their child.

Excellent tutor! Daniel tutored my 13 year old son in Physics. My son went from being completely lost to getting an A in the class. Very professional, explains topics clearly, connects well with student. My son loved the Skype/online white board method of teaching. No need to go anywhere or sit in traffic. Daniel was flexible with setting up lessons and even made time when urgently needed, like before a test. My son had a great experience and can't wait to learn with Daniel again when he gets to HS physics.

Called Daniel to help me at the last minute get ready for a statistics test. He met me the next morning and really helped me understand some concepts I was struggling with, especially word problems and figuring out which equations should be used. He was great to work with and really knows his stuff! Highly recommend him for math tutoring!!

It was a simple job. Six grade math. Most tutors either gave us the runaround or just didn't call us back. Eric at elite made sure we were satisfied from the first free trial to the session before my daughters test. Very well done

My daughter has been working with Reza on math for over a year and he has helped her keep a steady grade. I was impressed at how punctual he is and extremely reliable. He is willing to meet my schedule demands almost all the time and can work for however long we may need him. What stood out to me is how patient he is when teaching and will explain multiple times in whatever way suits my daughter. She needs a lot of written explanations and Reza goes out of his way to make sure she understands, teaching her in a specific way unique to her. He draws graphs and gives examples that relate to her everyday life and will go over each equation until she can do it on her own. He doesn't pressure her and gives her all the times she needs. Recently he has helped her in Science as well, she was struggling a lot with her homework and tests and he helped her bring up her grade quickly. He has greatly helped my daughter improve on her math and science skills and she is doing much better and no longer struggling in either class thanks to Reza. He is an excellent person and we as a family feel very comfortable with him teaching my daughter.

Chris’s great strength as a test-prep instructor is that he understands what the College Board is looking for. He was able to convince my son he wasn’t really “selling out” by giving them what they wanted, or giving up by guessing. Refreshingly, Chris is also willing to learn from the rare occasions when he can approach the question better.

Ahmed Shalaby is an amazing tutor for Jah my 9 year old son. He has instilled confidence in him and it has shown in his most recent test scores. The different techniques he uses are great and my son picks up on the strategies. We are currently doing twice a week on Monday and Wednesday and it has been a great investment. Jah thinks Ahmed is cool and he wants to keep showing him that he is getting smarter and doesn’t want to let him down. Thanks for all you for our family Ahmed. It’s appreciated

Cindy is an absolute visionary. I am a senior in high school, and I met Cindy a few months before I began this school year. My strengths academically are mainly in reading, writing, social studies, and philosophy, but Cindy has enhanced my knowledge and appreciation for mathematics, science, and my capabilities in problem solving as a whole. When I first met Cindy, I was in desperate need of a math tutor, but what I received was more than I could have ever imagined. Aside from her outstanding mathematical capabilities, Cindy has served as my mentor, ultimate problem solver, entrepreneurial guru, and ultimate inspiration throughout my college prep and application process. As a fellow performer, and actress, Cindy also has helped me explore my passion for theatre, and expand it to become a flourishing intrigue with anthropology, psychology, and motivational speaking. She is literally the reason that I am now travelling as a motivational speaker/ Body Positive facilitator to youth, ranging from middle school to high school. In offering her invaluable time, ambitious mindset, and incredibly compassionate demeanor, she has allowed me to find my true passions, and encourage others to do the same. Furthermore, Cindy is beyond this world amazing. Whether to call her an angel, an oracle, a goddess, a reincarnated Albert Einstein, or any other form of awe, I am not worthy to concretely say. However, I can attest that Cindy has absolutely changed my vision for myself and the world around me, my societal views and aspirations, as well as having enhanced my mathematical and test taking capabilities. Truly, Cindy is the most wonderful, kind, creative, talented, and intelligent essence, one could ever hope to meet or aspire to become.

Before working with Marissa, I had worked with many tutors over the years for different subjects. I worked with Marissa for SAT prep and college apps. I can honestly say that she was so dedicated, fun, hardworking, and accessible. She answered many of my questions over phone and text whenever I needed her-even going the extra mile by working out a problem on her wipe board and texting a picture of it to me during her personal time. She genuinely cares about her students.. and it shows. Her program is rigorous but she gets results! My family has recommended her to many of our friends and we will continue to sing her praises.

I first spoke with Victor about AP biology tutoring for my son. Victor always replied quickly and gave my son a full study plan for his class and the AP test. We started with tutoring at home and also had a few online sessions using Skype and Victor's whiteboard app which really helped my son, especially when he was getting over a flu. My son said he learned more in a month with Victor than he learned in a semester in class. I also called Victor again for ACT test prep for my daughter. He connected me with one of his great tutors, Josh, who was also patient and professional. My daughter really increased her scores in English, Reading, and Science thanks to Josh and Victor's guidance. I'd highly recommend Victor and his team for AP and ACT test prep. Thank you both!

I have been getting tutored with Tutisto for a little over three years now! I always struggled with math and going to Pali High a school with an awful math department eager to make kids hate math. I was lost, and my hate for math only grew after my first year of math at Pali and it reflected in my grade. It wasn't that I hated math, it was more how it made me feel; stupid and dumb. Tutisto provided me with a very qualified tutor that taught me the information in a technique that was personal for me, something that public school lacks. After three plus years I can confidently say i no longer hate math and feel confident taking my college placement test! Never in a million years would I ever think that I could say something like that!  During my senior year, I struggled with processing research papers and certain books, so Tutisto provided me with another very qualified tutor that is able to help me in a very personal way perfect for my learning style! I am beyond thankful for Tutisto as they have made an everlasting impact on my life!

Hands in the air for the BEST LSAT TUTOR PERIOD. I was weary of spending more money but I heard she was especially gifted with teaching applied logic to people who "should" be scoring higher but aren't. After our 3 sessions, we changed my entire approach and I am officially +11 from last summer. I told her she should double her price, she changed the trajectory of my life --I'm going to Vandy! She can take the most complex abstract concepts and convey them in a way that suddenly *clicks* without any condescence or sublte remarks for having taken two paid-for prep classes already. She's a Polly-Anna for late-bloomers/mom's/40+ and everyone else going back to school and I highly recommend her.

      About

My specialty with the pro-literacy programs, classrooms, group dynamics as well as tutoring and preparing learners for testing has been reading, math and art. I also specialize in utilizing creative learning and test-taking anxiety techniques with individuals who learn differently. I realize and recognize the challenges and struggles often experienced during the learning process; therefore, communication is vital! We will establish goals and by-when dates during the initial meeting. Reaching goals and learning how to exercise your potential is most important. Students who are committed to their stated goals will do well but will be challenged with homework assignments. Completion of challenging but not overwhelming homework is a key component to the learning process for the learner as well as for the teacher/tutor. I pride myself in providing reasonable accommodations as needed, maintaining a flexible schedule and being prompt. My expectations include reciprocal respect, open communication and sharing real concerns. I care enough to give constructive feedback and expect the same from each individual I work with. My cancellation policy is a 24-hour notice for both of us. We can always reschedule for another time when we both are available. Three consecutive absences will cause for an assessment, reevaluation and redetermination. Your success is what really matters. I will always check in with you to see how things are going and hope that you will share any concerns as well. I believe in a quiet learning environment, such as a library, for best results. Distractions such as phone calls can disrupt progress. I'm looking forward to partnering with you as we diligently work towards your desired goals.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

        What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

        • English
        • Science understanding and reasoning
        • Math
        • Reading
        • Writing essay (optional)

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

        • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
        • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
        • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
        • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
