First Mother Nature cleaned a throw rug non-toxically for me. It came out perfect. Then they cleaned 700 sq ft of tile flooring with grout. That too, came out perfectly. I am sensitive to chemicals and I am most grateful that they use all natural products. Hooray for them (and hooray for all of us)!

RIcardo was great - super helpful, knowledgeable and efficient. He was incredibly responsive and was willing to pitch in on additional things to help make my move out as smooth as possible. For projects he helped install some flooring, paint, move some furniture and patch some holes. Would recommend him for sure.

Byron really did amazing work! He gave me the most competitive quote which was a flat rate which I really appreciate. He was willing to come in early morning and arrived on time. He went to get a new part and didn’t even ask to increase the fee. At the end of the job he tested to see whether the pipe was sealed. And he was very attentive to clean up. I will definitely use him again if I have another plumbing issue.

Hector was amazing! Not only was his tiling really well done, but everything within the process was also impressive. From our initial meeting when he came to review the scope of work, to coordinating schedules (he even tiled while I was away at the hospital having my baby!), picking up materials (I purchased tile ahead and he picked them up), cleaning up at the end of each day, to managing the expenses and then the final payment—He was trustworthy, professional, meticulous and just an all around great person with a great attitude. I already have a few more projects I want to bring him on for and would hands down recommend him to anyone.

I needed new faucets and under sink plumbing changed in my bathroom and was told about the thumbtack app. I found the app so helpful and very excited that I found such an efficient and professional handyman as Bogdan! He responded right away and we set up a time for him come and evaluate the job for an estimate. I found the estimate to be very reasonable and when the job turned out to be more involved than anticipated, he never asked or expected a price adjustment. He did a great job and I've never had a handyman clean up as well as he did. I will be using him again for future jobs and would refer him to anyone!

Regina and team were fantastic consultants on helping me figure out what I wanted/needed to do with a tile project in my bathroom. We ultimately decided to postpone the project, but their on-site consult and email communications were exceptional. I'll definitely hire them for the actual construction once we're ready.

Ignacio arrived and assessed that the cloudy areas on my marble were actually a wearing down of the material. He said that while the appearance of the stone itself would look better, the cloudy areas would not go away. He said he didn't want me to pay and then be disappointed. He drove from the So. Bay to the East Bay for our scheduled appointment, so I at least offered him some money to pay for some of his time/gas and he refused to accept it! What a great example of honesty and professionalism!

M&M remodeled my entire kitchen. It took me about 5 months of thorough research of which i shopped in home shows and showroom stores but when M&M came to my house as part of my contractor interviews, they put so much sense into it and took over the entire process which was such a relief. They helped me with my cabinet and counter top choices and went with me for all of my tile and other items purchases, and advised me on the quality and price as well as applied their contractors discount everywhere we went. the finished kitchen is Wonderfull and next year ill be remodeling my bathroom with them for sure. safe bet.

Tony, our sales rep; Enrique, the tile specialist; and Brian, the hardwood flooring specialist were all fantastic. We got exactly what we wanted, with no hard upselling, and we even asked for a few modifications once the work was complete, which they made without any problems. We could not be happier with our new tile and engineered hardwood floors. Would recommend FCI in a heartbeat!

I cannot begin to express how happy and satisfied I am with the work done by Epic Construction. Claudiu and his entire team were an absolute pleasure to work with. Always on time and always took the time to explain and explore all the option available for a cost-efficient project. The final result was above and beyond what I had envisioned, and needless to say I was extremely happy it. I, without a doubt highly recommend Epic Construction for any small or big project you are considering in the near future. - R. Mìrola

They did a great job. Very meticulous in cleaning off surfaces that we didn't even ask them to in the kitchen and on the window sills. Knew exactly what to do without much direction from us like cleaning out gunky stuff from the bathroom tile grout. Left the mirrors streak-free clean, and vacuumed up any dust that fell from cleaning other surfaces.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.
