Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Over all All Star Painting was good value and they did a decent job. They won my business because they had the lowest bid. Here are reasons they did not receive a 5 star rating - not much attention to detail. If I did not go through and check every spot and every wall/ door and mark all of the places that was not well covered by paint, they would not have painted those spots. Also, there are definitely paint drips on my floor and carpet. Not major spots, but not super clean. Last but not least, they missed the side on one of the closet doors, I missed it too since I did not open the closet door both ways so missed it. I told them afterwards (after I already paid) but have not heard back.

Antonio and his brother did a good job of painting our doors at short notice. They were pleasant and unassuming willingly working around our packing. They were also flexible when we adjusted the job to include an exterior door. I’d definitely hire this team again.

Fernando and his team did an excellent job finishing the project in a timely manner. They wore masks and kept social distance. Fernando is very quick with responses. I kept adding things to the project and his team was very good at including the additions and yet finishing on time. I would highly recommend FNA Painting!

I was not going to rate Alan, Cruz painting because there were few things which I was not quite thrilled about, but 2nd thought Alan is a nice guy and the best was he did finish the job as he promised due to the weather/rain interruption and we were on a deadline. Alan gave a quote which was pretty reasonable and he was easy to work with. We agreed on his availability schedule and he committed to the finishing time requested for the job, and he even said that he'll get it done even if he has to work through the weekend. Before we finalized the quote since the weather had been bad, and the rain in fact happened on and off, to the point that we have to push him to work through the weekend to meet our deadline. During the process, some workers had a good attitude but some were not quite good, it caused confusion and needed us to follow up with Alan before getting it right. Overall I appreciate Alan, he kept his promise to get the job done but during the process Alan had hinted to request more money by counting he had to pay 1 1/2 overtime to his workers to work through weekend but he also realized he gave his word to us in the beginning and he'll honor it; and some requests added to the job but the requests were agreed by both of us during our negotiation quote time since other companies also included it in theirs; even couple more things needed during discussion before the job started and Alan said those were ok with him and he did not quote more money, so we thought everything would be included in the quote. In fact the job took only Fri., Sat., and Mon., (3 days), and the deadline of the job needed to be done by Wed., but he said it took around 3-4 days, actually he still have Tuesday to work and could have skipped working on Sat., to save him money! At the end of the job, we spent a long time to reason with him on his proposed additional money needed and also advised him to put it upfront but not after the fact, then we could have agreed or not agreed before the job started. Overall he is still pretty responsible and have the job done on time to eliminate us from worry, and he is indeed better to work with than other quote bidding companies. The price is pretty reasonable and the job was considerably good; we'll recommend him to others or even go back to him for future jobs if needed. By knowing his style, we'll need to make sure his bottom line price before the job:-)
