Chef Mike catered our Toastmasters Club's 25th Anniversary Gala. We had 80 guest. Chef Mike was the first caterer to respond to my request for a quote and he continued to be quick to respond throughout the entire process. Chef Mike provided us with a tasting prior to the event and we were sold from the first bite. He and his crew were flexible, professional, kind and efficient. The food was marvelous. We had Tri-tip, Salmon and Chicken for our entrees. All three were superb. So were the side dishes. Chef Mike altered his ingredients to accommodate our gluten free attendees and added special entrees for our vegan enthusiasts. No matter the request, the answer was always "Yes". Chef Mike and his team were a big part of the successful outcome of our event. I highly recommend Gourmet Your Way Catering for any event, large or small! You're going to love your experience with GYWC!

Chef William was incredibly professional from the first phone call until that last hand shake good bye. He made himself available by phone, email or text at all hours of the day to facilitate the event planning at a time that was convenient for me. He was upbeat and enthusiastic about the event- open to suggestions, offering solutions, and always service oriented. He went over and beyond what I would have expected a chef to do all in an effort to make the event run smoothly and take some of the pressure off of me. That kind of blew me away. And the food was exceptional. I mean, really, really good— and that sentiment was shared among all my guests. And probably most surprising is that this first class service and exceptional food preparation came at an extremely reasonable price. I’ve hired many personal chefs for events over the years (and, in fact, used to own an event company) and I can say that Chef William is among the best. - M. Moynihan. Del Mar, CA

HI all, My wife and I hired Jessica as our wedding coordinator for our 4 day wedding in February of 2017 in the La Quinta area. We live in Los Angeles, so we were looking for a pro who know the area well, and could help us with the planning, local vendor recommendations, supplies, etc. I can tell you this much, we were lucky to have found her. She is very proactive, straightforward, quick thinking, fast acting, and is moving a mile a minute. She hooked us up with her own professional bar, wait staff and chefs she has acquired relationships with over years of working events. She gave us recommendations on who to use for flowers, ice, booze, etc. She met us a few times on and off site to game plan for our multiple days of events, and made sure things ran smoothly throughout. We had negotiated fees, wages, timeframes all in advance, and by the time the weekend was over, everything was as it should have been and checked out. No funny business or discrepancies. Overall, she is just the sweetest lady, who wants to provide a great experience, so you don't have to worry about this and that. She's on it, is one sharp person, and very resourceful. I would highly recommend you give her a call for any size event, as she can handle both intimate and large scale. Thx so much for helping our wedding weekend to be so great and memorable!

My family recently hired Jeff to caterer a BBQ for approximately 40 people in Palm Springs. From the first moment i spoke to Jeff, I had zero worries. He is extremely responsive, knowledgeable and easy to work with. I really had to only explain the type of event, the amount of people, and our style and Jeff handled everything else. For someone that was dealing with everything from NYC, Jeff took so much stress off of my hands. Then the day of the party - Jeff was kind, beyond professional and an amazing chef. My family is still raving about the food. His staff (kicking myself that i can't remember her name) was also wonderful. Without question, I would highly recommend Jeff.

Chef Julian prepared our anniversary dinner at a home we rented in Palm Springs. It was BEYOND AMAZING! He was so great in planning our special meal and easy to work with. We were able to stay by the pool and enjoy without worrying about a thing! Appetizers, salad, main course and dessert were just perfect. He was so organized, set our table, helped with wine pairing and cleaned up everything. Very professional and a great guy! Wish he lived in our state!!! We are still talking about our molten chocolate cake!!!!!

Chef Mark was absolutely amazing to work with! I wanted to do something a little different and give my husband something he has always wanted to do, learn how to properly cook ribs and chicken on the grill! I reached out to Mark and we chatted about how we could make this a fun awesome day of grilling for my husband. He suggested all of these amazing meats and sides and desserts that sounded delicious. Not only did he show him how to correctly cook meat on the grill and showed multiple styles and ways to do it, but we even learned how to make our own wet and dry rubs for the ribs! We ended up with a feast of fantastic homemade BBQ that could have fed an army but lucky us we got it all to ourselves! I definitely will be reaching back out to Chef Mark again!

There were not just wines and food but the right wines to go with the scrumptious food that was presented in unexpected and delightful ways. I can’t wait for the next soirée you guys arrange.

Chef Anthony was so easy to work with. He was very flexible and responded quickly with any questions or concerns I had. He arrived on time, served and explain every dish and left the kitchen spotless. He was delightful and a pleasure to work with. He was very knowledgeable and was very open to share recipes and tips for cooking vegan food. He was easy to talk to and was very professional. His food was excellent. I am not vegan, but arranged for a vegan chef because of my friend's dietary preference. All the non-vegan guests also enjoyed the meal. He designed menus for me to choose from Mexican, Italian and American. We chose the Mexican cuisine. I would highly recommend him. His price point for a 3 course meal serving 7 people was absolutely reasonable. The food as well as the presentation was so beautifully done. I wish him much success! Menu- Starter: Mexican corn entree: roasted cauliflower tacos Dessert: Mexican chocolate cheesecake

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
