Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 per hour, on average. Hourly rates can range anywhere from $40-$80. However, some vocal instructors may charge flat rates or offer packages. They may also offer 30-minute lessons for a lower price. Or, they might require monthly tuition for ongoing classes. It depends on the voice coach.

Contact vocal instructors near you to get a sense of how much singing lessons cost in your area.

How can I find a good voice teacher?

Use Thumbtack to find a good, top-rated voice teacher near you. With Thumbtack, you can view the teachers’ profiles, read their client testimonials and check their ratings. To ensure you hire the best instructor, ask them questions about their credentials and success with other students. You should also get cost estimates from at least three instructors before you make your decision.

What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

I'm having a great time learning from Juan. I travel about an hour and a half to him from SF as I wanted an excuse to leave the city once a week. But I'm getting a lot out of the lessons and it's worth the long BART ride and walk. Juan is very knowledgeable about music theory and I appreciate his connecting technique and musicality with something theoretical or historical. I have taken mostly piano lessons but I tried out one voice lesson, which was also great. I would like to try another soon.

Ona is a wonderful teacher, and such a kind and lovely person as well. She has a vibrant passion for teaching and music, and she makes her lessons really fun and engaging. She fully personalized each lesson to what I was interested in, and was so supportive and encouraging. I've taken voice lessons with a few different instructors, and out of everyone Ona is the teacher I'd most highly recommend.

Great conversation with Jane. She seems to have a very good understanding of what my daughter needs to get back on track with piano and loving music. She was so accommodating to make time in her schedule to meet with us before their lessons begin. Looking forward to seeing their musical relationship blossom!

I just started my piano lessons with Max! While I wasn’t sure how virtual lessons would be, Max was so great! He was able to help me figure out how to set everything up, and had me learning to read and even play a little bit of music at the end of lesson 1. For anyone new or looking to get back into learning to play an instrument, I definitely recommend Max!

Jordan is a great guitar teacher. He's been playing guitar for years, and is very knowledgeable. In the few months of lessons that I've been going to my knowledge of how music works has gotten so much better. I have a lesson every week and my playing has been getting substantially better. Would definitely recommend Jordan.

I was sold on working with Paul once I saw the video in his profile. Seamlessly playing guitar on all those music styles told me he had impressive musical skills/talents and could play a wide range - and his charisma/personality shown through - and within the first few minutes of my first lesson all this was confirmed. I'd say he is first and foremost a musician and then a guitarist. He's professional, patient, encouraging, and intuitive (picking up on how I learn/process). Within a few minutes after each lesson he sends a concise summary, worksheets from the lesson, and detailed notes for my homework/practice. Each lesson has been enjoyable, insightful, and just has a great flow. I wasn't sure what to expect from "virtual" lessons I'm impressed but it's been rather seamless and feel like I'm learning/getting just as much if I were taking in-person lessons and productive. Total value for the cost. I enthusiastically recommend working with Paul - no doubt.

I'm new to music, and fortunate to have found Dan! He knows a ton and is incredibly patient as I try to learn. He adjusts his lessons as we go to customize them to where I'm at. I highly recommend working with him!

Kelly’s approach to music theory had me playing chords and REAL SONGS (with both hands!) by the end of my very first piano lesson EVER. He’s patient and encouraging, while pushing you out of your comfort zone. Do NOT hesitate to book him!

Dan's been a fantastic guitar teacher over the last several months. I've been seeing solid improvement week over week due to his lessons. He does a great job of breaking down the complexities of music theory and keeping things light and fun.

My 10 year old daughter has taken both voice and piano lessons from multiple professionals over the last 5 years. Until Dan came along, she never uttered the words.... “I’m so excited for my lesson this week!!!” She hates it when she misses a lesson because of travel/school conflicts and is always eager for her next lesson with Dan. We use him for both voice and piano for a full hour each week and it’s the best money we have spent given how he instills enthusiasm to learn the art of music with our daughter. Without hesitation, we would recommend him to anyone, children and adults alike!

Gabe taught our 7 year old piano through weekly lessons held at our home for about a year. Our son had not had any exposure to piano and I'd say he developed a solid knowledge base through Gabe's teaching. The only reason we discontinued lessons was because Gabe was moving from San Francisco to Oakland. Gabe was always a good communicator, very punctual and very patient with our son who sometimes would have rather goofed around than practice piano. I'd definitely recommend Gabe to other families looking for music lessons.

I'm an intermediate jazz pianist in my late 20s. Busy career, but I'm trying to make time to learn. Clifford is excellent. He has me on a rigorous program of music theory, technique, classic pieces for sight reading, and applied lessons composing accompaniments and voicing jazz standards. Clifford meets his students wherever they are skill-wise, and is truly passionate about helping them improve. He introduces one or two concepts a lesson, and we're building up a solid repertoire by working them until I've achieved mastery and then slowly combining them. I'm looking forward to continuing my lessons with Clifford- I highly recommend him.

David has been super responsive and fun to work with. We're trying to get a few more lessons on the calendar for the new year, but even in a short time he helped me explore some tangible ideas for regaining some of my old confidence on the guitar and better understanding music theory foundations. Highly recommend!

I can't say enough about Jordan's teaching. He's got incredible chops and knowledge, he asks the right questions to find out right where my knowledge ends and he starts paving the road from there, and he's just a lot of fun to talk about music with. Take lessons from Jordan.

As this is my first guitar instructor, I can't really compare Lance to others. But what I can say is that even as a guitar newbie, I can feel his passion of music through the lessons and that I got a lot more out of the 45 minutes than I ever did trying to learn guitar on my own!

I've had 5 lessons with Ken now and can confidently say he's an excellent teacher. He is incredibly animated and obviously loves teaching. My first class with him consisted of a test of sorts to gauge my current music theory level as well as some basic drills. Since then he's helped me break bad playing habits and tried to steer me towards a less mechanical style of play and practice than I was learning on my own. Ken also teaches a wide variety of musical styles and works with you to figure out where you want to go musically -- he's definitely the kind of teacher who can adapt to whatever you want to accomplish. 5 stars!

We started with Dan a couple months ago, he is teaching my 8yo daughter guitar. She had no previous experience with guitar or music. It has always be so hard to have her stick to anything but this time she is always looking forward to her next lesson. If you will ask her what she thinks of Dan, she would say:"He is amazing" Dan is a professional, with a great personality and a huge amount of patience to teach my very distracted child. She is learning! Dan's lessons are structured and adapted to her. I would highly recommend Dan to anyone.

I wanted to learn how to improvise better after having played classical piano for 8 years. After a few lessons I’m getting really comfortable! Jeffrey works at my pace, and provides examples from the greats of jazz music to inform how I ought to think about scales, intervals, and improvisation. Great teacher and I can’t wait for more.

I’ve had nothing but a great experience with Dan. He does a great job of tailoring the lesson to someone like me who works full time. He incorporates theory and songs that I want to learn, making my experience something I look forward to every week. Dan also is very accommodating and has a wealth of musical knowledge. I recommend him 100%

Jeffrey is an outstanding piano teacher! I have been taking lessons with him for around a year and a half, and over that time I have grown a ton as a piano player; he has patiently taught me numerous aspects of jazz piano theory, helped me improve my piano technique tremendously, and guided me to mastery on many pieces in different musical styles (jazz, classical, jewish, and more). He is a knowledgable in many different areas of piano, and music in general, and strikes a great balance between pushing you to learn through theory + technique and having fun learning new songs + improvising.

Garrick's lessons have been very useful to me as a self taught beginner who was getting frustrated when trying to leap ahead without a good foundation in playing technique and music theory. Pulling from years of experience leading his own band and his own self taught journey, Garrick provides a learning experience with tips and guidance that is useful for beginning and experienced players alike.

Kathy is such an amazing teacher! My 6-year-old started with Kathy as a complete beginner and is now able to do short pieces on her own. Kathy is very patient with my kid. She explains the piano pieces and music theory very well and assigns homework every week. Kathy helps our daughter build a solid foundation in piano. My daughter enjoys piano lesson with Kathy a lot.

Dan is a super talented guitar player/singer but most importantly, he is a great teacher! Within 3 lesson he taught me how to play a contemporary pop song. He’s also teaching me some music theory so I can pick up playing other songs in the future. He is patient and will point out specific things you can do to improve your technique. I’m very happy with my decision to work with Dan.

Jingjing operates from the premise that the musical composition illuminates the techniques required. I practice scales and exercises for finger strength, independence, and coordination. Yet they are in service of a higher order of musical expression, and not as mechanical repetitions in a vacuum. She provides delightful pieces to deconstruct and develop musicianship and technical mastery. My practice times during the week are mindful and efficient with clear goals. I am a beginning pianist, and I am always challenged but never overwhelmed. Jingjings’s observations are honest, and what she prescribes are logical and insightful. Her style is friendly and collaborative, and she leaves enough room for me to explore my musical ideas. Her musical knowledge helps me see the compositional structure and how to unify the piece. My musicianship and technique continue to improve steadily in our weekly lessons via zoom. As a 20 year classical singer, Jingjing has what I observed in the best teachers. They have the ability to transmit their expertise and instill in their students particular qualities-musical self-awareness, imagination, and vision that is required to become a true artist. She has the tools and skills to effectively teach both inexperienced and more advanced students. I currently use a good digital piano with weighted keys and hammer action due to living in an apartment. She is familiar with the digital pianos and their differences from acoustic pianos.
