I wish I could give her a million stars. From her original quote to her sweet and thoughtful follow-up email the day after my wedding, I was never disappointed by the professionalism and service provided by Alisa and her colleague. She worked catering into our already tight budget, corresponded with me (your typical type A personality) about small details and ever changing menu ideas/headcount, and was prompt, professional, and wonderful! The food was OUTSTANDING. She created 4 different pasta dishes, two excellent salads, veggies, and wonderful garlic bread. She and her colleague rinsed off all of our rented tableware, put them back into their crates, and even cleaned up after guests long after dinner was done! I could not have been happier with the quality and quantity of the food prepared and received several wonderful comments from my guests about the choice of food and caterer. Alisa and her colleague mingled with our guests, made themselves available when needed, and were very self-sufficient, which is a great thing to have on the day of a wedding! They even prepared a small treat for breakfast the next day. All in all, I would hire them again in a heartbeat and would advise you all to do the same if her quote comes your way. "Passionate" about food and service is what Alisa stands for and I couldn't ask for better for my wedding.

Albert, from the start, was warm and professional. This man knows his way around the kitchen! He and his lovely wife, Antonia, whipped up the most amazing vegetarian dinner for a family party (12 adults, 6 kids). Even the meat-lovers were shocked to learn that vegetarian meals were delectable. :) He was on time, clean/quick, and presented some gorgeous dishes. I'm hiring him for all future parties; he left my kitchen spotless. :) He is warm, personable, and the list goes on. Thank you, Albert and Antonia, for an awesome night.

I hired Global Gourmet for the catering of our yearly Oktoberfest. We had about a 100 people visiting and Boris and his team did an outstanding job. The food they prepared was delicious, their timing and planning was perfect and my kitchen looked nice and clean when they left. A lot of our guests commented on the good food and were impressed by their friendly service. It was a pleasure to work with Boris because he knew exactly what I was looking for and I for sure will hire Global Gourmet again.

As the slogan states - Taste for all Senses provided the context for the wonderful food catered at the Bay Model venue in Sausalito served over 200+ people for a 60th Birthday Party. We had 5 main stations. 1 ) The Soma meat station was fabulous offering steak or chicken sliders. 2) A Sushi Station - Kim Pop - yum. 3) The Mission station was outstanding with Sopes, vegetarian or carnitas and delicious tamales; and let's don't forget the great Ceviche on Tostadas delight! 4) The Chinatown station provided delightful Spring Rolls with tasty sauces. 5) The North Beach station offered festive Rotini Pasta with vegetables can salad on Endives. Great culinary experience! So many positive comments from the attendees! Many of them are interested in having Arturo cater their next event! Thanks Arturo for making our night memorable!!

We hired Cowabunga BBQ for our daughter's High Graduation / 18th birthday celebration on 5/27/2017. Cowabunga BBQ was absolutely fantastic to work with. The food was beyond delicious; all of the guests were raving about how wonderful everything they prepared was. We could not decided if the potato salad, mac & cheese or the tri-tip was the favorite. Even more than that though was how incredibly wonderful and professional David and his amazing daughter Megan was. The food was delicious and top notch: the staff are friendly and so so helpful. Any event we host needing a caterer will be Cowabunga BBQ.

I not only hired Nick to do my wedding cake for my wedding that we had in September 2013 . I also hired him to do my catering and to plan my wedding. It was a wonderful thing to not have to worry about nothing .Nick and his staff did a beautiful job on transforming my wedding into my dreams. He kept me updated every step of the way on flavors of my cake and styles of my cake. He also provided me with wonderful tastings of my catered food that was to be done on my wedding day. I never knew of any problems on the day of the wedding Nick took care of everything. I believe famous creations went above and beyond what I expected them to do and I would definitely recommend them and hire them for any other events that I do. A+ service .

Fantastic!! This is your next caterer!! Fabulous food at a price that is unbeatable. I really wanted a wedding with great and, for me, memorable food. But where could I get someone to handle my special food needs; vegan and gluten free?! Yikes. Nancy not only came through with a great menu but all the food was delicious, varied and creative. My very persnickety (food wise) vegan best friend turned to me during the reception and said, "This is the best vegan food I've ever had." And it was. Nancy had to go way our of her way to order gluten free bread for the bruschettas and no one could tell the difference from sourdough baguette. Neither could I! So, you're not a vegan? Then order the grilled peaches - mine came with a vegan cream but yours could be the real deal. Everyone loved it. And a fantastic side or main dish: Grilled Eggplant dipped in Chile Oil with Kabocha Squash and Scarlet Runner Beans tossed in Black Bean Sauce. Nancy's so good that the same aforementioned friend just hired her for her wedding.

Polkadot Dinners is our favorite caterer. Rachel is one of the most professional caterers I know in the area. Her food is absolutely amazing and her presentation of her display of food just ties in with the theme of her menu which is a added plus. Definitely within anyone budget she can make it happen. Highly recommended.

It is my pleasure to offer a review of Sylvia's catering, culinary expertise and work ethic. I have enjoyed years of her cooking as she and I were coworkers. In addtion she has catered a couple parties for our family. Sylvia is classically trained so she may provide any food item or method requested. She is also of course very proficient in kitchen safety, equipment, hygiene, prep, timing and temperature requirements. Now for food! Sylvia has a special sense for pairing and encorporating big flavors and complimentary textures. Whether is is fried chicken and mashed potatoes you are after or exotic flavors of the Far East and Carribean Islands, she can provide. Personally I prefer the latter and the spices and flavors Sylvia creates are completely delicious. Some examples include her Chana Alu (curry chick pea and potato), chilie spiced salsas and chutneys, and tangy tomato marinaras. Our family perferes the Caribbean flavors and a recent menu included jerk spiced chicken (and tofu), coconut prawn, chana alu, spicy mango chutney, yougart/ dill chutney, green salad and cilantro/ lime rice. Sylvia graces any atmoshere with exuberance, style, positivity and professionalism. Highly recommened!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
