Carl is an experienced tutor who provides more than just "homework help" or "test prep." He helped my son with valuable life lessons like organizing his notebook and assignments. He also instructed him to advocate for himself by encouraging him to speak to his teacher after school and to be more proactive about raising his hand in class. Carl was able to identify why my son was struggling, and it had nothing to do with actual understanding of the subject matter. Rather, it was inadequate teaching materials (handouts) and a less than optimal style of teaching. Once these problems were identified, we were able to come up with solutions that would help my son succeed in class. Most importantly, Carl is not just concerned with grades and test scores. His primary concern is that the student actually knows and understands the work. I would not hesitate to refer Carl to anyone needing a tutor for their child.

Mike made all the difference in the world in my statistics and pre-calculus classes at UC Irvine. I went from barely passing to getting a B+ in both courses with his help. I highly recommend him and only wish I hired him sooner.

I am a professor of mathematics and the supervisor of the Math Tutoring Lab at Los Angeles Valley College. Reza is one of the best tutors I have met on any campus I have taught at including University of Utah, Cal State Los Angeles, and numerous community colleges. Reza has tutored at LA Valley College for the past 9 years. Overall he has tutored for 18 years. He is commonly the tutor I hear praised most often by my students. They tell me that not only is his mathematics excellent but he is very clear in his explanation and very supportive with his attitude. He makes my students want to do more math because he makes it very comprehensible for them. Reza tutors Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus and Statistics. He is the standard I hold up my other tutors to. He shows up on time, teaches very intuitively and my students walk away from each session with him feeling better about themselves. As a person, I find Reza to be a wonderful role model who volunteers many hours each week at the tutoring lab, teaching math to many students on campus.

I knew Chris a little when he was at Garfield, as a community organizer, and hired him for my daughter — he’s taken the lessons of Garfield to heart, and good at communicating with a diverse array of students. Now my daughter has started at Garfield, and she’s writing with great confidence — a privilege.

Rachel is a fantastic and brilliant math tutor. I hadn't taken a math class in about 23 years and wanted to pass my placement exam out of intermediate algebra to go directly into statistics. I knew I could recall a lot of the concepts if I had a good guide to help me quickly get an understanding. We met at various libraries for our sessions depending on where I was working on those days and times. She was patient, quickly understood without completely disregarding my seemingly far fetched goals, and helped me get through any challenging areas in a way that made it very clear. She has a way of making math "fun and sweet" like I had never previously realized it could be/is. I had 3 sessions with her (2 hrs, 3 hrs, 2 hrs) over the course of one week and passed my test by that Friday. When I started in my statistics class, I recommended her to anyone that was anticipating having any trouble with the class. If I have any trouble with math classes in the future, I know exactly who to call; she is the best! I'm so grateful to Rachel for her support and encouragement.

My daughter had a “D” in AP Calculus when she started to work with Ahmed. He had to reteach foundational concepts and within 2 1/2 months she has a chance to earn an “A” for the semester. Ahmed is a patient, highly knowledgeable, effective teacher. I would wholeheartedly recommend him as a tutor. We were so impressed with his results, we have him tutoring my younger daughter as well!

My 10th grade daughter had a wonderful Tutisto tutor, Paulina, for Math Analysis (pre-calculus). My daughter attends a highly-rated charter high school but we opted for her to take online Math Analysis via Laurel Springs under Paulina’s guidance. My daughter looked forward to her weekly 1.5 hour sessions with Paulina. If she had questions during the week, my daughter would text Paulina who responded immediately. Paulina kept me informed of my daughter’s progress throughout the year. Paulina is exceptionally organized, responsive, smart, patient and communicative. We are very grateful to have found her through a friend and will continue to have her tutor Calculus next year to augment the high school teacher’s lessons. My only regret is that we didn’t find Paulina earlier, as we would have hired her to help my daughter learn geometry in 8th grade!

After a couple less-than-stellar tutoring experiences via Thumbtack, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found Sol. My tutoring needs were somewhat unusual: after a 10-year hiatus, I needed to reacquaint myself with high school math in order to pass a placement test into a college-level calculus I course. Far easier said than done. Sol was up for the challenge, and knew just how to tackle it. After I had diligently dug out of my old textbooks from my parents' garage, Sol offered an anecdote about his dear friend and and former Cal-Tech college roommate when he was confronted with modern-day high school math. (Sol, you see, is not only an incredibly savvy tutoring professional, but also a retired JPL scientist--and a thoroughly interesting, thoughtful and personable man to boot.) As Sol's anecdote helped to illustrate, the scope of high school math has evolved in recent years, in ways even the former president of Hughes Aerospace, in a moment of complacency, would fail to appreciate. Pre-Calculus theses days focuses much more on the interpretation of graphs, and introduces concepts such as solving and plotting the inverse of linear and fractional equations, which wasn't even taught when I took the course circa 2000. At Sol's request, we set aside my old textbooks in favor of modern coursework that he provided. It was a few months later, at our last lesson, that I was able to truly appreciate how much Sol cares about his students. In his office, I happened to glance at a computer window where Sol had a folder with my name and files charting 'Goals', 'Progress' and 'Notes'. Sol's hard work and investment in my success paid off: on my placement test I scored a 98%--surpassing the score I had needed for calculus I and placing me into calculus II! As Sol predicted, the test had focused quite extensively on those more modern facets of pre-calculus that he had taught me. Now in calculus II, I feel utterly prepared, and only have Sol to thank. *Highly* recommended.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
      • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
