Sergio (owner of Kecko Plumbing), came out to our residence in a timely manner and provided exceptional services. His estimate was spot on from when he walked in the door and provided the services that he stated he was going to provide. The estimate was free of charge and he did the work in a timely manner. He is an excellent plumber and I highly recommend him as opposed to the larger, over-rated, and expensive plumbers that are out there. Thank you very much Sergio for the wonderful service.

My experience with Esteban Velez of Diamond Plumbing was pleasant and successful. His initial contacting me was quick and he was able to come right out. He showed up when he said he would and he diagnosed and fixed my problem. He was professional and courteous and seems to have done a thorough job. He was friendly and patient, especially in answering several questions I had and allowing me to watch him work. I will definitely use him again in the future for any plumbing needs I have.

When we called Jim to repair our rusting and leaking water heater he came over in the afternoon, after completing work for another customer. He explained what was needed and why, and went to the store to get what we needed that afternoon so he could start first thing the next morning. The next morning he arrived when expected and we had a new water heater quickly. We live in a Mobil home and he made the necessary adjustments for us. Throughout the removal and replacement of our water heater he explained everything and answered all of our questions. Jim was very polite and enjoyable to learn from. He lives nearby and can respond quickly. I will definitely recommend him for plumming needs. He helped with another plumbing problem also, that I almost forgot about, with no extra charge. He also cost less than all other professionals. I have great trust in him and will definitely call him for other plumbing needs that we may have in the future. Thank you very much Jim.

Luis was professional, courteous, friendly, and best of all, a great teacher. He came out to our condo at midnight and finished fixing our leaky sink fast! He was prompt with his responses via text, quick at diagnosing our problem, and swift getting to our place. As first-time renters, he informed us of the hardness of our water eating away at the plumbing, he showed us what to look for when fixing issues ourselves (I'm trying to be handy), and he had a great sense of humor; thus, demonstrating expertise in his craft and fantastic customer service. I highly recommend him! Thanks, Luis!

Tim was very professional and I appreciated that he also took the time to answer all my curious questions. I needed a new gas cooktop installed and he arrived right on time and had the job done in a very short time. He even brought along an assistant which made the process even smoother. I love my new cooktop, and I wouldn't hesitate to hire him again anytime I have plumbing work to do.

Jay responded promptly to my request. Our water heater stopped working. Jay was very professional in his communication and gave me a rough estimate of how much the charges might be depending on what's wrong with the water heater. What I liked is that They don't charge to come out and diagnose. Once they diagnose the problem, if we decide to have them do the work, they will perform the service and then we pay them for services done. We set an appointment for 2pm the following day. 1:55pm, Keoni (Jay's team member) knocks on our door! They were not only on time... they were early! That alone was amazing, i was already super pleased by their punctuality! They diagnosed the problem and walked us through it. Keoni was very professional and knowlegeable! The best part is... their pricing is reasonable! It was actually the best pricing I've heard from the many places I have called the past few days.. .and the most professional from the moment of communication until the end! I checked out their website also and yelp. There are no negative reviews and I understand why! Swift Water Heater and Plumbing, thank you so much for the amazing customer service and the fair pricing. I appreciate honest and good businesses like you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
