Your burning questions: answered

Who cleans area rugs?

Like your carpets, area rugs should ideally be cleaned at least once a year to remove dust and dirt and help them last longer. In general, carpet cleaning professionals also clean area rugs. Some rug cleaners bring their cleaning equipment to your home, while others remove your area rugs and clean them at their facilities. Either way, the rug should be cleaned with the solution most appropriate to its specific fabric and construction. It should also be completely dry before you return it to the floor.

Is it worth getting rugs professionally cleaned?

It is worth the money to get rugs professionally cleaned if they’re fragile, have tough-to-remove stains or you don’t know how to clean them. When in doubt, contact a pro to clean your rugs.

How often should you clean your rugs?

This depends on your rug’s condition — and the conditions in your home. If your rug is located in a high-traffic area like a mudroom, entryway or hallway, you may need to clean it more often. Families with small children or pets should clean their rugs more often as well. Those with allergies should also clean their rugs more often, as should those who wear their shoes inside.

What is the best way to clean a Persian rug?

Cleaning a Persian rug often requires utilizing a vacuum, rug shampoo, water, a brush or sponge and bucket. However, be careful of these common DIY mishaps:

  • Using the wrong shampoo or cleaning solution
  • Not using enough water (or using too much)
  • Cleaning your rug too often

To ensure you don’t accidentally ruin your rug, you might want to consider hiring a professional cleaner with plenty of experience and expertise.

How much does it cost to clean a rug?

Area rugs are typically found in high-traffic areas of the home, like hallways and entryways, so they collect more dirt and stains than simple vacuuming can handle. Similar to carpet cleaning, professionals can come to your home to deep-clean your area rugs. The national average cost for rug cleaning ranges from $80 to $120, but may be higher or lower depending on the rug’s size and fiber type. Rug cleaners generally charge by the square foot; for example, a standard 8-foot by 10-foot rug costs an average of $100 to clean. Natural fiber rugs, such as wool or silk, are usually more expensive to have cleaned than synthetic rugs. A carpeting cleaning company may charge on average $1.50 per square foot to clean a synthetic rug, $2 per square foot for a wool rug, and $3 per square foot for a silk rug. Some delicate rugs need to be washed by hand, which increases the price. Carpet cleaning companies often offer additional services, such as removing odors or applying moth deterrent, which can add 20 cents to 25 cents per square foot.

How much does it cost to clean an area rug?

Whether your pet had an accident, the party got too wild, or your kids can’t control their juice boxes — we all need rug cleaning from time to time. In fact, even if you don’t have a spill or spot, it’s wise to have your area rug cleaned approximately once a year to keep the rug fibers in good health. In general, rug cleaning prices depend on the square footage of the rug, what the rug is made of, whether any repairs are needed, and whether you require the pro to travel to your location or provide pickup and drop-off services. Nationally, average area rug cleaning prices range from $80 to $120.

Wool and silk area rugs typically cost more to clean than rugs made from synthetic fibers because the more delicate materials take more care and may require specialized cleaning fluids. For example, a synthetic rug may cost $1.50 per square foot to clean; a wool, cotton, or chiffon rug could be $2 per square foot; and a silk or Navajo wool rug could cost $3 per square foot. The two most common rug cleaning methods are steam and chemical cleaning. The costs for the two methods are often the same, although a steam-cleaned rug will take longer to dry due to the moisture. If your area rug needs odor removal, moth deterrent, or hand washing, there will be additional charges.

Friendly and professional and the rug is so clean we actually forgot the true color of it! It’s much lighter and fluffier than we remember :-) we’ll be having him back to do our windows next week.

They were very communicative and helpful. They worked with me to get my rug cleaned and delivered as quickly as possible. My apartment building flooded and the bottom of my wool shag rug got wet and was starting to smell -- it wasn't visibly damaged at all, I just needed the smell gone. When I got the rug back, the smell was 90% gone. I could only smell it if I literally put my nose up against the fabric. I'm writing this review 30 days later and the rug still looks and smells good. They did a good job.

I am usually very skeptical with the company I choose to clean my very valuable Persian rugs. I have 2 8x10 wool rugs that are old and needed some cleaning and repairs. When I contacted eco dry, Aaron came by to thoroughly inspect my rugs and offered to take them off site to perform a detailed cleaning at a great price. He had them back looking new and smelling great. All the stains came out and the torn areas look like they never happened. I’m am beyond grateful that there are still companies like this out there that are trustworthy with no surprised. I’m very happy and I definitely recommend this company

Fantastic! My rug is good as new. Quick and as tidy as can be. Make sure to move any electronics out of the before hand so the liquid from the cleaner doesn't damage your appliances.

Carpet wasn’t cleaned to expectation. Company representatives were kind and made process easy. And while the price is cheaper than others, you get what you pay for. I would say my rug is about 60% cleaner than before.

Blue Rooster did an excellent job cleaning our shag rug! He was on time, very professional, and reasonable. We had him come on our moving day so things were a bit hectic but he was very flexible given the limited space. I would happily recommend them.

Two words to describe Garry's overall service, pricing and communication would be: TOP NOTCH! Garry was able to help clean our 9x11 jute/chenille rug in a timely manner, was effectively informative about what he was doing and and how his materials would help us in the long run. My fiancee and I are extremely satisfied with our experience and loved Garry's professionalism!
