Bruce was on time and did excellent work. He installed two new toilets and a new valve. Bruce told me about a sale at Home Depot and I was able to save money from that advice. He cleaned up the work area before leaving. He was also very nice and I enjoyed talking with him. I highly recommend Bruce for your plumbing needs.

Manny from DaVila Plumbing exceeded all expectations! He made a special exception and came at night to me even though he was only available the next day. He said he would be here between 8:00 and 8:30pm and he was punctual at 8:00pm. He did a quick fix on our drain and I am glad to have met him. I will now use him for all my plumbing needs! I would recommend using him!

I would hire Juan in the future, as I was very pleased with the work he did for a very challenging plumbing issue. His communication is excellent, which was helpful when explaining my issue. He also knows what he's doing as he was able to explain what was going on, and he came up with the right fix that was needed, which was redoing the silicone sealing on my sewage basin. He is very detail oriented and cares about doing excellent work, as he spent a few hours making sure every possible gap would be sealed. He also made a recommendation for adding venting around the basin in the basement to help with airflow, something no other past plumber had ever thought of. Juan is friendly, professional, and takes pride in his work, and for that value I'm willing to hire him again in the future.

We had a much better than expected experience with Alan Ramirez' Plumbing. Mr. Ramirez made himself available and arrived sooner than expected on a Sunday of a long weekend. Accompanied by a helper, he had all the tools and seamlessly completed repairs, which included unclogging the kitchen drain. He then asked to be walked through the house, to check showers and discovered another water stoppage. This one proved to take longer and yet he stuck to his quote and only charged for one visit. His price was so much less than what was quoted by other services that it only seemed fair to pay him double of what he quoted. Integrity and professionalism do pay off and we can only regret that we had not used Mr. Ramirez before. Now, how do you spell 'relief'?

Mr. Yekta was a very skilled Workman. He fixed the drywall of my ceiling. The plumber left a large hole as a result of fixing a leaking pipe. The repair looks good. He also did a good job cleaning up I plan to use him again.

Originally hired Shiner plumbing. They cancelled the last minute, just like other reviews had posted. So I called Elite plumbing and they were able to send someone else the same day. Will definitely recommend this company. And stay away from Shiner plumbing.

Everyone on the team was the epitome of professionalism. They explained the process..had me view the damage via camera before starting any work. Due to the inconvenience of not having a working toilet..they expedited the repair..completing a major repair (where I had been given a 3 day timeline by other companies) to 12 hours! All this was done at a very competitive price. I will NEVER use another plumbing company..

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
