Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an exterminator during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask exterminators in your area if they would be willing to offer a consultation over a phone call or video chat. You can then ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. Make sure to ask what precautions they are taking to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether they are observing social distancing guidelines. You may ask them if it's possible to conduct the appointment virtually or without person-to-person contact.

How can I find out if an exterminator is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Essential service providers during the COVID-19 crisis are defined by individual states, cities and localities. For the most accurate information, visit your official state or city government website to see what is considered an essential service.

CISA is the government agency that defines critical workers on a national level, so you can check its website for more information. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for pest control services?

You may be able to use digital payments such as Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash or Zelle to pay for extermination services. Many businesses accept methods of payment besides cash and credit cards. Check with pest control services in your area to see if they have changed their payment methods as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an exterminator when social distancing?

If you need pest extermination services inside your home, talk to the exterminator first to be sure that you both feel comfortable completing the project. Also, follow the CDC’s guidelines on social distancing. You can also arrange with the exterminator to take extra steps to stay safe, such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying at least 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing any common spaces before and after the project is complete.

Do exterminators offer remote or virtual services?

Typically, extermination takes place at your home or place of business, but you can ask if the business is offering special accommodations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across a profile that states the exterminator is offering remote services, ask what those services include. But if the job has to be done in person, be sure to follow the CDC’s guidelines on social distancing or see if you can postpone your appointment.

Does an exterminator need to enter my home?

If you have an outdoor pest infestation, it’s unlikely an exterminator will need to enter your home. But if your pest infestation is inside your home, the exterminator will likely need to enter your home. Check with the exterminator beforehand to explain the extent of the problem, the layout of your house and see if they can complete the job outdoors. You can also ask the exterminator to video chat or set up a phone call to exchange as much information as possible before you begin the project.

Do I need to leave the house for pest control?

It depends on the type of pest control service you require. Your exterminator can often tell you beforehand which products they’ll be using and where they’ll be applying it.

If the pest control company will be applying toxic chemicals, limit your exposure, according to the National Pesticide Information Center. For example, consider leaving your house during application and ventilate your home thoroughly when you return. And always keep your pets and their supplies away from the applied pesticides.

How do you get rid of ants?

The best way to get rid of ants is to hire an ant exterminator near you. The exterminator can also help you find the source of the problem that’s drawing ants into your home.

After they’re done treating your home, you can invest in ant baits to keep infestations at bay. It’s also important to take preventative steps to avoid ants.

For example, always clean up crumbs and wipe down surfaces to eliminate potential food sources. Regularly take out the trash, fix leaky pipes, store your food in sealed containers and seal cracks near your kitchen cabinets.

Here are more tips on how to get rid of ants (for good).

Is monthly pest control necessary?

Monthly pest control service is only necessary for certain situations. For example, severe ant or cockroach infestations may require monthly pest control in order to destroy the infestations at the source.

Talk to the best exterminators near you to get an idea of what type of service you need — and how many times you’ll need follow-up treatments.

How much does it cost to kill bed bugs?

The cost of bed bug extermination depends primarily on how widespread the pest infestation is and how many rooms need to be treated. Other factors that can affect bed bug extermination costs are the amount of clutter in the location, additional furniture that needs to be treated, and construction of the home. Pest management professionals often have rates for room treatments, which can vary based on these factors. As an example, a pest management company treating a 10-by-15-foot room with light infestation might charge clients about $250, while the same size room with a heavy infestation and large amounts of clutter might cost the clients $300-$400. Clutter and heavier bed bug populations mean more product and longer labor time for the workers. Rates will vary from company to company, and from region to region, but the national average bed bug extermination cost is $320-$400. Bed bug heat treatments are an alternative way to exterminate these pests. Heat treatments are typically charged per square foot and tend to cost more than chemical or non-chemical spray solutions. Although effective, they are not usually recommended for occupied spaces, as the extreme temperatures can damage televisions, window dressings and other home furnishings.

I hired Cruz because he was professional on the phone and his reviews gave me the confidence. I was convinced he would be trustworthy, knowledgeable and complete the project in a timely fashion. As expected, when he came to my home for an inspection, all of the above was true. My husband and I are extremely pleased with his work and knowledge of rodent pest control. Having used another exterminator in the past, Cruz was far and away more professional, cost efficient and he completed the first phase of our project in less time than expected. In addition, his follow up was exceptional. Within a few days, he came back to check traps and offered to be available on call if need be. We will continue to work with Cruz for extermination, as well as, handyman related projects. He is terrific!

Still have MANY ants. Charged $150 and although gentleman was nice, he said to leave for an hour only. We left for almost 3 hours (we have 2 dogs, 6 years old healthy and 17 years old). Our 6 year old dog has been sick since the exterminator came from pest control and he never went near any of the areas that were sprayed + we left the house. So paid $150, still have ants and now have a sick dog and a large vet bill. Thanks.

It is rare these days to find good people. Cruz is a good guy and a gem. Take note that I am not one who gives compliments lightly. My elderly mother's home became riddled with mice and on top of that a couple of raccoons decided to reside and reek havoc under the crawl space. It was a mess. I called 11 exterminators and found Cruz through Thumbtack. Cruz certainly came to the rescue. Over the course of a week, he managed to get rid of our raccoon problem, thoroughly inspected and sealed the house, cleaned up the droppings and has returned a few times to make sure the rodents were gone. He did what he said he was going to do. I found him to be professional, always on time, and most importantly honest. I would not hesitate to recommend his services. He performs his work and from my standpoint has gone above and beyond. - From a Relieved and Happy SF Resident.

Cruz is a lifesaver!!! I have an extremely irrational fear of mice, so when I saw a tiny mouse scurrying in my room at 5am-- I PANICKED AND RAN OUT OF MY HOUSE. I went to a coffee shop to look for exterminators to get that mouse out but none were available on a Sunday-- except Cruz who called me back and reassured me that he could come out that same day and take care of my problem. He arrived on time and did a very thorough inspection to make sure it was only one mouse and not an infestation of any sort. He was even kind enough to help me clean up around my room and calm me down (I was still freaking out and panicking at this point). He set traps around my room and promised to be back in a couple days to ensure enough time for that pesky mouse to get into one of the traps. Overall, Cruz was amazing because he was available same day, great at communication, thorough, and gave me PEACE of mind about this whole situation. I would definitely recommend him!!!!
