Chef Pete Coleman offered us a competitive rate to cater our wedding reception for 145 people. Without hesitation, he provided an in-home tasting with our parents. He personalized the menu according to our tastes. Pete and his team catered the wedding, cleared tables, and served a signature cocktail, beer, and wine. Our wedding guests loved the food and friendly service. I would highly recommend Chef Pete!

Stephanie did an absolutely incredible job with the brunch we held the morning after our wedding. The food was absolutely delicious and she even provided all the ketchup and hot sauce a girl can ask for her with her eggs and hasbrowns. THE EGGS were cooked to perfection! That's so hard to do, and they were fluffy and delicious. We also had coffee and OJ. It was the perfect meal after a long night before. Everyone commented on the quality and we we're very happy with the event. I will most definitely be using Stephanie for future events.

Paul and Nitro BBQ was the first major decision we made for our hilltop wedding. He was readily available to discuss our menu choices and easily made suggestions to the sides based on our preferences. As the rest of our planning got underway, we lapsed on the regular back and forth. When we picked up communications with just a month to go until our wedding, Paul was right on top of things. We scheduled the most delicious tasting with his signature pig and roasted seasonal veggies. We also finessed the rest of our menu with him that afternoon. The day of our wedding, Paul and his assistants were there and put on a great culinary show. He also gets bonus points for sneaking the bride (me) a bit of tri-tip before dinner and setting aside some pig cheek for me later on. The salad he created far surpassed our expectations (we're not salad people but it was delicious) and the mac and cheese was popular with both adults and kids. I wish I could have spent more time pigging out at my wedding to eat everything - but that's never how weddings go for the bride and groom. Paul also deserves major bonus points for working with local farmers and pig people to source his tasty tasty ingredients. Thanks for feeding us and providing such an amazing wedding catering experience!

Deborah catered the Sunday Brunch at our Wedding back in October. She served both the Bacon and Vegetable quiches as well as made some amazing caramel apple bread pudding. She finished it off with yogurt parfaits and roasted veggies. It was truly a spectacular feast and everyone was impressed!! The timing was perfect and the experience was great! Thanks Quiche and Carry -Teresa and Amanda

I have been to several catering events that Chet Chase has orchestrated, from a small private luncheon to a large holiday party. The raves from guests were numerous and the "ooohhss" and "aaahhhaas" were heard about the appetizers, drinks and entrees. He is so creative and can work within any budget. The plus side too, he is a "dream" to work with and his team is so professional. I would hire him in a heartbeat!

My husband and I planned our wedding in 3 weeks and chose Chef Gray to cook dinner for our 22 guests. She provided a proposal immediately and create a personalized menu for us with all of our favorite foods. She was very easy to work with throughout the whole process and she even accommodated the 5 children under 6 six years old. Because it rained on the day of our wedding, we had to change our plans and Chef Gray and her staff made the necessary changes seamlessly. Everyone at our wedding dinner enjoyed the 5 course tasting menu she created and the cannolis she handmade for dessert. Her staff was very professional and made the experience even more enjoyable. She also brought a bartender with her that was very knowledgeable and made specialty cocktails before dinner and poured wine with each course. Overall it was a great experience!

I've known Grace for many years. I have been over to her house for home cooked meals that were truly gourmet, and delicious. She also prepared some food and sold it from her home. On the level of catering for large parties, I went to our friend Dave's party last month were Grace did the catering. The food was flawless, delicious, with great presentation, and great variety. I strongly recommend Grace for catering your events.

Matt and his wife Nina did a wonderful job catering my small backyard wedding for 20 people. Their food was absolutely delicious and everyone loved it! Very professional with day of services and were both very kind and welcoming people. Generally pretty responsive with emails/messages. Very receptive to everything that I wanted for the event and delivered on all my requests. We rented dinnerware and glassware from them and it made everything a breeze! Such a pleasure to work with. Overall was a good experience. I would love to eat their food again!!

Michelle catered a dinner celebrating my wife's birthday, and it was an amazing experience. Her food was delicious, and she used really great ingredients too. I also like that she brought beautiful flowers and candles to improve the warmth of the space. She even printed menus to distribute. A lot of nice touches. Very responsive and friendly!

Angela catered my wedding of about 80 people. Her food was amazing. We got the portobello wellington, malfati, and roasted vegetables. The wellington was wonderful, the malfati good, and the vegetables were okay. The garden salad was amazing, and the best part of the meal. Unfortunately, there were issues with the kitchen and her staff was unable to provide food timely. Three tables waited approximately and hour and fifteen after everyone else had received their food. I was disappointed that I hired 4 servers and they had to pull my bartender to serve food. Which left our event in a situation where the event manager had to oversee the bar. Overall the food is really wonderful, but there were some structural issues.

Liberation Foods BBQ was the highlight of our wedding reception! From the start of our wedding planning, Liberation Foods responded promptly to all of our questions and was flexible with our menu and budget. We were immediately impressed by the quality of the food and booked instantly for our backyard summer wedding of 150 people. Liberation Foods checked in with us frequently before our event which helped put us at ease during the planning process. On the day of our wedding, Liberation Foods was prompt and efficient with their set up. They were kind to us and our guests, adding to the overall atmosphere. Their food was a big hit and our friends are still talking about it months after! Without hesitation, I’d recommend Liberation Foods to friends and family for weddings/special events.

Wanting to learn to cook lower calorie food that still had great flavor, I hired Zac to come to my home and teach in our kitchen. My husband is our (excellent) cook, I am not a cook (at fifty-something years old), presenting a bit of a challenge. Rising to the occasion, Zac planned a meal that read like the menu at French Laundry! Panic! There was no way I could prepare this meal. Zac said...Way! He met me at Sonoma Market to introduce me to fresh everything, not packaged anything! Back at our kitchen, the magic began and WOW! Probably one of the most delicious dinners I've ever had at home, and certainly rivaling 5 star restaurants. Our cooking and dining experience was nothing short of superb and better yet, not a dollop of butter or a drop of cream was used to create the fantastic soup, salad, and complex main course. Through Zac's exceptional knowledge of herbs and spices, he taught me to create extraordinary flavors to enhance the food, and not over power it. It was a brilliant evening of cooking! Zac is easy going, yet very assured, and his ability to communicate is second to none. Remarkable job by a talented young man who will be continuing to educate us in the kitchen and most assuredly catering events for us. Bravo, Zac...Bravo!

Olive Cater team catered my birthday party in February and it was absolutely delicious. The buffet looked beautiful and had a wide variety of dishes with many vegetarian options. The shawarma was out of this world! Even though we eat a lot, we had leftover for the next day. It was fun to see the team cook and prepare the food at my house and they left the kitchen cleaner than it was before. I highly recommend Arkadi and Elinor service.

My experience with Alice's Wonders was not just amazing, it was magical. The power of great food in brining people together is magical and it heals the soul. I had the great pleasure to have this amazing team working on my wedding day about a month ago (April 7, 2017). About seven month ago my fiancée and I decided that we wanted a wedding party and that we wanted authentic Brazilian Food. The first person I reached out to was Alice, the founder of Alice's Wonders Catering. As Alice is Brazilian herself and happens to be a great friend for over a decade, she was indeed my very first option. I knew she was an amazing cook, but now she had her business and could cater anywhere at anytime!!! My biggest concern though was that even though I wanted authentic Brazilian Food, I also had to take in consideration the fact that half of my guests were not Brazilians. So in my first meeting with Alice's Wonders came the biggest surprise. I discovered that Alice’s Wonders Catering is above all customizable and eclectic when it comes to food. She took some Brazilian typical dishes that I really wanted and made a very personalized menu to my guests' different tastes and needs. For instance, I had vegetarians and pork restrictions. They worked with us to help brainstorm and elaborate best options. They spent time in our meetings helping us to put together what we wanted and what would make my wedding dinner the biggest success of the night, after my amazing dress of course :). I opted to have buffet style. The set up was beautiful and the food beautifully presented. Food was plenty; some of my guests came back for seconds and some even third serves. The brainstorming in our meetings was filled with respectful feedback & considerate explanations. They were very responsive to all my needs and requests. When the big day came, I only heard how amazing the food was- it brought my guests together over delicious food. They were happy and content and I was feeling that the day was extra magical with all the comments I heard during and after about the food. I was proud of myself to have chosen Alice's Wonders to be caterer my wedding. I was happy to have picked an extremely professional team with magical cooking hands and services to make my day a wonderland :). THANK YOU!!!

Sarah is simply an amazing chef. Her food is always delicious and made in a timely manner. I have eaten her food for many years (luckily), and she also catered my wedding (of about 200 ppl) without hardly any help. She always keeps her cool and accommodates whatever her client needs. You must try her food!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
