Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Chat with the best tile specialists to find out how long it will take to install a backsplash in your home.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

We asked Custom Dream Tiles to install subway tiles in our bathroom walls and large rectangle tiles on the bathroom floor. Right from the first visit, it was clear that Junio is an expert on tiling and a true professional. This is a pretty difficult job: the subway tile design is such that it's really easy to see uneven tiles, even worse, our house has settled so the room is tilted. Despite these challenges, Junio and his crew worked meticulously and never compromised on quality. The tiles were installed flawlessly to our amazement. Every morning, Junio would come and tell with us about his plan for the rest of the today, confirm with us on the design decisions and offer his recommendations. They were a pleasure to work with and we wouldn't hesitate to hire them again!

I highly recommend Soloman for your tile work. His craftsmanship is superb. He is extremely efficient, communicative, skilled, and a problem solver. He tiled an entire kitchen wall space in two days with high end tiles. He brought in all necessary materials and equipment, prepped the area, cut the tiles precisely and handled them with care. His work is precise and outstanding. I give him the highest rating. Exceeded all expectations.

Carlos and his team were great! I was in a bind timing wise and he was flexible working with my ever changing scheduling due to other subs, delayed tile delivery due to LA fires. He even fixed furring issues with the walls that the tile was going onto with large 2x4' tile for a walk in shower. I'll be using him on all my client projects! Professional, friendly, knowledgeable, flexible/accommodating, willing to help get my project over the finish line!

Juan worked quickly and also took extra measures where needed to make sure our bathroom walls were properly waterproofed and that the tiles were plum to the wall. He installed very straight tiles and edging. He is a kind and trustworthy professional - I highly recommend hiring him!

We are so impressed with Anibal. We hired him to replace the floor and shower tile in a small bathroom in our home. He was very responsive during booking, had reasonable pricing and did a great job on the tile work. We already have plans to hire him again for more work in our home. Highly recommend.

Hector was amazing! Not only was his tiling really well done, but everything within the process was also impressive. From our initial meeting when he came to review the scope of work, to coordinating schedules (he even tiled while I was away at the hospital having my baby!), picking up materials (I purchased tile ahead and he picked them up), cleaning up at the end of each day, to managing the expenses and then the final payment—He was trustworthy, professional, meticulous and just an all around great person with a great attitude. I already have a few more projects I want to bring him on for and would hands down recommend him to anyone.

I had a number of issues with the tile company that I was working with (not enough tile sent, sent the wrong color, etc), so that extended the timeline of my kitchen floor project significantly. Juan was incredibly patient and flexible and use his own time on weekends to finish my project which I really appreciated and he did not have to do! I would definitely recommend him and use him again.

They arrived early, which was fine. They did a great job of cleaning the tile in my kitchen and bathroom, and replacing the caulking around the tub. I am very happy with the work and would hire again!

Paul did a fantastic job on our kitchen backsplash and I look forward to working with him on our next project. The results speak for themselves - perfectly aligned joints, smooth grout and outlets adjusted perfectly flush with the finished tile. I couldn't be more pleased.

I hired Hector to do the tile in the shower addition to my bathroom. This involved adding a shower pan, preparing the walls, and tiling the floor, walls, curb and recessed area in the shower. It turned out really nice and I've gotten lots of compliments. We had a little misunderstanding with the inspector and my primary contractor but in the end, it worked out. My primary contractor ended up flaking on the project and wasn't able to finish, so I hired Hector again to finish the bathroom. This involved patching the walls, replacing grout, and installing the shower door. Overall, he did a really nice job, was responsive and prompt and showed up when he said he would, and was a nice and respectful person to work with.

Bright Cleaning Service did a fantastic job on my apartment! I had them clean my tiles (ones that my landlord said couldn't be fixed) and the bathroom looks amazing! I had them back the next week to do a deep clean of my apartment. I will definitely be using them in the future.

Johan and his brother did a BIG floor tile demolition and new installation for us. We are REALLY happy with the job they have done. Johan communicated well in person or on text as the job progressed or ran into snags. Pricing was reasonable. Although it took a little longer than expected, we would definitely hire them again (in fact, we have already asked Johan for an estimate for another job!).

H&H did a fantastic job tiling our backsplash wall in out kitchen. They came in with a reasonable bid and project timeline and stuck to it. Both Hector and Tino showed up every morning on time, worked diligently, and cleaned up the kitchen after each day so it was usable. I was specific with what I wanted in terms of design layout and details, and Hector had no problem executing my vision. I'm very happy with their work and would recommend them as well as use them again. Thanks guys!

These guys are great. My prior tile and counter guys abandoned my job after they making some significant mistakes and I was in a pinch to find someone qualified to wrap up a couple of areas. Fat Rock responder quickly and happened to have a crew available on short notice. They were very professional and got the job done with zero issues. The installers were conscientious, making sure to ask plenty of questions. They care about their work and made sure to communicate with me if there were any issues. I highly recommend them based on my initial experience and as a small real residential developer and flipper, look forward to working with them again. These guys have the right mindset for success and will do very well.

Jensen can’t handle being questioned by his clients—not a good sign for a contractor. I spoke with Jensen a couple times and received a good quote. I then sent him some photos and a simple half-page contract. That’s where the problems started. He took issue with the standard clause that says he’ll be liable if he destroys my house, but we worked it out and I agreed to pay him more. I then sent him an email to confirm that he had experience working with glass tiles, since I had heard they can be difficult to work with. Here was Jensen’s response: “Im no longer interested...Your better of using someone else I don't have time for all this back and forth and questioning me if I know what I'm doing and so forth.” A contractor who refuses to answer basic questions from his client is a pretty big red flag. I should be grateful that Jensen showed his true colors before I let him destroy my house.
