Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Reviews for Palo Alto roofing professionals

Trudy M. Andresen 1813 Channing Ave. Palo Alto, CA 94303 Date of Service: November 5, 2021 Company: Reco Roofing, Julio Cervantes Julio and his crew get a 5-star rating. Julio was professional and gave a favorable quote. He listened and responded to the issue of repairing the roof at a reasonable cost. Another contractor didn’t listen and his quote listed an exorbitant price, I got the distinct feeling he was not honest, especially when he showed me photos of a very damaged roof. Definitely not mine! The Reco Roofing crew arrived exactly as promised. The work was completed in a reasonable amount of time. They explained what had been repaired and the overall state of the roof. They were a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend them. Trudy M. Andresen

Our roof was at its end of life so we needed a full replacement. It was very easy to schedule an inspection with them. Jose swung by within a day or so, explained each problem area clearly and provided us with a very competitive price soon after. It was a week with lots of rain and we were worried that our expired roof couldn't resist the rain any further. Luckily, Jose, Aldo and the crews were able to complete the project within a few days when the weather was temporarily sunny. The crews were polite and punctual. We are very happy with their work so far. Thanks Ardons Roofing for saving us from the rainy days!

Overall we have nothing negative but great respect and gratitude to the service we received from Jr Roofing & Gutter service. Specifically, after David got the permit from the city, his team tore off our roof on 11/22/2019. After a required inspection, David’s team began repairing many rotten or broken decking with new redwood and applying a new layer of plywood on the next day. The team continued to install a synthetic felt roof under-layment over solid wood decking and install new shingles around half of our roof on 11/24/2019. On 11/25/2019, another inspection of the roof plywood was approved and David’s crew continued to finish up all shingles and a skylight work. On 11/26/2019 early morning, David and his gutter experts began to install new gutters and did some final touches of the roof and painted some woods and parts of the chimney walls. By 2 pm on 11/26/2019, the entire job was completed with remarkably high quality just a few hours before a rainstorm arrived. This was not a coincidence but it was a “commitment” that David made to get the entire re-roofing done before the arrival of a rainstorm, which was forecast to come on 11/26/2019 evening. Importantly, David often worked with his crew and had been around to provide necessary supervision. David’s team removed all roofing debris from the Jobsite and kept the Jobsite clean daily. In addition, the cost of this project was reasonable and David tried to keep the cost as low as possible (but the cost depends on the needs and materials of individual project). By today (12/3/2019), it has been raining almost every day for 7 days and the new roof has not had any leaks thus far. Wow, what a great job that David and his crew had done in four days (including weekends). With all the facts, we thank David for his honesty, his commitment, his responsiveness, his willingness to help, and his high-quality work. Thus, we highly recommend David Miller without reservation.
