I had Paul over to my house for the second time when I was hosting a holiday dinner party for 7. Paul is uber passionate about what he does and it is extremely evident in the food he makes. It is a five star meal in your own home. He prepared appetizers and full course meal. Butternut squash soup that was to die for, salad, steak (everyone asked for different temps from rare to well done and all were perfectly done), veggies, smashed potatoes and dessert. I have a decent wine selection at my house and Cliff and Paul pair the wines with each part of the meal. He brings Cliff with him to serve as he is cooking and he is just a pleasure to be around. The first time I had Paul over I had 10 people and he executes the dinner with perfection. It is was all girls and we can get deep into girl talk and they just rolled with it, we all felt very comfortable around them both. He is worth every cent we paid, and this won't be the last time I invite him (and cliff) into my home.

Boris went above and beyond to make our firm’s holiday party a success. Despite a number of obstacles, including no onsite kitchen facilities, he produced a fantastic meal that was nicely presented for a reasonable price. I have used Boris for a number of other events and would not hesitate to recommend him. In addition to being a great chef, he is extremely conscientious and a genuinely nice person.

Excellent caterer, made our party fabulous. All of our guests commented on how good the barbecue was and how the potato salad rocked. Willing to do what it takes to get the job done right, polite, professional and accommodating, Dave and crew can be counted upon to do a superb job at a surprisingly affordable price.

Polkadot Dinners is our favorite caterer. Rachel is one of the most professional caterers I know in the area. Her food is absolutely amazing and her presentation of her display of food just ties in with the theme of her menu which is a added plus. Definitely within anyone budget she can make it happen. Highly recommended.

It was my husband's 50th bday and I wanted it to be extra special. I found Didi online and to be honest I was a little bit anxious because it was my first time to cater and for such a special event. I had a lot of questions but Didi was very patient and professional. She was quick to respond and I felt she treated me fairly. The FOOD - fabulous! The tri-tip and the smoked ribs were a smash hit! Our guests kept coming back for more! So I made a note to myself to double these portions next time! Days after the party my guests still were talking about how they loved those 'tips and ribs. DELIVERY AND PRESENTATION- spot on! On time, very professional and courteous staff. PRICE- reasonable! I ordered for 70 guests and it didn't feel like it broke the bank. Happy husband, happy guests - PRICELESS!

I used Kincy Catering for my birthday party. I requested food for 60 people. I contacted Kincy Catering two days prior to the party and he delivered! Kincy Catering provided lovely quality food for a great price! Mr. Kincy gives attention to detail so he provided exactly what I asked without complaint. He was able to provide delicious food in large quantities. I will refer everyone I know, and definitely use this service again!

Laurel helped me plan an amazing 30th Birthday Brunch. She was thoughtful with the menu and the food was fresh and seasonal, just as we discussed. There were roughly ~20 in attendance and her team made me feel like a guest at my own party. Will definitely use her again.

Gabriel and his team went above and beyond to make my welcome/rehearsal dinner on my wedding weekend the best! I reached out to him after reading other good reviews of this food truck and he called me back the same day and helped me find the perfect location! He talked to people who had their own venues also in order to help me. On the day of the event, they were set up and serving food on time, they provided music for the park and they were totally concerned with making me and my husband happy with everything. Without requiring extra compensation, he provided coolers for the booze we brought ourselves and he didn't require us to have bartenders or anything. However, if we wanted bartenders he would have helped us get them. Did I mention how amazing the food was?!? Everyone from our wedding is still raving about the pizzas and brisket that was served! It was so delicious!!!! Gabriel helped me out the whole way with this experience and I couldn't be more grateful! This food truck is a class act with top-of-the-line food. I'm the happiest customer, and I'm sure you would be too! Highly recommended!

A successful client appreciation party thanks to Michelle. She took all of the stress of the party off of my hands...prepared the food, set up, served, bartended, cleaned up. I was able to focus on my guests and enjoy the party. Thanks Michelle! I look forward to seeing you again at next year's party.

I hired La Escondida for my parents 25th anniversary party and it was just phenomenal. The food came out fresh and hot, and especially delicious. We started off with great appetizers and then to finish off with Mole, Chiles rellenos, and tacos as entrees. Everything ran smoothly and food came out at a rapid pace. My experience was great and I look forward for another big party because I will definitely have La Escondida cratering for me once again.

Wow! If you need a caterer that will work with you on your menu, is reasonably priced, food is WICKED GOOD and they have an awesome sense of humor Wicked Pig is your ideal caterer!!! The food was all bursting with flavor. We had Tri tip, Chicken and Portobella sandwich bar with a variety of salads and dessert for a family reunion; WP was a huge hit. Food and wine experts all wrapped up in one. The neighborhood was jealous from the aroma of the mesquite grill in our driveway. We are looking forward to planning another event so we can use the again. Theo and Carlo rocked it!!! Thank you!!!

I couldn't have asked for a better experience having Chrysalis Catering working my son's graduation party. Tameeka had great communication skills. She always kept in contact with me before and during the event. She was professional and attentive to the needs of the party and made sure the meal was prepared on time. My guests were also impressed with Tameeka and asked for her card to cater their future events. This was the first time I used this app and my wife and I were pleasantly surprised. Chrysalis Catering is top notch.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
