Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it better to repair or replace a roof?

It depends on the severity of the damage. If a falling branch or a windstorm damages an isolated patch of shingles, you could probably repair it. However, if the underlayment is damaged or if the whole roof is showing signs of wear, you might need to replace it.

Always have a professional roofer near you assess the roof before making a decision.

Can a handyman repair a roof?

A handyman may be able to repair simpler problems on a roof, such as damaged shingles or gutters. However, it’s important that you hire a pro who’s properly trained and skilled to handle your roof repairs. When in doubt, research the licensing requirements in your state, and review several handymen and roofers before making a decision.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

Do roofers offer remote or virtual services?

To find out the degree to which a roofing service can operate remotely, it’s best to contact local roofers and roofing repair specialists near you.

See if they will schedule a video call so that you can show them the project and get an idea of the cost. This will also allow them to give you recommendations on the type of roofing material, and the best time of year to do the project. You might also be able to book a roof installation or repair service far out in advance.

I recently bought a home and had an issue with cracked roof tiles. I received referral for Maginis Roofing through Thumbtack. Within a couple of days, John came and immediately repaired the tiles. He was professional and efficient and charged a fair price. I would definitely do business with him again.

We just bought our home and had a roof inspection that said we should be OK for another 3-5 years. We got a leak within the first month during the first bit of rain. I was frantic about finding someone to come out today. I called Ray and he said he could meet me at my home within 30 minutes. He almost beat me home. He had his men up on the roof checking for problem areas. They were able to glue down some loose areas. I felt that Ray knew roofing and trusted his advice and suggestions with repair and eventual re roofing. We will be contacting him again for any future roofing needs first.

Guy called me and scheduled a time to come over to do repairs. I asked for new flashing to address a leak around my chimney. Over the phone without inspecting the site, Guy said he already knew the cause of the problem: I needed a diverter. They arrived on time and worked for about half an hour, and did install the diverter, but failed to replace the flashing as I requested. As a compromise, he sprayed the old flashing with Rustoleum paint. It was $350, and he said there's a 2 year warranty on the work, but he didn't give me a receipt or any paperwork. (Photo is of finished work.) Getting another roofing company to come and re-inspect the roof, as I have no confidence in the repair. Unless you know precisely what you want done to your roof, I would avoid this contractor. If the 2nd opinion reveals that the work was adequate, and if they send me a receipt, I will raise the review from 1 star (terrible).

My experience with Max was incredibly unprofessional. I contacted him because my tenant informed me that there was a small leak in the kitchen coming from the roof. Max was very prompt to come out to look at the property. He explained to my husband that he believed the source of the leak was a small patch in the roof that had previously been repaired. He said he didn't want to pull everything back that day because there was rain in the forecast but he would come out the following week to give us a full estimate. He said he would order the tiles, pull the part back give us an estimate, if we were agreeable perfect he could fix it right away, if not he would just charge us for the box of tiles. Awesome sounded reasonable. Approximately a week passes, I hear nothing from him. I email him the day before the planned appointment to confirm, which he does says he will be out the next morning at 8 am. Fantastic, I let my tenant know. At 7:20 AM the day of the scheduled appointment he emails/doesn't call, so good thing I looked at my phone, to ask me if there is an attic. When I say no, he thinks it problematic because he thinks it's the pipes. I tell him that my tenant is very clear that it leaks when there is rain and it stops when there is no rain. He then tells me that he thinks it's best if I get a plumber out there and he doesn't want to come out until I get the plumber first. I tell him I still want him to come out and pull back the tiles and give me an estimate. I mean either way we should be able to see what it is, and I'm willing to pay. He then JUST CANCELS, tells me to go with another company. He should have been honest and told me 1- he didn't want the job 2- it was raining and didn't want to come out and 3 at the very least had the common courtesy to give me more notice than 30 minutes before the appointment especially when I've informed him that this is time sensitive for me. EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL! Max you say it's untrue - Please I invite you to tell me what is not true. I have screenshots of our discussions, would you like me to add those to my review and show everyone or simply apologize for your unprofessional behavior.
