Steve and another fellow (forgot his name, sorry!) took a look at my KitchenAid fridge and was able to identify the issue right away. Took less than an hour for them to fix the leak in the piping in the back and also found out that there was another leak and helped assess the severeness. Both men were very professional and I'm very happy with the result. Highly recommend!

Incredibly knowledgeable, clean and tidy during repair, able to fix the problem same day. I’ve already scheduled them to come back later in the week to work on a fridge issue I’ve been having.

I had Tom come over to see if he could expand my cabinet for my new fridge - however he was very helpful in pointing out that , the way stuff was setup - it was going to be very hard to put the fridge in without changing the cabinets and that was a no go. Giving a 5 stars for professionalism and helpfulness.

We've used these guys twice and had nothing but good experience. They scheduled us promptly, the gentleman showed up as expected, did a thorough and careful job in repairing the refrigerator. He explained to us carefully what the problem was, how much it would cost to fix it. and then he fixed the fridge. very professional.

Rafael is a very skilled and knowledgeable gentleman with a lot of experience who can help trouble shoot problems and find solutions in a very efficient manner. I am so grateful for finding him through this website. He was able to successfully fix our electrical outlet problem and explain the wiring system in our rental space, and to help our landlords understand the root of the problem. He also was able to fix our dishwasher (which was not on our request), in less than 15 minutes! We have his card on our fridge now as our official local handyman. Highly recommend!

These guys are really great. They responded really fast and asked me the right questions to understand exactly what was wrong with my fridge (I had a leak from the ice/water connection and it wasn't cooling enough) so they knew what to do. Nathan came that same day and within an hour it was fixed. He made sure not to make a mess and cleaned up after himself. He was courteous and really professional and the price was reasonable. I would totally recommend them.

Max was great. The Kitchenaid fridge was a loss. Freezer door completely stuck shut due to overflowed frozen ice maker. Max worked hard and no one could have really fixed the situation. I actually paid him more than he asked because he was so polite and did all he could in an impossible situation. Tip: never buy a freezer on the bottom fridge. If it freezes up, you’re completely out of options unless you want to turn it off for days while it melts all over your floor til you can open the door.

Quite simply put - SM Value Appliance Repair is an outstanding company to work with. Had another company send two different technicians to try and diagnose an issue with a sealed system issue with my Sub Zero. It's an older fridge, but has never had a problem until now, so I definitely wanted to repair it. Suffice to say, after 2 weeks of them trying to fix, with several different technicians, I received a full refund from company 1. Based on good reviews online, I reached out to SM Value to see if they could help me. Sergey came the next day to diagnose. He did agree with the first company's diagnosis that there was a sealed system problem, and promptly provided me with a quote to fix the fridge. I agreed to move forward, and once he had the parts necessary 2 days later, he came back and fixed my fridge. Sergey was knowledgeable, courteous, and on time! I wish I had gone with SM Value the first time, instead of wasting my time with a company that didn't know how to work on high end refrigerators!

I needed someone to fix my garbage disposal and Charles came by to do that. I shouldn’t be saying this because it will probably raise your expectations but I was just so amazed: Charles was so fast fixing my garbage disposal (he even scrubbed my sink and shined my faucet after!) that he asked me what else he could do since he charges 1 hour minimum. He ended up unclogging a bathtub, pulling all the gobs of hair out of a bathroom sink drain, fixed a wall heater the landlord refused to fix, changed 4 light bulbs, replaced the falling light fixture in the kitchen, diagnosed a problem with my fridge, and stopped the squealing sound in a few door hinges. Again, he did all of this in under an hour. Impressed is an understatement. Thank you Charles!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes refrigerators?

Typically, appliance repair technicians who offer refrigeration repair also work with washers, dryers, dishwashers and other household appliances. While there is no formal training required to be an appliance repair technician, consider certification requirements, as the technician should know how to safely work with refrigerants (the chemical that keeps your fridge cold) and substitute refrigerants such as HFCs. You should also read reviews to get a sense of the pro’s experience and reputation. The appliance repair pro will come to your home, bringing all the necessary tools for diagnosis. They may need to order parts to complete the job, but all the work will take place in your home. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.
