From another pest control inspection, I was notified that I had a "rat" problem. This company specialized in insects (free inspection for another problem inside the house). I went to Thumbtack and put out a bid to see what the cost would be for Rodent removal. Thank goodness I did cause I was able to find and meet Cruz! Cruz instantly responded and we setup a phone call. I let him know of the situation and we setup a time for a free inspection. Cruz came on time as promised (came all the way from Daly City to San Jose in morning traffic). Cruz inspected the premises including the external garage (where droppings were found), and also looked into the Attic and Crawl Space. (Note: The other company did not do that and only offered that inspection after signing up for their service). Cruz looked at the droppings and determined that they were actually mice and not rats! He also gave me a quote that was half of what the other company quoted. Cruz helped me setup all the traps, will come back to monitor throughout the weeks ahead and did a great job proofing all around my home. He also has a satisfaction guarantee! If I have any rodent problems in the future, I'm going to be calling Cruz!

Talked to several companies about rodent-proofing (possible removal) and cleaning. Shlomi at ESI was the most professional and informative of those I spoke with and compared to other companies, his seems to be much more thorough and willing to answer a lot of questions. He was very prompt and responsive, showed up on time (they gave me a 2 hour window, but he called to tell me when he'd arrive), did some work after the initial inspection and then returned to complete the job. Unlike other companies (offering rodent services), ESI includes the follow ups in the initial cost so they'll return a few times to make sure the job was done right and that no other entry points remain. I'd recommend ESI and Shlomi for such work as well as furnace maintenance and duct cleaning as well - great team and even better service!

I had a splintered Douglas Fir floor that I just didn’t know how to fix with guests coming for a visit to n days. Guy responded to my request right away. He had his partner Mike repair the flooring in such a way that one can barely see where the splinter and gaps were. While Mike was there he took a look at another wood project and pulled off a miracle with sanding, staining and coating. I can’t recommend these guys enough. They have integrity and do not over charge. They really care about the customer. I am not only satisfied but appreciative of their fine workmanship.

Attic Cat offers full service rodent removal, i.e., sealing holes as well as putting out traps. Scheduling the initial inspection was easy and prompt, and Niv laid out the steps in a straightforward manner. The company's services didn't come cheap, but we went with them because of their 3-year warranty (as a comparison, another company quoted half the amount but including only 4 visits). And boy, did we call on them. So on the one hand, the initial sealing job was not 100% because our rat king continued to torment us for almost 2 months afterwards. On the other, and to Attic Cat's credit, Niv and his crew were always responsive (via text or email) to our requests for additional visits. Kudos goes to the 2-man crew of Jose and his sidekick (sorry, can't remember his name), who thoroughly scoured our house to get to the rat. I recommend the company if you're looking for a full service removal and suggest you ask for Jose by name.

I have tried ALL means available to rid my house of the occasional rat, only to have them return and bring a friend. There had to be someone that knew the way to stop this. Brett Higbee of 5 Star is the man. He contacted me and could come check out the problem right away. He checked high, low and everywhere in between. He saw the problem, gave me a great price and could start right away. He got the job done in a day and guaranteed it for a year! What?? No revisits with sprays and Redos? We will see about that! This job was completed on June 10th. Since then I haven't seen any type of rodent or anysign of them. I waited until now, over a month, to write about this because I wanted to make sure this was the real deal. I have family members who have tried other companies for rodent issues. They started the process before me and they still see no progress in rodent removal. Their company keeps coming back but still no results. They are so upset about the wasted money and time. Don't put yourself through that disappointment. Call Brett and 5 Star and get rid of your pests. I'm so happy with the results! It should be called 10 Star!

CrawlSpace Clean was thorough and professional. We really appreciated the time they took to make sure we understood what needed to be repaired under the house and why. He also sent follow up photos after cleaning up the rodent feces and removing the old insulation. We are extremely happy with their service.

Bridget did a very professional and diligent job. There are several reasons why i would highly recommend Bridget to anyone seeking help with animal removal: - Bridget went the extra mile of advising me on how to handle the animal situation in the future. She did not just do her job and leave, she ensured that we felt less anxious if a similar situation arose in the future - Bridget periodically followed up to ensure that there was no delay between trapping the animal and releasing it in a safe area - Bridget fed the animal and released it in a safe area (far far away from my house) - Bridget did a thorough inspection of not only the area where the animal was spotted but for other potential places where they could be found - Bridget is highly knowledgeable about the behavior and traits of wildlife animals Would highly recommend Bridget!

RIP PEST CONTROL IS THE BEST. We've had a skunk problem that ended up becoming more and more of a nuisance since we've moved into this house. Skunks and apparently a whole cluster of animals decided to make our crawl space their accommodations for this winter. Something tore its way through the vents outside our house leading straight into the crawl space under the house. These rodents would have these parties and occasionally fights would break out from the sounds emitting from under the house. The skunks won, because after a cluster f k of noises a very pungent smell entered the house all starting from this one area where of the house where this vent opening was. I call it the door to the Hereford club; which by the way shares a wall with the master bedroom my room. Long story short after one early bar room brawl at 7 am waking my heavy sleeping butt up to what sounded like a bunch of high pitch squeaks scratches and screams the skunk unleashed every ounce of smell in that thing ass. It Stunk up the house for five days! My clothes, my room, my tempurpedic, my car in the garage, the guest room, central heating vents, the whole house, backyard, stank stank stank stank stank. I searched 24hr skunk removal that very second and RIP Saved the day... threes hours later got a quote, on the way to work made a call... two skunks, two possums and a cat later... vents are all sealed with heavy gague wire and from what it seems problem eradicated. Anthony was there every step of the way and is a sincere dude. Didn't charge for animials that weren't meant to be caught, did it in a very humane way using live trap Catch and release, his logistics woman manning the phones is efficient as well. Very well ran situation here based off my first impression... and the multiple visits after... not to mention the consistent following up with me to make sure things were going well and the added pest proofing at the end... the man is a ninja of controlling pest! especially stinky ones, without getting sprayed too I seen it with my own eyes... thank god cause one more spray and I would've shot those mo foes! Skunk sloppy joes!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do pest control companies do?

Pest control companies handle all aspects of bug, rodent and animal extermination or removal. Pest control professionals visit your home or office to identify the type of pest that is troubling you and offer various treatment plans — complete with clearly outlined costs. Once you and the pest control company have a signed agreement, the pro will begin treatment. Pest treatment can range from the use of spray pesticides and gel bait to live and/or kill traps. There are a wide range of types of pesticides, many of them nontoxic for humans and other small animals. This means you may be able to have your home treated for pests without harming nearby wildlife or your dog and cat. The pest control pro will carry out the treatment plan and, depending on the service agreement, provide follow-up such as emptying traps, inspecting access points, or reapplying pesticide spray if the pests return. Costs will vary based on the type of pest you are having removed and the extent of the infestation. The average national pest control price range is $80-$130. From a minor bedbug event to an entire home termite infestation, pest control companies have got you covered.

How much does it cost to treat a house for termites?

Termites are not only creepy-crawly, they can literally eat your house out from underneath you. Termites feed on damp and dry wood and can chomp through your house at an alarming rate. The national average pest control cost for termite extermination is $240-$400. Treatment costs can be higher for an extensive infestation. Here are some examples of average pest control costs for termites:

    • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites: $3-$4 per linear foot.
      • For $75 per year, a company may offer a maintenance plan that provides inspection of the property and renewal of the warranty.
    • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites: approximately $400 for a 2,000-square-foot home at $3-$5 per linear foot.
      • The price is higher for additional work such as foaming and drilling inside of concrete slabs.
    • Fumigation treatment of drywood termites: $1,200-$1,500 for a 30,000- to 35,000-cubic-foot home
      • Fumigation is measured in cubic feet because it fills the airspace of the home and infiltrates the wood that the termites may be colonizing. The cost of fumigation is affected by the number of levels in the home as well as the square footage.

How much does it cost to get rid of cockroaches?

Cockroaches are not only ugly, they are difficult to get rid of. Quick and resilient, they can be hard to get rid of without professional help once they have inhabited a house. Nationally, the average range for cockroach pest control cost is $80-$130. Extermination professionals typically provide a free estimate to determine the extent of the infestation. They’ll check for the main sources of the bugs, identify bug access and entry points into your home, and determine the best method for elimination. There are a variety of cockroach extermination tools including gel baits and traps, pesticide foggers, desiccants (which dry out the cockroaches), neurotoxins, and other pesticides. Pest control costs can also cover preventive measures like regular spraying and trap maintenance. Some regions of the country are much more prone to cockroach problems than others, so pest control costs may need to be part of your quarterly budget. Cockroaches love dark, humid, and warm areas and water sources, so place traps near your washer and dryer and under your sinks.

How much does it cost to remove a mouse?

If you have a mouse in your house you’re probably quickly researching pest control costs. Mice, although tiny, can transmit diseases and also get into your food and leave unsanitary droppings around your home. If you have seen one mouse in your house, it’s likely that more have taken up residence in your crawl space, attic or basement. The national average pest control cost is $150-$200. Costs can vary depending on whether you need to get rid of a population of living mice or just dispose of a dead mouse (or full traps), how extensive the mouse population is, and where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pest control cost for removing a mouse:

    • $150 for initial trap setup and inspection (and sealing of entry holes).
      • $50 for rodent removal service calls and emptying of traps. This visit can also include identifying and sealing entry points that were not sealed on the first visit.
    • Rodent extermination: $110-$350, depending on how heavy the rodent population is, whether the mouse infestation poses health risks, how many entrances exist and how many rodent bait stations are needed.

How much does it cost to get a pest inspection?

In general there is no cost for a pest inspection. Exterminators typically provide a free property or building inspection and then provide you with a written estimate outlining the necessary treatment and cost. The home visit allows the exterminator to assess the problem and let you know what your pest control cost will be if you contract with their services. You may need a termite inspection for real estate purposes. This will be a verified inspection showing that the house in question is termite-free (often done before a sale). The inspection may cost a flat rate, such as $125-$150, depending on house size.

It’s hard to predict pest control costs sight unseen due to the variety of factors that go into pest treatment. For example, a bedbug problem for one customer may be confined to one room and be easy to access and treat in one visit if the room is clear of clutter and the bedbugs have been caught early. In another home, a bedbug problem may also be confined to one room, but there’s a great deal of clutter, providing more hiding places for the bugs and requiring more spray and labor for the exterminator, as well as many pieces of large furniture in the room that need to sprayed. Depending on the maturity of the infestation, a bedbug problem may require multiple visits to entirely eliminate. This is why many companies provide a free inspection to determine pest control costs and provide you the most accurate quote possible.
