I was in a bind, trying to get a house on the market and had some unexpected handyman projects pop up. David did the job the same evening I called, did excellent work and charged a reasonable price. I highly recommend him.

Harp was great and professional. I had many small home repairs. I patched and paint my dry wall, mounted projector and two tvs. He mounted my Tv above the fireplace where another handyman failed to do so. He also installed my new shower and fixed my sink. I highly recommended him and want to work again with him.

Carlos has been my greatest find on Thumbtack. So much so, I didn't want to give him a review that would make him too busy to work for us! While we were hiring for a handyman, Carlos brings an advanced skill set that allowed us to give him projects beyond what we were looking for. Carlos has a depth and breadth of experience that is reflected in the superior work he executed. We had him do things as simple as caulking a kitchen sink to patching holes in the building (that were allowing rodents to enter) to requiring an electrical outlet. He was enthusiastic about his tasks, and was relatable and great when working with the tenants, some of whom can be challenging. I found him to be very pleasant to work with, trustworthy, prompt (a big one for me!), and honest. Carlos was very open regarding what on our punch list he could and couldn't do well. This was very appreciated, as we have had people say they could do something that they couldn't do well, causing a larger problem in the end. Carlos has great communication and follow up skills. He also was able to provide alternate solutions to problems we had, often solutions that were less expensive/less hours of work for him, but an equal or better solve. I have been looking for someone to help manage our rental property for some time, and am excited to have found him. We will continue to have Carlos work with us to maintain our property and keep out tenants happy.

I was in urgent need for a handyman, as a large part of a wall, insulation & floor in my storage closet was damaged by my leaking water heater. I decided to try Thumbtack and was very happy to see that Arisel from AA Cardenas reached out to me and said he can start work immediately. He was very prompt in replying, and very easy to reach on phone & text before, during and after the work was completed. When he came, he assessed the work to be done, gave me a very clear outline of materials needed and the labor cost. He told me he could finish the work in 2 days, which is exactly what my deadline was, and he did finish all the work in 2 days flat! He offered to go and pick up all the material from the hardware store, and worked till late on the first day to make sure he got as much work done as possible. He was very professional in putting up new insulation, patch sheet rock, applying texture to blend with existing wall texture and paint the area. He always cleaned up before he left and was very open to me asking questions about various things he was working on. Arisel was very nice to talk to as well, and he was accommodating to all my questions. He even came back 4 days later, at my request, to put floor molding. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the work Arisel did, and would definitely hire him again.

While searching the internet for someone to remove our 12-year-old carpet from our two-bedroom flat, I found many referrals for carpet installation and floor refinishing, but nothing for carpet removal only. I then ran across a listing from Thumbtack, and thought I’d give it a try. The site was very easy to use. It asked me specific questions regarding the job, and within minutes I received emails from three people in my area that included price quotes. I chose one (Brian’s Handyman Services) and communicated further with Brian to clarify details. He booked the job for the next day. Brian sent me a text stating that he was on his way, and he arrived on time. He brought Carlos with him and the two of them began working immediately. If you’ve ever removed carpet, you know it’s a tedious job: it includes pulling up the carpet and pad, cutting them into pieces, pulling out all of the staples from the floor, removing the tack strips, and disposing of the carpet and pad. Brian and Carlos not only did that, but they moved our large pieces of furniture around in order to accomplish it. When they left, there was NO mess for us to clean up. Furniture was back into place and floors were swept. Brian even bolted four large pieces of furniture back onto the wall that had to be unbolted and moved in order to remove the carpet under them. Brian stuck with his original quote, even though the job turned out to be larger than expected. I can’t say enough kind things about Brian and Carlos and the professional job they did. They were fantastic! If you want someone who is honest, fair, flexible, and easy to work with, I highly recommend Brian’s Handyman Services for anything you need done at your home—and it sounds like he can do everything. You can contact Brian through Thumbtack on the internet.

Cruz is AWESOME! Really nice and honest guy! Professional and friendly. He responded to my request within minutes when I submitted my request at night on a Saturday. He was available and at our house the very next morning at 7:45am to handle our rodent problem! I have more things for him to do and will continue working with him - he's also a handyman! 😊 He knows his stuff!

Ricardo was our handyman while we lived in Belmont, Redwood City and even when we moved to Alamo, California. He was an excellent carpenter, handyman and Jack-of-all-trades ... always accommodating and cheerful. He was punctual, reliable and very creative in home repair challenges...always thought "outside the box". Ricardo was always a pleasure to have around while working on projects in our homes. We wish we could have taken him with us when we moved to Eagle, Idaho -- we really miss him!!!

I needed some paint and other hauling. I decided at the same time I would get a new kitchen faucet installed. Every aspect was flawless and pleasant. Good communication, fast response, first rate work, and a fraction of the price of others. I will use for my other handyman needs.

My husband and I had to renovate the home for AIRBNB and we had to get everything organize in a timely manner. Davis showed up promptly to help us clean the house and redo the rooms. He also went out of his way to assist us with prepping the living room. We totally recommend him for anyone who needs a reliable handyman.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
