Pete was great to work with! He REALLY knows his stuff when it comes to catering. He made suggestions to make the event better for the guests and also was available to me by phone, text and email. Pete and his team catered my wedding in Sonoma. I was an out of town Bride from San Diego and had a hard time selecting vendors. Pete gave me references to call and also made a trip to meet with us at the venue months before the wedding. He and his team did a great job staffing the event. All the wedding guests raved about his food. He also was so easy to work with and created a fun menu for us filled with the Bride and Grooms favorite entrees from all types of cuisine. He is knowledge, honest, and makes delicious foods. I highly recommend Pete and am sure we will work with him again in the future to cater other parties. Thanks Pete!

Sat did a wonderful catering job for our luncheon of fifty people this past weekend. I was a little hesitant at first because I didn't know his work and he didn't have his website up and running. I'm glad I took a chance as he came through with shining colors.

Working with any caterer can be an overwhelming process, especially when time allocation and budget is tight; and you want everything done right. With "A Plus Catering" I would say to trust the process. Like the line from the movie Shakespeare In Love, "It Will All Work Out In The End" and you and your guest will be extremely happy at the end of the process. Jennine and the staff at "A Plus Catering" are professionals and they will take good care of you and your guest. Her team was extremely courteous and demonstrated a high level of flexibility to meet the needs of my guest. Unlike big party chains, and hotel venues; making the customer happy is Jennine's top priority. So it goes without saying that the food was very good, the serving team was excellent, and if your event calls for a bartender; she got you! And, if there is a problem, call her; she got you! Open communication worked for me. "Peace of Mind" is what you get with "A Plus Catering". Peace of mind that she is there for you and that this is not just a business, but personal to her. I hope this review was helpful for you.

We used Debbie to cater our office holiday luncheon. We loved working with her every step of the way. From the beginning she was enthusiastic to talk with us and very helpful in planning out the menu. She was fast getting back to us with any questions and requests we had. She was accommodating with our special requests and making sure we had everything we needed/wanted. Most importantly though, THE FOOD WAS AMAZING! Everything was homemade and delicious, our employees were still talking about it the next week. One of our dishes was a roasted turkey and it was incredibly moist, so good. The deserts we all so tasty (a chocolate cake, apple crumble, and pumpkin pie) and she made homemade whipped cream to go on top...YUUUM. Debbie and Made with Love catering was a delight to work with and we definitely plan to use her for future events. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

We were in a bind. It was Tuesday and we were hosting a bridal shower with 40 guests on Saturday. Thumbtack was easy to use and quickly got us in contact with Stephanie. Stephanie was available to speak on the phone that evening, was flexible and creative with the menu, and affordable! The day of the party, Stephanie and her staff member were punctual and professional. Food was plentiful, too. After the luncheon, they helped clean the dishes and pack up the leftovers. Thanks to Stephanie's Catering, our shower was a success!

Paul and his team did an amazing job at our outdoor wedding in Sonoma County, September 2016. We loved the food from the first tasting and Paul worked with my dietary restrictions with ease and professionalism and we were able to come up with a menu that served all. On the day, we heard nothing but positive feedback and reviews from our guests about the food being exceptional. I highly recommend Nitro BBQ and Catering for your next event.

Alisa made everything I asked her to make and presented it beautifullly. She catered a High School graduation all night party held at the High School. She cooked the hot food for our diner on the premises. She had the appetizer platters premade and ready to go. She came early which I appreciated, and the food was made and served on time. I asked her to leave the leftovers for the kids and adult volunteers to graze on as the night went on and she did. We met at the school weeks before the event to coordinate where the cooking would be done. Also how and where things would be served. The quality of her work exceeded my expectations. I was personally nervous and wanted the diner I had set up for the kids to be perfect. Alisa helped make that happen. I would highly recommend Alisa as she was very detail oriented and did a magnificant job!

Michelle catered a dinner celebrating my wife's birthday, and it was an amazing experience. Her food was delicious, and she used really great ingredients too. I also like that she brought beautiful flowers and candles to improve the warmth of the space. She even printed menus to distribute. A lot of nice touches. Very responsive and friendly!

The Brass Spatula catered a 60th birthday party for us, providing hors d'oeuvres, dinner, and a lovely birthday cake for 60 people. They also arranged for all of the infrastructure, such as tables, chairs, flatware, silverware, etc. Everything Brass Spatula did was absolutely brilliant. The dishes were all delicious and fresh, and the service was friendly, flexible, and efficient, and the final clean-up was perfect. This birthday bash was a huge success because of the wonderful catering by Brass Spatula.

Daniel was an amazing caterer. He was extremely prompt and came with most of the catering gear he needed (which is good because I have very few kitchen tools). Our entire group loved the food: cheese/meat course, tuna tartar, couscous, salmon, and tiramisu. It was delicious! And as a bonus, we did not need to clean up :)

I hired Olive for my birthday party and they are hands down the best catering experience I've ever had for reasonable prices. The value simply can't be beat! We had the Moroccan salmon, a lamb dish and some side options and they were all delicious. Both Arkadi and Elinor went an ve and beyond to make this experience go smooth. I will certainly be asking for services in the future for both private parties and work related events.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
