My sister told me that "no one remembers the food at a weddings!" However after she had the food of Chef Pete she told my mom, "I was wrong- because people will definitely remember THIS dinner!" Everyone was commenting on how good the food was! We even had a diverse range of dietary restrictions in the crowd. Pete made me feel confident in his catering services from day 1. He was great about calling on the phone and then following up with email for final quote. The food was exceptional especially for a wedding of 80 people! Pete also had great staff who everyone commented on. They had matching outfits and looked very professional. Definitely hire Pete Coleman if you want the wedding dinner of your dreams. Oh and this was all the week of the fires and he was super flexible about last minute changes to our venue and to our date. He was seriously the best. Thank you Chef Pete!

I've known Grace for many years. I have been over to her house for home cooked meals that were truly gourmet, and delicious. She also prepared some food and sold it from her home. On the level of catering for large parties, I went to our friend Dave's party last month were Grace did the catering. The food was flawless, delicious, with great presentation, and great variety. I strongly recommend Grace for catering your events.

From the point of connecting with Daniella about my dinner party, to meeting with her in person beforehand to discuss menu and pricing, and on to the event itself, there was never a time I didn't feel confident in her experience and her ability to pull off a fantastic Greek dinner for my friend's 60th birthday. And that she did! My friends are still raving about her and I could not have been more pleased with every single detail. Food was fabulous! I highly recommend Daniella for any catering needs or for cooking for a private party. She handles it all. Wish I could have her cook for me on a regular basis!

Rose Johnson Catering was my party partner for our son’s engagement celebration last weekend in Orinda. The party was a huge success, and Rose and her team deserve much credit for the success. Rose responded to my Thumbtack inquiry with a prompt, thorough, and reasonable bid. However, after viewing her beautiful website, I replied to Rose that while I personally thought her menus were perfection, my son had specified that he did not want the food for his party to be “too fancy.” I told Rose the party would be a casual afternoon affair on our deck and I feared her culinary talents would be wasted on my son and my husband. Rose persevered, pointing out in her reply that she could do a barbecue with a southwestern flavor. The food need not be "fancy," she observed, but it should be tasty. And she sent me a custom menu that my son, his fiancée, my sisters, my husband and I all proclaimed perfect, including seared medium rare tri-tip of beef with chimichurri sauce, grilled cilantro chicken with tortillas, chipotle laced potato salad, and Mexican rice, bean, and corn salad. But Rose did not stop with sending me the menu; she said she would use my kitchen and grill on my deck, ensuring the food would be fresh as well as tasty. And after I hired her, she came to my home to check out my kitchen, my deck, and my grill and advised me on renting and setting up dining rounds and serving tables, as well as how to ensure good traffic flow for 50 guests. Rose is a real party expert, and I am not, so her advice was very much appreciated. The day of the party, Rose, Floricel and Esteban arrived a full two hours early and took charge. I hired Rose Johnson Catering for the food, which they delivered beautifully. As it turned out, they helped with the entire party, going above and beyond in many instances and showing poise and flexibility in the face of surprises, like my son’s decision to give a speech and set off a round of champagne toasts before dessert. Rose poured the champagne herself. Several guests asked me during the party: Who catered this? Who is your caterer? I happily provided several referrals to Rose Johnson Catering. Guest comments about the food were very positive: Mike: “The tri-tip was great.” Helen: “The grilled chicken was fabulous.” Kay: “I loved the potato salad. And the guacamole was wonderful.” Liz: “So nice to have so many dishes gluten-free.” Cindy: “The brownies were amazing. I told them so.” Bill: “Those parfaits were a big hit.” Matt: “Great food! Great service!” There was plenty of food for 50 guests, even with 1/3 of them being hungry 20-something friends of my son’s from high school and college. We even had leftovers, which Rose packed up and left in my refrigerator, along with leaving my kitchen cleaner than she found it. My husband, son, future daughter-in-law and I made a brunch of the leftovers the next day, sharing the delicious food and happy memories of a wonderful party. Best of all, this was the first party I’ve ever hosted where I had a great time myself. I don’t think I’ll have another big party again without booking Rose Johnson Catering!

Don't look any further: LL Services is the BEST! They catered a women's luncheon in my home, and I found their friendly manner, professionalism and responsiveness to be unmatched. They offered flexible menu options with fresh, creative and delicious selections. My guests went back not only for seconds, but thirds, and they all left with a business card for their own catering needs. Don't pass up the opportunity to have them cater your next event.

My friend recently celebrated her 50th birthday. Her wish? To have a catered dinner at home where she could relax and enjoy a wonderful evening of food, vino and friends. My decision to go with Rainbow Chefs was the BEST CHOICE! They worked with me to create the menu which the chef cooked to PERFECTION! It was a joy to see the guests "ooohh" and "aahhh" as each dish was brought out...Having Rainbow Chefs prepare, serve and clean up allowed the hostesses (me and my friend) to enjoy the event too! It was truly a magical night...I highly recommend them!

Basic Catering is much more than catering company, it is a full service event company. Aristotle says "if a man does many things, they cannot do one thing well." That's not the case with Basic Catering. I hired them for a small wedding reception, and I was very impressed with their service. I'll list them as follows: 1. All my guests raved about the food. It was perfectly cooked and the quantity was worth the value. 2. They rent out their own party rentals (tables, silverware, plates, etc.) at a cost cheaper than the competitors. This was significant savings for me with no sacrifice on the quality. This also made clean-up a lot easier. I was not worried about the clean-up, but it did save me on venue costs. (They also do flowers) 3. Lastly, the most impressive aspect of Basic Catering is their professionalism. There will always be something missing or something that goes wrong. Their team is extremely resourceful, from their planners (Ben) to the people executing (Carie) and the waitstaff -- I am a big fan of resourcefulness. They thought of things I missed, and if something was wrong they made it right. They are quick and smart, and know how to get things done. They assisted in making one of the most significant days of my life a wonderful event. Thanks Ben. You did a fantastic job coordinating.

Dennis is everything an amazing catering should be: responsive, efficient, polite and purveyor of absolutely delicious food! We hired Dennis to cater dinner for a team offsite, and it went over marvelously. He arrived right on time, set up everything without needing much oversight, served up the food to our team, then cleaned up everything himself. All while chatting up our team and with a smile. We will absolutely be hiring him again for future catering events.

Daniel was an amazing caterer. He was extremely prompt and came with most of the catering gear he needed (which is good because I have very few kitchen tools). Our entire group loved the food: cheese/meat course, tuna tartar, couscous, salmon, and tiramisu. It was delicious! And as a bonus, we did not need to clean up :)

Don't overthink it or be torn. Hands down, Avocado and Company is sheer excellence in many ways. I'm a wedding planner and working with them was one of the most impressive and refreshing experiences for our team within the event industry. Reasons why you need Avocado for your event: * Ryan leads a well-run machine team...punctual, swift, thinks 2-steps ahead, professional, friendly and cohesive to get the job done RIGHT * Food was raved highly by all guests and vendors. Not only were the flavors magical in every dish, but the presentation was great too. Even for the vendor meals! * Between the catering team and my event team, we nailed some of the surprises that came our way, together as ONE team. Really awesome to merge forces together when necessary and see fires be put out immediately, without alarming the bride & groom. Avocado and Company is genuine, authentic and you will be incredibly satisfied from every angle of the process. If you want your guests to be talking about your food for months, or even years, you need to hire them now. You truly won't regret it!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
