Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Pete is an excellent trainer. Even though, with previous dogs, we have been through several types of training. Having Pete in the home he shows us real world ways to train our Samoyed puppy in such a way as she doesn't forget what she learned as soon as she leaves the trainer's premise. Highly recommend Better Manners for any dog training needs.

Mike came to assess our dog who is aggressive. In the first session he was able to calm our dog down...we were very impressed. We have hired him to continue training!!

Kara was very helpful with some basic obedience training for my dog! She was always on time and had a plan each week for what we would be learning and what I needed to practice with my dog until the next week. My dog is blind in one eye and she would always take that into consideration to make sure he was still learning everything correctly. I would recommend her because my dog learned a lot and I also learned a lot about how to train him!

Tyler has been great with my dog and I. We keep running into traffic problems, but regardless he comes with his best foot forward and is really understanding to all situations. My dog has already started to make progress and it shows - he has been working with us on anxiety. He is a great dog trainer!

Dion is a very knowledgeable dog trainer and glad we hired him to train our Border Collie puppy, Sammy, and me. I work with Sammy every day and have seen great results, and we are only half way through the 8 week course. I look forward to the remainder of the training.

Zach responded quickly and professionally; and we are so glad we chose him to help us train our blind dog Crash to be less reactive around strange sounds. He walked in and already in the doorway was giving us good tips, and then was immediately ready for a walk around the neighborhood, telling us tips and tricks around the way. He brought two of his dogs to help as well. We tried all sorts of different training situations throughout the 90 minutes and Zach was professional and friendly the whole time. He texted us links to the leash and harness he used immediately after as well. Most importantly, our dog liked him too! Would recommend a training session with to my family and friends for some really useful info.

First time dog owner. This incredibly smart gentleman made me feel as though I really could successfully train my dog. He was kind and thorough. Put me, my husband, and my puppy at ease. Some people are truly gifted and I appreciate the time he took with us.

I was very impressed with his knowledge. I have taken my dog as far as I can go with my experience and started looking for someone to help me go further with him. This trainer is very experienced and takes time to answer questions. He really seems to care that he teaches the owner in the correct manner so I can get the best out of my dog. I am looking very forward to working with this trainer especially after watching him work with his own dog during our first visit. I was highly impressed and can't wait to get my pup to that level.

The gentleman, (Mike) whom runs his business is a nice man, whom is very good at his work. He is retired, but needed to do something, and training is a passion of his. He is training the human to get a dog's attention and keep it. I hope to further the training in the very near future. Thank you Mike. You made me feel comfortable from the beginning. Hoping to keep seeing more of you in the future.

Haven’t started our training yet but we are very excited to work with Dion. Have spoken with him multiple times and am very confident he will be able to get our dogs trained and teach us what we need to know. Very professional and accommodating. Has answered all questions and given tips for our puppy.

Within the few minutes Mike was there I was already starting to see a change in my dogs behavior, one of those behaviors that changed was his barking, he went from non stop barking to being able to stand right next to Mike! I can’t wait to see the results within my dog once all the training is done!

Michelle and Michael showed up early to our first appointment. Immediately, they started working with my crazy dog, Pixie. Within 2 minutes, I saw potential in my dog that I had never seen! Pixie's weakness has been visitors to our home. Michelle and Michael showed me there is hope for my houseguests to have a doggy harassment-free visit! They both took time to explain their training techniques, and doggy philosophy. Their passion for dogs shows in their work, and I could not be more pleased to have them training me and Pixie! I love that they use a positive reinforcement approach! And Pixie loves the many treats she gets to have for putting her butt on the ground! So excited to continue working with Omni Canine Services!

I have a reactive one year-old GSD that Mike was a great help with. Within a couple sessions, she was so much more obedient while walking her and I felt like I for once had control. Not only does Mike help with training your dog, but also in understanding your dog's mind and how your behavior affects them. I feel so much more at ease after getting Mike's help. Thanks Mike!

I recently got a German Shepherd puppy and, after 5 years since last having a puppy, I needed a refresher on training. Mike has been responsive and is extremely knowledgeable. I truly admire his passion for dogs and really caring about not only the interaction he is having with my puppy, but my two other dogs, and making sure if I have questions that they are answered. We have only had a couple sessions at this point, but I am so excited to continue working with Mike and learning everything he has to teach. I would gladly recommend him to anyone who wants to find someone that gives training a personal touch and not only connects with their pup, but the person he is working with.

The progress I've seen within a few sessions is absolutely amazing. Peter has shown me how to communicate with my 6 year old boxer in ways I never thought possible. I learned more about her body language and behavior in 30 minutes than I had in the previous 6 years owning her! Peter works to improve the relationship between dog and owner, not just training the dog to take commands. It's about building trust and respect. Totally worth the money and effort. If you're looking to create a positive relationship with your pet, Better Manners is most definitely the one to call.

Mike was wonderful, and amazing to work with. He helped with our reactive, unsocialized, and aggressive pit bull. He gave us all the tools to command respect and attention from our dog, and were able to see drastic results immediately. With the training and tools from mike we still have a few things to work on, but with the proper guidance and advice from mike, we will be problem free with much stronger bond

Mike was great! From the moment he walked in our house, he was establishing a relationship with our Golden Retriever, Rocky. He trained us on how to walk him correctly and get what we want - no pulling and authority. He was incredibly honest with us on how to work the relationship with our dog on how to get the behaviors we want out of him. There are so many things I didn’t realize I wasn’t doing correctly with how my puppy views things.
