Out of four hiring’s we have made on Thumbtack for residential home improvements, Jim by far has been the finest contractor we have worked with. From the start Jim was on-time, accommodating and understanding. He worked with our schedule and met our needs. Whether it was timing or a money factor he was able to make it happen. We showed Jim numerous home improvement projects and he assisted us in establishing a timeline, cost and level of importunacy. He isn’t there to just get the job done. He utilizes his infinite experience, coupled with his heart. The work he does is honest and meaningful. He is the first to recommended something, fully explain the project and do what is right! The 300+ sqft of real travertine stone (delicate, thick, large and heavy), installed on an intricate diagonal layout by Jim cannot be explained. He did such a beautiful job! I wish we would have known him when we had other kitchen and bath tile installed. His communication and workmanship sets him apart from anyone you have ever worked with! We looked forward to having Jim back after he completes another clients job for painting and interior trim work, each in which he has evidenced to us his amazing carpentry abilities.

My husband and I used Lisa Demberg of Style Reboot to redecorate a 2 year old home we purchased. Although the house was basically brand new, much of the interior, including yellow walls throughout the house, were not our style. Lisa has a talent for assisting her clients with choosing color palettes, using their existing home furnishings, and finding a few new purchases to tie the whole look together. Lisa is also well connected to other interior design specialists within our community and she coordinated a kitchen cabinet redesign for us with a local woodworker whom we would never have discovered without her help. Lisa outlined a design plan and a timeline to prioritize projects and stayed within or under budget for all of our design needs. We highly recommend Style Reboot for any of your decorating needs - no project is too big or too small for Lisa to tackle!

I hit the jackpot finding Maurice! I bought a townhouse that needed some renovating. My original plan was to remove popcorn ceiling, remove wall paper, paint, remove tile floor and lay carpet, upgrade tiled fireplace and tiled window seat. I knew I would need to coordinate the different jobs, while sticking to a tight timeline of one month. I happened upon Superior Floors while looking for someone to remove tile. During our first phone call, I explained my plan and found out he could do all of my projects. I was ecstatic!! From the moment I met him, I could tell he was passionate and very knowledgeable about his job. He noticed the mismatched texture on the walls (two other painters didn't notice), gave suggestions, and was very creative in designing the fireplace. I added a few things to the project (install/wire ceiling fans, new flooring in the bathroom, upgrade interior doors) when we met and was assured they would be done in time. After they started working and I saw progress, I became excited and asked about doing a few other things that I had planned for the future during this renovation (new bathroom cabinets for both bathrooms, new countertops, new lighting fixtures, and granite countertops for the bathroom and kitchen). Though I knew I was adding more work and possibly delaying my timeline, he accepted the challenge. Maurice kept in constant contact throughout the entire project. He kept me within budget and he maintained my one month timeline, even with the added projects!! I was very lucky everything was delivered on time or early. The finished project is amazing and I love my "new" place! I have already had him back to make my laundry space more functional. He did a great job with this too! I will be hiring him again to retile the master shower and guest bath. He is personable, professional, and thorough. He does a fantastic job and does it right the first time, he does not cut corners. I really liked his excitement and design ideas throughout the project. I highly recommend Maurice with Superior Floors! It was my first experience with a contractor, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

First and foremost I think the staging process for the homeowner can be hard. Being as open as possible and trusting the professional is necessary while at the same time letting go of how you want your house to look and feel. Understanding that staging is done more for the Buyer and to make the space looks good. It is much different than how one would decorate to live and function in the space. With that being said I would like to thank and commend the job that eMarie Design did at my house. Eva took the extra time to make sure I was happy, as well as my agent feel involved in the staging process. From start to finish her instincts, level of communication, attention to detail, and follow-up after the staging is complete was second to none. Eva does a great job in taking the time to learn about both the Seller as well as the property, and their customized presentation and portfolio of ideas for each home is a great way to put their personal touch on every project they are a part of. Aesthetically she really made sure that the interior design and organization complimented and enriched each space, instead of overwhelming and trying to become the focal point of the room. Eva also took the time to incorporate my own items so I would feel comfortable living in my house while it was listed. I would proudly recommend her staging services to any potential seller looking to help add that extra level of quality, substance, and service to their home. Eva easily helped to add 10K to my offer. I sold my house for 17K over asking price with some issues that need to be dealt with on the property.

She is great with keeping the integrity of one's individual style while making the project timeless and fresh. We highly recommend Patra for all interior design needs. After recently moving into a new home, I hired Kathy for living room design and for a paint color consult. Kathy is amazing. She is very warm and personable, and she took the time to get to know me and understand my style. I was new to the area, and Kathy drove me to several design centers to shop for furnishings. She had creative ideas to make my living area functional and comfortable. I am so happy I used Kathy’s services and I highly recommend her.

Wendy designed my master bath remodeling, a complete gutting and remodel. She gave great practical, creative advice and kept me apprised of current trends. She provided plans of my ideas so I could see the use of space, and recommended more efficient uses of space and details of design details. Then she provided both my contractor and me with the plans. She interacted with my contractor to communicate specific details. My bathroom is very practical and beautiful. It is very easy to change out accessories and create a whole new color scheme and look. The job took several months to complete. This length of time was perfectly acceptable. The quality of her work is superb. Wendy is also extremely easy to work with.

Lee and team came out to replace a interior door, repair an exterior door, install a stove vent where a built in microwave was and repair a plumbing problem with the washing machine hot water connection. Lee arrived early to asses the problems and he discovered the hot water connection problem while walking my home. Cost of repairs were reasonable and service was great. I have put him in my toolbox to call when I have additional repairs

Joyce helped us remodel our living room, powder room and den/living room on the first floor of our house. Planning and hiring a contractor took two months and the work itself took approximately three months. Among her many talents, Joyce brought two invaluable skills to the project. First, she successfully blended our tastes with her impeccable eye for design. She designed a bookshelf and a pocket door with with leaded glass for us that are works of art. Second, she kept us and our contractor focused and on task. She inspected the remodeling work and caught many punchlist items that I never would have noticed. It was great having her involved to work with our contractor. I would recommend Joyce and Daydream Incorporated to anyone.

About

Every single designer stands out as we are all unique and talented. We each have our own experiences to give to a space. However, knowing who I am and where I have been in my experiences, I know that I will work diligently to maintain professional practices, listen to what the client is asking for, while also adding a splash of whimsy to my designs when opportunity strikes! Western Feng Shui practices have really set me aside as a counselor and co-creator of living and working spaces. Rather than just the aesthetics, my clients will end up with a supportive reflection of themselves and their goals in their spacial environment. It's all connected.

About

My experience in interior decorating taught me that both looks and functionality are equally important, and I will stick with this philosophy no matter what. I learned that one can arrange a beautiful house even when budgets are not unlimited, and every house can be made into a home for somebody!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
