I hired Pour la France for catering services for my daughter's sweet 16th Birthday event and I'm proud to say things went very well. A few things to call out about Pour la France are: 1) Customer Service: I worked with BoJames (Bo) on menu options for this event and Bo was extremely helpful and delivered excellent customer service throughout the process. I was provided with a couple of menu's to choose from and what I liked most was that the menu's provided allowed for me to be flexible with my options. 2) Food delivery: The food ordered was delivered on time (despite the snow) and at the end of the night, the Pour la France crew arrived on-time to pick up the items they delivered. This was a big deal for me as I needed the venue cleaned by the end of the night and having the team be there on time to help with clean up was a big help. 3) Food Quality: Each of the items I ordered tasted great and came with great quality! 4) Food Quantity/Portion Sizes: This category is the only reason I'm giving Pour la France a 4 instead of 5 star rating. Although I worked with Bo on my menu options, I did expect the portion sizes to be a little more robust than what they were. However, I only ordered from the Appetizer and HD menu's so part of the blame is on me for not fully asking the question of whether or not the food I ordered would be enough for a room size of 50 - 60 people. All-in-all I would recommend Pour la France's services and I will likely use them again for future events.

Myself & all my guests were extremely impressed with the service & excellent food. Everything fresh & made on site. Thomas & his assistant were great to work with, & Thomas was so good at replying to email queries & last minute changes leading up to the event. I would recommend 'Yok' (Your own kitchen) in a heartbeat. Looks like some of my guests look forward to using him in the future as well. He also left the place perfectly clean, you wouldn't have known he had been there, except for the satisfied & fully stomachs. Thank you so much Thomas, the event was GREAT.

We hired Plumb Creek to cater our wedding over Labor Day Weekend and they were perfect! Allison is so nice and is really easy to work with, she even met us on a weekend to do our taste testing. Our menu was custom made to work with our budget and the types of food we like. The staff and the service were very professional. The whole Plumb Creek team made our wedding go smoothly and, most importantly, the food was amazing! They even had hors d'oeuvres waiting for us as we got done with pictures so that we could eat a little before the reception. All of our guests have been raving about how great everything tasted. We will be recommending them to everyone!

Everything was amazing!! Dustin accommodated our group of 8 foodies! He even prepared a separate menu for my cousin who is Vegan. The food was incredible, the service was perfect, and there was absolutely nothing for us to do but enjoy. The kitchen was spotless when they left and we were all fat and happy. I will definitely be using Dustin again in the future and will recommend him to EVERYONE!!!

Lisa showed up on time and set up an appealing display of delicious food. There were about 100 people at the event and a number of them commented on how great the food was. She returned on time to clean up. She was very easy to work with and was responsive to my questions and concerns. I would definitely recommend her catering services to others

Barb did an amazing job catering our event and the food was phenomenal. Her attention to detail and creativity was greatly appreciated. The t-bone steaks she grilled were prepared to perfection. Even the strawberries she brought (as part of our fruit/cheese appetizer platter) were delicious and picture perfect (like strawberries you see in a television commercial). The grilled vegetable skewers and organic chicken breasts were perfect. Thank you, Barb, for the amazing experience. Our night was fantastic.

I enjoyed working with this catering company! The food was pretty good and the catering delivery had the challenge of getting the food out & presentable very quietly, which went well. I had to take a star off because the chicken was undercooked on the two meals set aside for our folks with dietary restrictions and delivery on the second day was about 20 minutes late. Overall, the experience was good and I will keep them in the list of caterers for future events.

I attended both a bridal shower and wedding catered by Knife and Pepper. The displays were beautifully done, the food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. There was a wide variety of food within the themes of each event and all dietary needs were met (gluten free, dairy free, etc.). From the appetizers to the desserts, everything was done with care and detail and the flavors were spot on. I highly recommend Knife and Pepper for any event!

We're a pretty laid back firm. J Street took their time and laid out the food, which was perfect, as the party progressed. No hurry, so everyone ate what they wanted, when they wanted. It was perfect. And everyone enjoyed ordering their personal dinner from the food truck. It was the perfect way to do a private catering event, with food that we couldn't get anywhere else.

We used Orange Crunch to cater our wedding rehearsal. The food was delicious! We should have booked them for our actual wedding day. Leshner was able to customize our menu toward more traditional Filipino with a bit of fusion. They were also able to provide us with ube cupcakes. The cupcakes were a hit! It is great to see more of a Philippine cuisine presence in Colorado. Orange Crunch exceeds expectations for quality, quantity, and service. We have become regulars at their food truck and will use their catering service again. Give them a try, you will not be disappointed. I would add a photo but we ate all of the food before I could get one :).

Carter's Creative Catering provided delicious food for a recent high school reunion I hosted in Fort Collins. Holly was extremely helpful and easy to work with. They delivered the food right on time and displayed it beautifully, plus they picked up early the next morning and made the entire process so easy and smooth. Most importantly- the food was a huge hit!

Lyndsey was super helpful in helping me to plan an engagement party for my sister. I told her the general theme (Spain/ tapas), and she took it from there! Everyone was raving about the food- both the savory and sweet dishes were awesome. She was very flexible with my budget and patient with my timeline. Thank you for everything!

Troy and crew did an excellent job with the party I had him cater! All of the food offerings were bright, fresh, and tasty. The staff was courteous, clean, and prepared. The presentations were wonderful and artistic...I would happily, and confidently, rehire them to do another catering event for me. Very professional, and attentive to special needs and details. Bravo!

The food and service from Savor was amazing! Their team was extremely accommodating to certain dietary restrictions we had discussed. We paid a little bit extra, but it was well worth it. For anyone looking for catering services, Savor is perfect. They are professional, friendly, accommodating and the food is spectacular!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
