Nicole is great! She only had 6 lessons to work with my daughter before her Act test and of course with the hard work of the student to study what they have learned from the teacher you'll get results like my daughter did. Her score went up 3 points within that short amount of time that we can schedule Nicole in. I really recommend Nicole😊. Thanks again Nicole for everything! Jackie C.

Don and I worked together in The Mayan School for about 4 years. During this time I was able to see how passionate and dedicated he was to teaching. He went beyond his duties to ensure an excellent education for his students. Being bilingual gives him the advantage to help spanish native speakers in learning English.

Donna is great, very knowledgeable and easy to work with. She is excellent at working with adult students: I needed help preparing for a college placement test after taking time off from school and she was very easy to talk to and good at explaining things simply but without talking down or telling me things I already knew. Great experience, would recommend Donna to anyone!

A brilliant tutor and writer, she really inspired me to write stories and I have now published one and working on a second. Even better the lessons are really fun. You (or your child) can become a good author in so short a time I would not think is possible. Ben Crossley, aged 12

Gary is a terrific teacher! He's been tutoring my son for a few months now, via audio + whiteboard over Skype. He's a great communicator, they have a great rapport, and my son is very enthusiastic about the lessons and the ground they are covering (they are moving very quickly). My son has long had an affection for math, just not a love for school -- and Gary has helped to recapture his love for numbers, algebra and figuring out problems. I would recommend Gary without reservation.

I appreciate Ann as an online tutor. Ann is a certified Reading Interventionist with a big heart for helping kids succeed in the area of reading. I met Ann through a group I created called The Ultimate Support Group for Online Tutors. She is always willing to help others, be of service, speak at conferences, and share her knowledge. I have had the opportunity to watch Ann teach lessons to kids through videos she has submitted to me, and I was impressed with how well she connected with her students and how effective she was as a tutor. You would have to be crazy not to hire Ann.

Nathan is incredibly patient and diligent in his tutoring. He tutored my daughter in 10th grade geometry and consistently went above and beyond to make sure she fully understood the concepts. He maintains a very open environment, my daughter felt comfortable asking him questions. I would highly recommend Nathan to teach any student, as he will alter his tutoring to accommodate any learning style.

Chris has been tutoring my son (a high school junior) for about a year on some very challenging, upper level math, and the results have been incredible. My son went from a failing grade to a B in one semester, and he also received an A in his physics class. Chris quickly built a trusting relationship with my son through his timeliness and professionalism, quickly developing what has been a great experience!

We are pleased to provide a reference for Colleen Urban. Colleen tutored our daughter, Julia, at Basic Skills Tutoring in Seattle while Julia was in middle school and high school at The Northwest School (2006-2011). Colleen began as a math tutor but her role expanded, to providing help in organization, study skills, time management, and test preparation. Julia benefitted enormously from the assistance and counsel that Colleen provided. She helped Julia tackle algebra, geometry and calculus, as well as preparing for physics, chemistry, and biology exams. Colleen was always patient but firm with Julia. Their relationship was close and friendly. Julia never complained about going to tutoring and looked forward to her time with Colleen. As well as attending a challenging college prep school, Julia was a serious ballet dancer. Her after-school hours were often taken up with classes and rehearsals. Colleen was very flexible—always finding some time for Julia, even if it meant staying late—when she needed it. Colleen made a lasting impact on Julia’s life and academic career. Julia graduated from Bennington College, with a 3.8 GPA in 2015. She was extraordinarily successful in college and has made a great transition to life after college. Last year, she taught in a French high school. This year she is writing poetry as well as working full-time as she prepares to apply to graduate school. She tackles difficult projects with discipline and enthusiasm. She has the confidence to work independently and the patience to deal with the inevitable frustration that results from challenging herself. These were qualities that Colleen saw in Julia and worked hard to bring to the forefront. For this assistance and support, we continue to be very grateful to Colleen.

High school juniors have challenges in general. Watching my daughter's grit to maintain honor roll, raise College entrance scores while math teachers apathetically ignore or push back on her efforts is unacceptable and beyond frustrating. Grace Peil has proven invaluable and the results show. Since tutoring began my daughter has a clearer understanding of concepts, test taking, maintains an A in math and has increased her comprehensive entrance score by 3 points. More than that, Grace is kind and extraordinarily motivating, balancing student accountability with enthusiastic encouragement and an unyielding commitment to lobbying for fair treatment by teachers. I would highly recommend Student Society to any student in need.

I most definitely recommend Allison as a Physics tutor, and I plan on continuing to utilize her for tutoring throughout this summer 1 session at college and again next summer for Physics 2. Sarah

Shivani was an excellent tutor for my son who is in 11th grade and has always struggled with math. She was always prompt and patient and really helped him to comprehend the math on which they were working. He has a good grade in math and will move on to a higher level for his senior year. I would highly recommend Shivani and hope to utilize her skills for the coming school year.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
      • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
