Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a good carpenter in Denver?

Start by searching online for highly rated carpenters in Denver. Narrow your search by looking for a cabinet maker, framing contractor, trim or finish carpenter, depending on the type of project you’re completing. For large, structural projects, you might want to look for a general contractor who can supervise.

Before you hire, check the carpenter’s online profile for customer reviews and examples of their past work. Don’t be afraid to contact them and ask detailed questions about their process, timeline, payments and anything else that's pertinent to your project.

Lastly, get free cost estimates from at least three carpenters so you can compare prices before making a decision.

How do I hire the best deck contractor in Denver?

You’ll find a list of Denver’s best deck contractors by conducting an online search. To start, compare profiles and ratings of different pros near you. Identify the contractors who have high ratings and have been hired numerous times.

Then, click through to view the pros' profiles. Read through the customer reviews carefully, and try to get a feel for the contractors’ craftsmanship when building, repairing, sealing and staining decks for Denver residents. You should also find out if the deck contractors tend to show up on time, finish their projects on schedule, exhibit professionalism and offer fair pricing. And lastly, look for customers’ before-and-after photos of their decks so you can see examples of the contractors' finished work.

You should also research the contractor’s credentials. You may be able to find out if they’re licensed by visiting their online profiles, but you can also try searching online. For example, Denver's Department of Community Planning and Development website allows you to verify a contractor’s license.

Finally, gather quotes and estimates from several deck contractors so you can compare pricing. The best contractor to hire for your deck project should have experience working on Denver homes, the necessary skills, positive reviews and competitive pricing.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Jeff (Owner) and Jeremy (Builder) did a great job on our deck project. We were able to repair and save 300 sqft of existing deck that had fallen into disrepair. Additionally, the team built a beautiful extension and new encompassing railing around the entire deck to wrap it as a cohesive unit. Aside from the work product, I really appreciated that both Jeff and Jeremy were personally considerate about the project and our design decisions. Rather than force an entire new deck, or push our budget to different areas, Jeff listened and considered our ideas and proposed a project scope that was within our budget and accomplished the design goal we wanted. Additionally, Jeremy and Jeff were both good at checking in with us during the project to see how we thought the work was going, give us input to little design decisions and tweaks (post height, rail routering, railing style..) and make sure that their work was always aligned with our vision. The work hasn't been completed for long, but I feel that the workmanship on the deck is high quality and that we will love it for years to come. I would hire We Build It again for future projects.

Wonderful experience. Couldn't have done better. We needed a small wooden fence replaced and our deck refurbished. Peter, the owner, came to our house soon after we called, examined and measured the two jobs and then gave us an on-the-spot written estimate. We received several other estimates and Fence and Decks came came in with the lowest bid by several hundred dollars and included a check list and pricing for all materials, including replacement wood. Some of the firms we called for an estimate, came out, measured, and then never sent an estimate. One never even showed up for a scheduled appointment We scheduled start time for the work but Peter called that morning, apologized, and told us that the current job on which he was working turned out to take longer than he anticipated so he would like to start our job on the next day. OK with us. Peter showed up the next morning, started to work on the two jobs and was completed in less time than he or we anticipated. I was really surprised when, working alone, he completed our new fence the first day and then started on the deck. He did bring a crew member to assist him with some of the deck work. In the end, we have a wonderful new fence and a totally refurbished deck. After most of the deck work was completed, we decided we wanted to add a wooden handrail for some steps. Peter just added this task without a thought given to increasing the agreed-upon price. Nice touch. The job was well done. The price was right. His work was excellent. He cleaned everything up before leaving. Most importantly, he was a pleasure to work with. I wouldn't hesitate to not only use his services again but to highly recommend him to anyone considering fence or deck work.

My fiancé and I were very impressed with Western Sky Designs from start to finish! Brian was friendly, courteous and professional when he came out to give us a quote to build a deck off the back of our home. He collaborated with us to come up with a design that was both true to our vision and within our budget. Brad, the master carpenter, was fantastic and the final result was absolutely beautiful. They even came by a week later to clean up some pen marks on the stucco (with color matched paint, you can’t even tell) and to remove some of the serial numbers on the composite decking planks that were showing to make sure everything was in tip top shape. We are obsessed with our deck. Thank you so much Western Sky Designs!
