I got tutored in Algebra for about a week and he was very accommodating of the time and when I needed more or when I needed less he was very flexible. He's an excellent tutor, he won't cut corners and will make you actually think and solve the work instead of hustling you along to the next one. If you're looking for a math tutor then I don't know that you really could find one better.

Jan is not only a great math tutor but she's an excellent life coach that helped me realize my potential. I had a cumulative 2.5GPA at the end of my sophomore year of high school. Once I realized my potential (Aced my math classes) I boosted my Cumulative GPA to a 3.1 (approx 3.7)/semester and was admitted to my dream university.

We love working with Moises! After just two weeks of tutoring, my daughter said "Now I understand the mistakes I have been making in math and I also understand how to do it right next time. I am starting to like math." Moises knows how to teach so that the information goes from short term memory to long term memory. We also have my son taking guitar lessons with Moises. He loves it so much he has requested lessons twice a week. We feel fortunate to have found someone who can work effectively with a student with ADD and that is an overall great teacher and kind person.

Minnie is fantastic. I have struggling to overcome my math demons for years and my teaching certification test reminded me they are not dead and gone. Minnie has helped me gain confidence, focus and has a way of encouraging me that I wish I could have experienced earlier in my life, maybe the demons would have needed up being happy rainbows and unicorns. Thanks Minnie!

If you're looking for a good math tutor who is going to be able to explain things in a very basic level two people who do not understand math then Dan is your guy! I do not understand math at all whatsoever but Dan was able to break things down for me so I was able to understand it better.

High school juniors have challenges in general. Watching my daughter's grit to maintain honor roll, raise College entrance scores while math teachers apathetically ignore or push back on her efforts is unacceptable and beyond frustrating. Grace Peil has proven invaluable and the results show. Since tutoring began my daughter has a clearer understanding of concepts, test taking, maintains an A in math and has increased her comprehensive entrance score by 3 points. More than that, Grace is kind and extraordinarily motivating, balancing student accountability with enthusiastic encouragement and an unyielding commitment to lobbying for fair treatment by teachers. I would highly recommend Student Society to any student in need.

“I just wanted to let you know I finished with a 104% in math this semester and I’m graduating high school in two days! Thank you for literally everything you’ve done for me these past two years.” I wrote this right before I graduated high school. I am now a college freshman and just finished my first Calculus exam and received a 98%. Kelsey instilled onto me the love of math, the ability to not give up whenever the going gets tough, and to truly want to understand the material I am presented with. Anyone wondering if they should have Kelsey tutor them in anything, do it. He is a great person, fantastic teacher, and most of all, a friend. Best tutor I have ever had.

I’ve never been the best at math and throughout the years of knowing Jacob he’s helped me understand a lot of concepts and problems I’ve had trouble grasping. He doesn’t just do the problems for you, he actually sits down and goes over the problem and shows all the work required and explains why it is the way it is. He’s a very smart guy and I can honestly say I am better at math because of him.

I've worked three times with Stephenie and she is so patient. Also, she has been available in a pinch when I've needed her. She's made College Algebra a lot less intimidating and I am so grateful to have found her.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
      • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
