My wife had a large international conference in her field here in New York and we decide to invite some of her working colleagues for an evening with wine and some Hors D'Oeuvres. As our UWS apartment is rather small we actually needed to have 2 consecutive evenings with 10-12 guests and a catering for this. Marylyn was a delight to work with - very easy process to handle the various choices, 2 phone calls and few emails and all was set. Blythe and Lisa were absolute delights, they arrived punctually both nights and brought all needed things with them - including the nice variety of food menu items we had selected. They worked in the kitchen (some of the items were warm items) and made sure that we could focus on the guests (and wine pouring :). They also got special recognition from the highly international group of guests for their great preparation of food. I also appreciate the way all was cleaned afterward and the efficient way of collecting all the necessary things they brought, Being already tired late in the evening this is very much appreciated, Hint: The lamb and the zuccinis got special recognition (the latter including me :). Overall a very good experience. Thank you all!

If you are seeking a true PROFESSIONAL for your event, do not hesitate to hire Rich! 5 stars all the way for this awesome bartender! I hired Rich Stein for my wedding at the Carousel at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven. Approximately 100 guests and he handled them all with ease, demonstrating the professional he truly is! Totally focused, kept on top of everything! Prior to the event, he was very helpful in assisting me with liquor decisions, among other issues specific to this venue, and answered questions promptly and completely. I had certain liquors set aside for a few certain people, and that went smoothly. I felt totally stress-free knowing he was in charge of everything at the bar. I would not hesitate to hire Rich again, next time, perhaps a catering gig because I hear he is a great chef, as well! Thanks, Rich!

Amazing! Delicious! Accommodating! Thomas is fantastic to work with and the presentation of what he cooks is stunning. Thomas cooked for our family of 12 for an Anniversary dinner. I could not have been more delighted by everything about the dinner. Everything was delicious and beautifully prepared. Thomas and Ann ( his lovely wife) were great to work with and talk to and we will definitely use them again! I highly recommend Thomas for your catering needs. Thank you Thomas (and Ann) for a wonderful evening!

Mike, was an absolute pleasure to work with for the catering of our wedding. He was very flexible with meetings. He would meet with short-term notice. He went above and beyind his normal catering responsibilities. His quality of customer service was exceptional. His food was delicious. He prepares a mean tilapia! He was very generous throughout the process. He was very knowledgable and helpful when recommending other venders to use for our event. I look forward to recommending him to family and friend's and hope to work with him again in the future.

Chef catered a large family gathering (24 people with 6 kids) in a home we rented in the hamptons. He and his staff were amazing. They were professional, fun to work with, and easy to work with as well! The food was delicious. He even created a cocktail of "the day" that was a smashing success! (+ he brought a bartender to help) I originally went with Chef Plum because when I put the bid out for the event Chef had the most creative ideas for menu, drinks and was great to talk to on the phone. I knew from the start that he'd be easy to work with. From day 1 to the day of the event, he was amazing. Always responsive, helpful and took a ton off our "plate" as he helped organize rentals, glassware, and a lot of other details. This was an amazing event thanks to chef and his team. I highly recommend him!!

We had a wonderful experience with Anne and First Bite Catering. We held a wine tasting and spanish dinner party for 25 guests. Anne was extremely responsive and helpful during the planning process. She was open to handling many details over and above the food prep and presentation. That was very helpful. And the food was wonderful! My guests raved about it. She and her staff were punctual and professional on the night of the event and cleaned up everything so I could enjoy the party and guests. I highly recommend First Bite and I will definitely hire them again. Thanks Anne!

My pal and I hired Kendall and Gerry to cater our husbands' joint 50th birthday party in Bedford in 2008, to rave reviews from guests. They've since catered two graduation parties for me and another 50th for a friend. Such wonderful attention to detail, from designing signature cocktails to selecting a personalized menu with the freshest locally sourced food. They make sure that not only the guest of honor and guests had a good time, but the hosts as well. Most impressive to me--Kendall joined her staff in surprising our son at his ballgame themed graduation party wearing Yankees tees and caps--despite being Red Sox fans themselves. :-) Every event they've catered has been lovely from start to finish. I cannot recommend highly enough!

I am currently working with Susan who will be catering a dinner reception for my wedding this June. I was referred to Susan by a coworker who had previously work with her and raved about how great her food is. I am so happy to have found her, she is very responsive and willing to listen to my concerns. I highly recommend Susan!

I hired Good Food Catering for a shower in my home for approximately 25 people. I was offered a variety of appetizers and dinner items to choose from. The food was timely delivered, set up, served and cleared without interrupting the shower whatsoever. Most of all, the food was delicious! My guests really enjoyed the variety and there was plenty of food for seconds which many took advantage of. I was able to enjoy the shower and not worry about the food, serving or clean up!

Chef Gerry has been coming to our home once a week for over a year. He is incredibly talented (any sauce he makes is divine!) and very professional. He always makes sure everything is clean before he leaves. He's even very nice with my children and explains to them what he is doing so they are learning also. Highly recommended.

        About

Whether you're trying to plan a small party for your friends or getting a giant wedding in order, getting a good Connecticut catering company is one of the things that you cannot skip. Getting an outside Connecticut catering company to get the meals ready for you frees your mind and time and lets you focus on the other parts of the event. Getting a large event to flow smoothly can be impossible sometimes, but there are three basic elements to consider before you make a final decision. They are the following: * Cooking -- The food at the event will have a lot to do with your guests. For example, you wouldn't pick a five-star gourmet catering company to serve at a kid's birthday party. You have to consider the different palettes that your guests will have and keep in mind if they have any allergies or special tastes. * Safety -- Most Connecticut catering companies will be glad to give you a behind-the-scenes look at how they cook and prepare the food. The reason for this is that their goal is to make your guests happy, which means being careful to avoid any potential food pollutants. They need to keep everything nice and clean, so remember to ask for a tour. * Customer Service -- Making the food is just as important as their presentation and how they serve it. Look into a company for a while before hiring them. A good way to find a good catering service is to attend an event of some kind and pay attention to how the caterers there treat you -- experiencing the company's service first will be a surefire way to hire the right caterers.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

        • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
        • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
        • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
        • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
        • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
        • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

        • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
        • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
        • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
        • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

        • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
        • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
        • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
        • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
        • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
