I first hired Marvin to paint and frame 44 newly installed wooden windows in my historic row home. Because I was so impressed with his professionalism and superb quality of work, I contracted him for additional services including porcelain tile installation, surfacing and reframing a roof deck, and completing the finishes of a previous contractor. If you want to hire a competent company that takes price in their work and delivers high quality services, Baiza Construction Inc. should be your choice.

I needed masonry repair work done around our early 19th century farmhouse. Josh got back to me right away, and Chris, the mason brother, came out to view the job a couple of days later. He gave a thorough explanation of what he planned to do, and a price that evening. He came to do the work the following Saturday with an assistant, worked a long day, and got the job done that day. He also included some work that was not in the original proposal at no cost. He was thorough, professional and easy to work with. I will hire him again for any masonry work we have. Joshua, Chris' brother also came by one evening with the formal contract. He is the carpentry side of the partnership. Although I did not require his services at the time, I will also look to him for any carpentry work I need. Both brothers appear to be honest and very capable. They get my highest marks!

M Concrete did a concrete patio job for our house. Existing patio was to be removed and a new concrete patio of double the size was to be installed. Mauricio was very professional in providing options and making a recommendation that met our needs. His crew arrived on time and cleaned the site after finishing the job. M Concrete is extremely competitive in pricing and offers quality services at a very reasonable cost!

After a separate company provided plumbing services, we had a lovely gaping hole in the drywall. We looked at the hole and figured why not get a quote for additional work we needed done to our home. We pointed out a few holes in the wall and needed a door replaced so why not get a comprehensive quote / estimate. We decided to go to Thumbtack, Odd Jobs responded first and we commenced the process. Odd Jobs consistently communicated with us, worked with us to solidify an accurate estimate and explained the work, were flexible to schedule the work and explained what resources and materials would be necessary to complete the job. They arrived on time to perform the work. They had the right tools and materials and did an exceptional job from start to end. They cleaned up afterwards and were professional throughout the experience. The quality alone will compel us to call Odd Jobs when we need folks that understand their business and respect their customers. Thanks Curtis

Josue was available right away to do the estimate on a small deck repair. He came out in the rain (as opposed to other contractors who told me to call back when weather was better) and later followed up promptly with the estimate. The job was done within the next 2-3 days. I highly recommend AB SOLUTION HOME SERVICES. The work quality was very good...I will use again.

The workers arrived approximately on time (and given the traffic, approximate is good!), and did very good work in a cooperative, respectful way. The repair work done on my deck was of good quality and was quite reasonably priced.

Julio was fantastic! I bought an old house with a structural beam issue. I was looking for someone to give me a straight answer on what needed to be done. Julio explained every step to me and why he proposing to do the work that way. He gave me hands down the best estimate, in price and detail of work. Julio started work exactly when he told me he would, sent me pictures and texts throughout the process, and finished ahead of schedule. He went above and beyond by adding some hardware that he felt was needed for structural reasons, but stuck to his original price estimate. I plan to call Julio for other construction needs I have. He's a great guy, will be real with you, show up on time, and do great work for a great price!

Bottom line: Our roof looks great. It took a bit of work to get there... but thankfully the crew was willing to put in the time and effort to make it right. We don't like having to be roof inspectors when we hire a professional roof installer, but it is what it is. Workers were respectful and kind. However, they were a bit messy.... we picked up a bunch of nails, shingle pieces, plastic wrappers, etc.... BHS was not the cheapest or the most expensive. He was right down the middle. Mr. Cox was responsive to all our concerns and replied or called in a timely manner. Will post pictures soon.

The lead representative for the company, Eduardo, was very willing to listen to my ideas and to suggest good solutions; it was easy to discuss the work with him. The workers arrived early and worked a full day, sometimes staying late to complete what they were doing. They always cleaned up the work area at the end of the day. They were always polite. The quality of the work is excellent. The work space they had for building the flagstone walkway was quite slanted & not very wide. They did a lot of difficult digging & dirt removal by hand during hot weather. They took care to measure and to check whether or not an area was level. The foundation of the walkway is very firm. The workers who cut & placed the stone were very skilled. I am very pleased with the job they did. I can highly recommend their services and would use them again.

We hired Budget Landscaping to do property cleanup, weeding, lay new mulch, mulching dead leaves, trimming, mowing, deep edging and cutting back some very tall trees, and hauling away the cut and dead branches. I could not be more pleased for three important reasons: 1) Owner, Nelson Morales, came out on the evening of the very day we spoke to assess and provide his affordable estimate, 2) He arranged to come on a Sunday! to get the job done, and 3) Nelson and his crew did an outstanding job. I couldn't be more pleased - and relieved. Budget Landscaping will be doing our maintenance now. So highest kudos to Nelson and crew with my sincere thanks and appreciation for a job well done!

I have called on Brad to handle many personal plumbing, heating, and renovation issues both interior and exterior. But until I had my organization contract him to resolve some weatherization issues for our contractors, I had no idea of the professional caliber of his work. He is a venerable engineering and construction knowledge base, and his hands on work is skillful, concise, and clean.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
