Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a plumber during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If possible, it’s best to set up a virtual consultation or phone call with a plumber near during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can send a message to a professional plumber near you and ask if they are available to video chat or have a phone call. Use that time to discuss the work that needs to be done. Make sure to ask any questions you have about the project. And lastly, ask the plumber how they handle payments and whether they have any specific safety precautions in place to comply with social distancing.

How can I find out if a plumber is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Generally, plumbers are often considered essential service providers. Essential service providers vary from state to state and city to city, however. For the most accurate information, check your official state or city government website to see whether a plumber is considered an essential service in your area.

Read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a plumber when social distancing?

Contact plumbers near you beforehand to see if they can complete the project without entering your home — for example, by entering the garage to fix a broken water heater. If the plumber needs to enter your house to do the job, you should proceed only if both parties feel comfortable with the project. Consider taking extra steps such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing common areas.

Does a plumber need to enter my home?

A plumber will need to enter your home to fix plumbing issues like dripping faucets, clogged sinks or toilets and leaky pipes. They might not need to come into your home if the faulty appliance is located outdoors or in the garage. Before you begin the project, contact plumbers near you to find out they will need to enter your home.

Can I use digital payments to pay for plumbing services?

Some plumbers accept digital payments -- Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, etc. -- for their services. Before you hire a plumber, ask them if they accept your preferred online payment. Many also feature digital payment options on their profiles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, digital payments are typically considered safer than cash and credit cards.

Do plumbers offer remote or virtual services?

If you see a profile that states the plumber is offering remote services, contact the plumber before hiring them to see what those services include. Although plumbing is a job that has to be done in-person, you can ask them if they offer virtual consultations or an online walk-through.

What do you do if you have a burst pipe?

First, switch off the water supply to reduce the water damage. You should also turn off the electricity for the part of your home that has sustained the leak, as it can be extremely dangerous if the water comes into contact with an electrical socket. Next, drain the remaining water from your faucets so it doesn’t freeze inside the pipes.

Once you’ve done all of this, search for qualified plumbers in your area and ask them to provide you with a quote.

What happens when a water pipe bursts?

When a pipe bursts, the water can cause indoor flooding and damage your home. If the pipe is in an accessible location, you will likely notice puddles of water right away. However, if the pipe is underground or behind a wall, it may cause reduced water pressure, a sulfur smell or discolored water. All of this can cause significant (and expensive) damage, which is why you should always contact a plumber near you if you suspect your pipes are leaking.

Can a leaking pipe burst?

Yes. A leak in your pipe can build up pressure and wear through the material. Left unchecked, this pressure can cause the pipe to burst. This is why it’s so important to fix your pipes and contact a plumber as soon as you notice a leak — no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.

Smaller leaks are easier and inexpensive to fix, saving you time and money in the long run. In addition, many insurance policies will not cover water damage for pipes that burst due to gradual leaks.

What are the signs of a burst pipe?

If your water pressure has suddenly dropped or your sink and toilet have unexpectedly started clogging, you may have a burst pipe. Other tell-tale signs include watermarks on the wall of your bathroom or laundry room, drips or puddles in your home or basement, or water from your faucets that have suddenly turned brown. You may also notice a strange rotten-egg smell or the sound of gurgling water in your home.

If you notice any of these signs, contact a plumber near you to fix your pipes immediately.

Plumbing job installing two laundry faucets. They gave a quick response to my inquiry for services and quickly set up an appointment that was good for both of us. Looked over the job more closely when they got here and dove right in. Great job. Personable people. No jerking around. They didn't waste time. And they left the area looking as good as or better than when they got there. I will certainly hire again.

Wow, this will be the easiest review I've ever posted. Ronnie was on-time, professional and true to his word. His work was thorough and accurate. Our situation involved major clogs to our water plumbing system. Ronnie was able to clear the pipes and replaced several faucets that had been damaged by the sand in our waterlines. His price was more than fair and we appreciate his efforts and workmanship. Thank you Alina Group and Ronnie,

I can't recommend EEE Plumbing and Drain Cleaning highly enough. I contracted them to repair the innards of my toilet, update the shut-off valves and install new bathroom fittings, including a new washbasin and vanity unit. The quality of their work was great. The attention to the details of what was required, without up-selling was appreciated. Their cost was an honest reflection of the work that was required. Based, on my experience, I will most certainly be recommending them to friends in need of the services they provide.

Sam replied right away to my inquiry for services & was able to set an appointment time for the very next morning. He was on time (even a few minutes ahead of schedule! :) ), very polite (even considering covid 19, protocols were followed) & extremely professional. He came for a slow bathroom drain & ended up replacing our old pipes under the sink, all within an efficient amount of time! Would highly recommended & will use for any future plumbing needs!

1st they were able to come out immediately and fix my issue. 2nd the tech was super friendly. Now the reason for the 1 star review. I just needed to have an emergency shut off valve replaced.... they charged $350 bucks!! This is like a $10 part at Home Depot!!! Included in that $350 was a 1 year plumbing plan..$100 bucks (that they didn’t disclose until I fell out of my chair at that price!!). So the actual cost was $250. Because I’m in a situation and need to get that fixed right away... I agreed. Two other plumbers reached out to me and their cost was around $100 bucks. Integrity should NOT be part of their business name!! Also... be warned... they try to upsell you on everything!!! I won’t be using them in the future!

WOW! This company is on the ball. A great team of plumbing professionals, that actually guarantee their work. They call to confirm the appointment and call when someone is on the way. They are neat, tidy and courteous and have good people skills. I am thrilled by this company's great work ethics. They might be a bit pricey but, they are top notch and worth every penny. This is one company, I will refer often. Thinking we were near finished with our renovations, I was far from pleased when I stopped by there this morning. I turned on the kitchen light to find water seeping between the new laminate floor planks. Being physically disabled, I don't have the ability to crawl around looking for leaks. I called My Plumber and was told, they'd call as soon as a plumber was available. I was thrilled when the phone rang within the half hour but, wasn't nearly as excited as when Carl announced that there would be no charges. It was a leaky water purifier that I had purchased and they had installed. I ran, bought a new one and the replaced it. Their customer service is top notch, I am blown away. Thank you My Plumber, it is most appreciated as I seem to be nickled and dimed to death right now.
