Responded very quickly. Tee did a great job carrying and hauling away very heavy concrete blocks left from dismantling a structure. I highly recommend him for any handyman jobs.

First of all, Carl arrived well within our appointed time frame. He surveyed the job, made his plan of attack and set about completing the task. He finished in no time at all and you could tell it was done by a pro. I have a number of "handyman" tasks to have done and now that I've found an accomplished pro, I'm making my todo list today.

This is a great guy. I wish Thumbtack really had more " professionals" like him. Not just some guy who lost his job figured out how to use a square and calls himself a handyman.

I had them replace two hose faucets outside, relocating one of them and replace my old 3-handle shower valve with a single handle. The work was done correctly, to quote (which was really competitively priced) and on time. Bill and Roxanne were sure to clean up and explain everything that they did. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again for any of my maintance or plumbing needs!

Had an appointment for 1:30 pm, at 2:00 pm, nobody showed up. I called and the customer service lady said she would inquire and call me back. She called me back and told me that the handyman had an urgent job and could not come, so we had to reschedule. Obviously the next day was not available, so she only had the next Monday. I told her not to bother. The lady was always responsive and courteous. The operations teams didn't seem to care a bit.

Paul is great. I wish the app would have allowed me to select all five attributes as best—professionalism, value, work quality, responsiveness, and punctuality. He responded to our request very quickly. He had great communication prior to and during our jobs. Appreciate his workmanship and attention to detail. He’s been out twice already and scheduled to come out at least one more time. If you are looking for handyman services, you will not be disappointed in Paul’s work. I would highly recommend him. So far he’s installed 4 ceiling fans, 3 faucets, a shower stall light/fan combo; and my list goes on. 😁👍

Jay replaced and moved our circuit breaker box to make it code compliant. He also installed recessed canned lighting and ensured that all switches in the house worked and were up to date. He was professional at every step of the way and extremely easy to work with. I would recommend him to anyone looking for an electrician and will likely use him again.

My wife and I couldn't have been happier by hiring Lou! He did a great job for us and took care of our plunging issue right away. We even talked to him about doing future projects for us after the Holidays. For anyone that is looking for a Handyman who is on time and is very professional with a nice personality he is your man. But you can only use him after we are done using him. Wayne and Bonnie Daytona Beach FL.

Dale took on a very challenging bathroom renovation (which is an understatement) for us in our 65 year old home. This job required expert plumbing, electrical, and carpentry skills as well as the ability to lay tile and install flooring. Dale is professional, reliable, punctual, honest, energetic, conscientious, and extremely hard-working. He likes to make sure a job is done the right way, and he attempts to complete tasks in a cost effective manner. I heartily recommend Dale for your handyman needs!!

Vincent painted my old (1925) home and garage as well as fixing several rotten spots and replacing broken windows. He also refinished my deck and capped my chimney. More than a painter, he is also a handyman and now a friend. I highly recommend him.

Larry did about 10 jobs for me around my new apartment. All went well. He arrives on time, works very neatly. Will hire him to help hang all the art and many other jobs as they pop up while I'm living here. He loves tackling new projects and does the research on how to do them well (if he needs to). His prices are reasonable. Great attitude toward the work. Easy to get along with. Communicates clearly about the jobs and what needs to be done. Brings everything he needs for the work. He is a 5 star handyman.

I came across Mike on thumbtack and read the positive reviews. I contacted Mike to do some handyman work at my house (replace gutters, paint house and replace interior borders). Mike was on time, reasonably priced and very neat work. I will be contacting him again for more work. Thank you Mike for a job well done. It's hard to find trustworthy efficient people.

Luis was very professional. He came with a free estimate to my house. We thought it was the most affordable out of all the ones we had gotten. So we went with him, he was very punctual when it came time to do the job. I had a couple of jobs that needed done. I had a hole in the ceiling from the hurricane, gutters were falling off, my back yard screen was ripped, and a door from was rotting. He was able to do all those jobs very fast. I give luis and his company 👍👍 way up. He is my personal handyman, or maintenance provider.(like he likes to call it)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
