Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a wedding officiant during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The safest way to conduct a consultation during COVID-19 is virtually. Ask wedding officiants near you if they can have a phone call or a virtual appointment over video chat. If they can, make sure to ask them any questions you have about upcoming work. Discuss what precautions, if any, they have in place to ensure safety. You might consider asking if they accept digital payments or if they can complete the work remotely, without any in-person contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

Do wedding officiants offer remote or virtual services?

Reach out to wedding officiants in your area, and ask them if they can offer a remote or virtual ceremony. Some officiants may be willing to meet in person while maintaining 6 feet of distance, while others may prefer to conduct the entire service over the phone or a video call service such as Skype or Zoom.

Familiarize yourself with the social distancing rules in your community, city and state, and move forward only if both you and the officiant are comfortable with the arrangement.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much are wedding DJs?

Hiring a DJ typically costs anywhere from $300 to $1,200. It all depends on how long they’ll be working at your wedding and other various factors. The cost to hire a wedding DJ is usually higher than the cost to hire a DJ to play at a birthday party or similar event.

To find out exactly how much your wedding DJ will cost, ask for a cost estimate from several professionals in your area.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

We appreciate DJ John and his services for our wedding on 10/14/17. The DJ can definitely make or break your ceremony/reception and in the case, he made it! He was very responsive and easy to communicate with when it came down to creating a song list and was even open to allowing us to change and update songs after we submitted a list. He followed our instructions precisely on the style and type of music we preferred and his services very affordable when compared to other DJ’s for the same amount of time the services are rendered. Besides his punctuality and responsiveness what really stood out was his ability to adjust the music to the atmosphere of the event. All of our guest we pleased and enjoyed him as well.

We hired Michael Franks to officiate our sons wedding on June 20, 2015 at the Amelia Island Golf Club. From day one he was up front and very personable. We set up a time that the Bride and Groom could call Michael (since we live in a different city than he does), and talk to him regarding the vows and the wedding details. He provided everything we needed and took all the pressure off of us in regard to the vows and the ceremony for the Unity Candle. Any time we emailed him with a question he responded in a timely manner and was on time for the rehearsal not to mention he showed up early for the wedding just so there would be no problems or questions regarding his services. We found Michael to be an absolute asset to our family's special day. He really made everything go so much easier. Great job Michael, it really feels like we've known you all our lives! Thank you so much for helping us flow through a very exciting and stressful time in our lives!

We were seeking DJ services for our October 2014 wedding reception. After the initial phone interview, Joey made us feel at ease through his professionalism. Except for the traditional dances, we gave him free range during the reception, which in my opinion took the stress out of the day. The week prior was chaotic with final details of the wedding that I had forgotten to submit the changes to our itinerary, although it was not a big deal. Joey had an understanding of mine and my fiancé's personality as well as, our guests. He was ahead of schedule the day of event and stayed beyond most of our guests. Even after the last dance of the night was announce I asked him to play a two-step for my divorced parents to dance to. Joey did a spectacular job and was a pleasure to work with. I will be sending all future brides your way! Thank you!

I reached an agreement with Marcus Roberts Photography to shoot our wedding (surprise wedding, so time is tight) Dec 31, 2019 from 6pm to midnight. This agreement was for Marcus the Main photographer and an additional photographer/videographer Marcus’s words ”the second person is mainly videography the whole night”. The original videographer cancelled, and I was NOT notified, instead Marcus brought his wife to assist. She is not a trained wedding videographer. Marcus also took up 30 minutes of our secret photo shoot to set up lighting (taking couple photos before everyone arrived we agreed 6pm to 730pm was couples photos). Instead of showing up early/communicating beforehand this was going to take time… Also, his lights were cable powered. Marcus did not bring 2 power extension cords. The time I am supposed to be getting ready, I am running around looking for another power cord. I made very clear beforehand that I wanted to recreate my grandparents wedding photo. I sent him examples before hand as well as had the photo on site. (Please refer to attached photo). Marcus’s wife even reminded him several times throughout the night that I wanted all my dress in the pictures (I had a chapel train). He said, “yeah yeah I got it”. Obviously as seen in attached photos he did not. Marcus’s wife video recorded before the ceremony and the ceremony. Not filming anything afterwards(at least no videos I received). The agreement was from 6pm to midnight. Marcus states his wife left around 10:40pm, but I have no video proof after the ceremony ended, 945pmish (the latest) to state that she was there later. He even agreed that she left early. I reasonably asked Marcus Roberts Photography for a $400 refund on the $500 for the second person. I said I understand you had to hire a babysitter, so I don’t mind assisting in that, at least the ceremony was recorded. But after that you breeched the contract and did not stay and record as requested. NYE count-down was missed, the cake cutting was missed. All parts I now cannot get back from our special day. I also stated I did not get the ONE photo I asked for. He offered to come back and reshoot that for us, I explained that a bride is not a simple put on a dress and voila. He messed up the pictures and needed to also pay for the hair and makeup redo $180 total. He refused saying he was going above and beyond just to come back and reshoot a couple of photos. In total I was asking $580 refund out of the $1,700 paid. I asked a reasonable amount of money back to recreate my couple photos as he messed up, and then for the second personal, as she was not a wedding trained professional. I was happy with his action photos of the party, but nothing else. I have no acceptable family portraits and no “formal” couple portrait I can print and place on my walls, I asked 3 times to make sure he got all the faces and we offered to move the flowers hanging, Marcus stated “no no I got were good”. He refused and offered $400 then $450, but I had to sign a refund contract. I said please send over the contract for review (please review attached). He asked that I am not allowed to express “disparage” orally or via written media. If I was to spread bad word of mouth or leave a bad review I was to pay him $2,500 in damages. Also, if a friend whom I confided in b/c I was upset with his services was to post a bad review, I would owe him damages of $2,500. I politely asked him to remove this, as the refund was for breach of contract and misrepresentation of services and abilities provided. He has refused to remove this portion of the contract, so I have refused to sign it. https://www.facebook.com/MarcRobertsPhotograpghy/ Instagram : marcrobertsphotography https://www.thumbtack.com/fl/saint-johns/event-photographers/marc-roberts-photography/service/322463026677620746

Originally John was suppose to be our DJ, but unfortunately something came up and he referred us to Corey B. I was very optimistic about Corey B; sadly I was disappointed. Even though he was a nice guy, he wasn't a very good DJ. I gave him a long list of songs to play for dancing, and heard very few of the songs I wanted. On top of that he didn't take the wedding planners que's very well during the ceremony or the reception. Most upseting of all, John quoted me $300 for the full duration of my wedding and reception. He said he had given all my info to Corey B, so I was very surprised when Corey asked for another $100 to stay the last hour of the reception (while it was still going on by the way). Now, of course we paid because we were pretty much backed into a corner. But then I found out from my guests that after my husband and I left he didn't even stay the full rest of the hour he made us pay extra for. Several people said he began taking down his setup and didn't really put any effort into the music being played. My advice, if you choose this DJ service make sure you get John, and if he passes you off to Corey B, just cut your loses and try to find another DJ (and by loses I mean the non refundable down payment they make you pay upfront to reserve your date) Like I said, Corey B is a very nice person, but a lousy DJ
