Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Nick showed up promptly and got right down to work. He was very knowledgeable, worked efficiently, and tackled the faucet installation, disposal & drain installation, new dishwasher installation, and a water valve repair with lightning speed. He even made a Home Depot run, and was back with the parts quickly. We are so impressed with Nick’s work ethic and efficiency, that we hired him to tile our backsplash and he did it to perfection. In addition, he’s a nice guy, very personable, and charges a very fair price Nick’s work matches his company name — truly 5-star service! My husband and I highly recommend him for most any repair, installation or remodeling project!

I was absolutely lucky to have Marco’s help to fix my bathroom and remodel another room. He is professional, skilled, easy going, honest and very affordable. I had water leakage damage in my bathroom and another room in the house. Marco did a superb job in removing the old tiles and replacing it with new ones. He demolished the damaged drywalls and installed new ones. He polished, painted and cleaned, leaving the place sparkly and fresh. I will definitely ask for his help in the future and I’ve already recommended him to my friends and coworkers. Thanks Marco for your great job.

Karnel did a fabulous job with installing new tiles at my home. He has one of the best prices and also finished the job faster than any other contractor's estimate. He is very professional and has great work ethics. It's amazing that he never even takes a lunch break which I've never seen before with anyone else. He also helped with picking up materials with his truck which is another value add as otherwise we would have had to spend extra on the delivery. He also agreed to fix a couple of other things at a very reasonable price. Overall I was extremely pleased with both the quality and value I got and he is definitely the man for the job. Highly recommended!!

Nick is FANTASTIC! I’ve NEVER dealt with a more responsible, hard working and professional individual. I was remodeling a bathroom and Nick did the most amazing job. He did the demo installed the new tile and cleaned up everything. He cares about his work which is very rare now a days. There were no hidden or extra charges, he quoted the price and came in on budget. Even when I changed my design ideas in mid job it did not throw him or cause him any concern. He just adjusted and even suggested a better way then I had proposed. I have several more jobs coming up and Nick will get them all !!! My wife is very happy with her new bathroom and that was the most important part of the job. Thanks Nick

Started the job 2 days late but didn't tell me he wasn't not coming till day of at 815am not professional. When he showed up wanted to move a wire in the wall and hide the junction box in the wall this is not to code period. I called an eletrician. Than Duque leaves job with one person here to do sheetroock etc they did good job. We were suppose to get tub in ,hardie board up and red guard in first day but because he left we other worker not much done. When asked Duque about the alcove tub he says puts hardie board first than tub which is incorrect, the hardie board goes over the lip of tub and tile to it. After he comes back after being gone for 4 hours forgot his chipper so no tub or shower pan install which was for the best. Called plumber who did the rough in valves to install the tub right away he said shower pan membrane goes behind hardie board.Told Duque to show at 1130am after plumbers were done. He showed at 1115am plumber said hardie borad installed wrong and explain to him how to do it right. Duque gathered up his stuff and said good luck. He did give me back my check, first and only check so that was a nice surprise. Very good business ethics 5 stars but skill set 1 STAR.. Overall a waste of my time but no money lose however project is behind schedule, no huge tragedy. Don't know who gives 5 stars might look good but if done wrong you are going to have big issues later on. Definitly want to see how people are doing stuff. Buyer beware.
