Dr. Michelle has made such a wonderful difference for my son in a short time. She brings a positive energy to their tutoring sessions, and has been able to engage him enthusiastically even through tough lessons. Already we have seen an improvement in his grades and attitude towards school. I look forward to a long successful relationship together.

I hired a tutor for my 1st grader, he is behind in reading, so I can only say good things about Ms Hernandez. She is always on time, has a lot of patience, and helps my son in reading. So far, we only had 3 lessons with her, but I expect a lot of changes in my son's reading.

My daughter worked with Chris for SAT review and her score jumped 150 points. She would not have been accepted to her school of choice without this improvement. Thanks Chris!

I previously worked with Miriam at Huntington Learning Center for 3 years. In my time there I saw the transformation in children, who were intitially weary of math, turn into children who were excited about their lessons. I saw kids come running into the center super excited to show her report cards that had their improved math grades. Miriam is very patient and always finds a way to make the class both enjoyable and educational. If you are looking for a top rated math tutor, look no further.

John Way was my teacher for Physics 1 and Physics C: ME. For the two years that I had him he was great. He always knew what he was talking about and would go in depth in his explanations, which allowed me to really grasp the concepts that he taught. When someone was struggling, he wouldn't just leave them behind, he would spend whatever class time he could on them as well as his lunch time and time after school. He is a teacher that everyone loves and cherishes at McArthur High School.

Melinda worked with our daughter for two years. At the time our daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and she was struggling at school. Melinda was able to bring the best in her. Melinda taught her organizational skills, comprehension and memorization techniques and critical thinking. She helped our daughter in English, Social Sciences, Public speaking and writing. Our daughter went from a C student to an A student. Melinda gave her the boost and self confidence she needed to start high school. We will always be grateful to Melinda. Highly recommended.

Inspiring, enlightening, engaging...excellent! "Ms Calder is the best teacher you could ever have," is what my thirteen year old son says when prompted to say something to his peers about his teacher. "If you have any question about language arts literature or history she can answer them." When you ask me how I feel about Ms Calder, I say that my child is receiving a world class education in her midst. As a child, I was at the top of my class in primary, secondary, and in undergrad. My child is learning more, as a young teen, than I learned in my first years at the university! After one short year with Ms Calder, he is understanding how the world works; and he attracts adults into conversation, engaging and impressing them. He has had a great experience, being her student. Ms. Calder has an innate ability to connect with all of her students and make them highly successful. A young, vibrant mother of four beautiful children, and a highly effective teacher for many years; she embraces each and every one of her students in her classroom as if they were her own. She was very patient with my son, from the start, and read into learning styles and issues. He is understanding concepts much better. He looks forward to going back to school, every day. She has taught students with many different learning styles, too. As a public school teacher, she has overcome many obstacles relating to having inspired children with little appeal for school; and she has brought out the best in the formally gifted children and high achieving. She breaks her teaching into understandable language, yet challenges her students to learn things their parents never imagined they could, at such a young age. She asks intelligent questions to make sure her students "get it." And from what we can tell, her students exceed the averages on standardized tests like end of course exams, and assessments. She had great lesson plans for her students she doesn't just make her students "do the work." She asks questions to make sure that her students understand all of the information that is being presented. She makes sure that you walk away with a great understanding of what is being presented. This is testament to the results her students attain top results in testing situations. I highly recommend Ms. Calder for any profession involving language, writing, and getting the best out of people. I will certainly use her services when my children apply for scholarships and college. -Kathy Diaz, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

For the last 5 months, Andrew has been the first and only person I've gone to for suggestions and edits to my essays. He's helped me with everything from my almost 30 college applications to scholarships and enrichment programs. I've always trusted his judgement, as being a published writer and journalist it goes without saying that he is a pro. He always found a way help me make my stories come across in the most original and true to me way possible. I would call him on the phone when I had writer's block and he would just have a conversation with me and cause me to have an epiphany. He is undoubtedly one of the biggest reasons I'm able to say that not only was I accepted to 20 schools, but I'm attending an ivy league institution this fall, and am also the recipient of a $10,000 scholarship from a foundation. He is extremely patient, humble, and willing to dedicate as much time as necessary to make your writing shine. I couldn't have made it to this point without his guidance.

Ms Annette, as my children refer to her, did an excellent job not only caring for my children, but also provided them with the fundamental education necessary to prepare them for elementary school. I would highly recommend her for any position working with young children.

Ms. Richter is very knowledgeable and is prepared from the first time she meets with the student. She knows how to structure each session to effectively teach and motivate the student. She focuses on what their needs are and then creates a plan to tackle each one while reinforcing each prior lesson. She also communicates with the parent before each session what will be discussed and then after the session is finished takes the time to review and inform the parent what areas the student needs reinforcement and which ones they have successfully mastered. If the student needs reinforcement in any area, she provides the work to be completed by the student with detailed instructions. The next session she reviews the take home assignment and continues with the next subject area that needs to be learned by the student. Most importantly, she has a wonderful disposition - she is kind and patient.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
    • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
    • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
