Great company! They are very friendly and most importantly the food was delicious! The caterers created my menu custom to my needs, wants and visions. They forgot a few things and there were a couple hiccups in the road but they fixed them immediately and in the end, it all ran smoothly! I'm glad I chose them as my caterers.

As this was our first go-around without our mother who ran the best Christmas kitchen ever, we decided to look into catering which then led us to the "private chef" concept offered by Jeffrey Sternberg who owns and operates Rosemary and Thyme Catering. Jeffrey was one of 3 caterers who offered their services through Thumbtack, and right from his online presence, we knew that Jeffrey would be the one who would come through on the home-cooked feel we were seeking. One phone call led to an invitation to his home where we were regaled with samples of his work ... now that is service for you! Planning out the meals was a collaborative effort where we told Jeffrey about all our traditional fare over the 3-day feast with Jeffrey being most accommodating to our habitual dishes but all the while making recommendations here and there which we gladly accepted ... it was a very easy and enjoyable process. Everything was delicious, truly surpassing our expectations. There were even several batches of shortbread made up for our inspection before choosing the version that best matched the type of shortbread we were accustomed to. The cauliflower and celery casseroles were actually better than we had ever made ourselves and the filet roast of beef for the day after Christmas was without a doubt the best we'd ever tasted. If there was any negative to be found, it was simply in that there was way more food prepared for us than we could ever expect to eat ... we froze the leftovers and are still enjoying the odd Jeffrey meal ... talk about getting excellent value for your money! The only exception to the quantity was the gravy that only lasted the one meal of Christmas dinner. And Jeffrey also surprised us with plenty of extras like a 4th appetizer that we had not ordered, dips that we had not ordered for the appetizers, and mayo and mustard spreads for our sandwiches, and the killer was an extra turkey roasted in the oven in case we did not end up being fond of the grilled turkey that he recommended. The one hitch was that the re-heating instructions did not specify "convection" or take into account that all six dishes were to be reheated in the oven simultaneously, so the food was not ready when we were led to believe it would be, but it was well worth the wait in the end because everything was outstanding. Service, service, service ... that is what Jeffrey is all about ... and he really knows what he's doing ... you can just relax or else spend the time you save in the kitchen fretting over more interesting Christmas activities ... Thanks so very much to you Jeffrey ... you saved the Holidays for us ... the best to you and your family in 2016. Lorri H. Jan 07/16

I hired Paul and The Dancing Palate for my wedding on November 20, 2015. Paul was wonderful from the start. We had a tasting right away and it went wonderfully. I had contact more than half a dozen caterers but couldn't get them to be as flexible as Paul was especially for the price. The Dancing Palate is a fantastic value. The food was served on time, warm, and I got many compliments after the wedding. We had 135 guests and a 90 minute sit down dinner. I wanted family style with items served in bowls and sharing, yet sit down at the same time. I didn't find many caterers that would do that, but Paul understood me and it was perfect. A real family meal at our rustic classic wedding. I was very happy with the Dancing Palate and if I had to plan my wedding all over again would hire him back.

From day one meeting David felt like seeing an old friend after a few years apart. He was so easy to work with and was open to all of our ideas and shared ideas of his own. After our wedding was postponed due to the hurricane, David and Josefina made the impossible possible. They literally went above and beyond to make our special day perfect, and that it was, simply perfect. The staff bent over backwards to cater to us and our guests, and the guest were lining up at the buffet line for seconds. The food was so amazing. Our family and friends had so many good things to say about the food. We not only got lucky to find an amazing catering company with Tasty Creations, but we also got lucky in making a new forever friendship with David and Josefina. Thank you so much for everything you did for us. We love you guys!! Kenny and Mimi March 18, 2018

I recently hired Chef Traci for a small dinner party. He was professional, courteous and prompt. Every course he prepared and served was spectacular. I mean out of this world GOOD! It was well worth the cost to be able to have a gourmet meal prepared and served in my home. My guest were delighted and we all enjoyed a lovely evening. I was so impressed with the food and service that I had Chef Traci come back last week when my daughter was visiting from NYC. He prepared a fabulous vegetarian meal for my very strict vegetarian daughter and our friends. Everyone was pleased! Chef Traci is a talented chef, but he also has a great sense of humor and is a joy to have in your home making delicious, healthy meals at affordable prices. I highly recommend this amazing Chef!!!

I hired Exquisite Catering to cater (drop-off) my friend's baby shower. From beginning to end, I was extremely happy with the service I received. Sara was wonderful in helping us set up a menu to meet our needs and budget and was extremely responsive throughout the process. The gentleman who delivered our food and set up the buffet was super nice, on time, and did a great job. Pick up (of dishes, pans, etc) was also a breeze. The most important part...everyone loved the food!! Highly recommended and will definitely use again!

We had the privilege of working with Cynthia and her husband for our September 3, 2016 wedding. We opted for a more relaxed wedding- it was at our church, our 100 guests sat at round tables for the ceremony and reception. It started at 9:30 am. Cynthia and her staff had planned to be there at 7:30. When I arrived at the church at 8:15, a few of her staff were there but Cynthia and her husband were not. Of course I was concerned (mostly for their safety, not for us), but my wedding organizer quickly distracted me and I honestly never found out why she arrived late. It's not fair of me to speculate, but I will say this- everything exceeded our expectations! Cynthia had pastries and beverages (juices, tea, coffee) set up so guests could have something before the ceremony began. Once the ceremony was over, Cynthia and her staff quickly set up the buffet line down the aisle, as we had talked about beforehand. She coordinated our colors (navy and coral) and our beachy theme in her napkins and signs. Although my husband and I did not have time to enjoy the food, we heard amazing things from guests....there were hardly any leftovers, which is always a good sign. We even had her stick to making food for 125, even when we had our final RSVP count of 101. They DEVOURED the food! I made sure I at least took time for a bite of chicken and waffles as that was the most exciting item to me. Cynthia was a joy to work with ahead of time. Detail oriented, very open to listening to my ideas, grasped the feel we were going for. She and her husband came to my then fiancé' house for a tasting. She ordered the kind of coffee we wanted even though it's not what she normally uses. The staff cleaned up after our reception and had the small amount of leftovers packed and ready for us. I would post pictures, but I don't have them on this phone. Hopefully I can come back in and do that soon. All I can say is hire Cynthia! She LOVES what she does, and she loves people! That, plus awesome food, makes her the best of the best in my book!!!

Lori catered a dinner party for 7 in our home. She was so lovely to work with from day one. She was very professional, tidy and her pricing is fair. She is very flexible with food allergies and all types of dietary restrictions. The food was tasty--especially the bacon candy and the chocolate mousse. Overall she is a delight and I would enthusiastically recommend her to anyone. Her assistant Deb was also fabulous and a pleasure to work with.

This was the first time I had used Paella VIP. And I was very much pleasantly surprised. I did not know what to expect. Jorge, our cook, and the owner, came to our home when promised. He set up all of his cooking gear and food. We did not have to give him anything. He even had his own table (with skirt) and all of the utensils. He even served our guests. Food was delicious! Overall experience was outstanding. I highly recommend this company.

Best choice for my wedding! From the moment a met Chefs Valeria and Alex I knew I had made the right choice. They understood the challenges of my venue and the mix of guests, and helped me tailor the menu for the evening. They even crafted a cocktail menu with unique names just for us! The day of the wedding it was all perfect, I heard nothing but great things from all my guests about the food, presentation and professionalism of the staff. It was an overall amazing experience working with this group, they really go out of their way to accommodate and work with you, plus the food its absolutely delicious!! Thank you again! We booked Jose for our annual girls trip dinner. He was very professional and his work quality was outstanding. His food was delicious. His famous chocolate brownies are to die for (wish I could have one right now 👌🏼). Jose is very kind and polite and his prices are unbeatable. Not only did Jose catered our dinner, he also took some pics for us. (Jack of all trades! Lol). I will definitely book Jose again if we return to Florida.

The food was absolutely amazing, I ordered the mushroom flatbread, shrimp tacos, and the tomatoe mozzarella sandwich. The flavors chef Mark has created with his menu is truly something special, I love the fact that everything is local and fresh. His simplistic style shines through in every dish, I honestly wanted to try everything on the menu but I couldn’t eat anymore lol.... It’s only a matter of time until this blows up into something huge. Mark, Jackie, and Shannon are a great team and I wish you guys nothing but the best. I will definitely be coming back to try everything else. (Also want to try the brunch menu)

They are the absolute best! My wedding guests were talking about how delicious the meal was way after the wedding was over! It was great quality and they were SO friendly! David listened to what I wanted and delivered beyond what I expected. I couldn’t have asked for a better caterer. Best decision ever!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
