The guests and the hosts were beyond satisfied!! The food was delicious, the servers and bartenders were professional, and the chefs were awesome! Will gladly do business with them again! Although we used them for a corporate event on a yacht, we would recommend them for any occasion.

Chef Paul was excellent! I decided to hire him based on his responsiveness and menu variety. He was easy to work with and communication was quick and concise. For our 2 catered meals we had more than enough food and the food was absoluletly deliscious! Chef Paul and Chef Mike went over and above to make sure the kitchen of the property we were renting was clean, both before and after cooking and serving. I would highly recommend The Dancing Plate for any catered event. It was a pleasure to simply sit down and enjoy a wonderful meal right where we stayed.....and not have to clean up afterwards! One of the best vacation decisions we made.

Hired this company for our wedding through The Knot. We were so pleased with the services that we wanted to let everyone know. This is truly an all inclusive catering company. They were able to find us a horse and carriage at a very reasonable price. Josefina and Chef David are an awesome pair. The dedication to making sure our wedding was perfect. The food down to the service was what we were looking for. I would certainly book this company again for any event that I have. Great Job Tasty Creations keep up the great service and dedication it show in everything you do.

Chef Traci was a great addition to a hosting event that we had. He was timely, flexible and accommodating to the dietary needs of our guests. In addition, Chef Traci went above and beyond for additional house staff and even made special food for the kids. Everyone was very pleased. We look forward to working with Chef Traci in the future.

I booked this caterer for my wedding on 12/30/17. I'm Jamaican and my husband and I wanted the jerk chicken with rice and pease. We also had the chance to taste the food prior to booking for the wedding. We worked with Kathy and told her what we like and didn't like at the tasting. The food was awesome at the wedding ! I would like for the chef to be recognized. We had so many compliments about the food. To my regret i didn't get the chance to take any pictures of the food. The servers were so kind and punctual. They provided awesome services. Thank you all for the great work.

Best choice for my wedding! From the moment a met Chefs Valeria and Alex I knew I had made the right choice. They understood the challenges of my venue and the mix of guests, and helped me tailor the menu for the evening. They even crafted a cocktail menu with unique names just for us! The day of the wedding it was all perfect, I heard nothing but great things from all my guests about the food, presentation and professionalism of the staff. It was an overall amazing experience working with this group, they really go out of their way to accommodate and work with you, plus the food its absolutely delicious!! Thank you again! Hulda and Mike!

Let us start by saying WOW and AMAZING! We are so late writing this review and apologize for that... My husband and I were married back in January of 2016. As many of us that plan a wedding, this was our first time so we did not know what to expect. We planned everything ourselves, found the venue, found a caterer, photographer, Dj etc. We had a budget and it was quickly approaching the maximum. We heard weddings were expensive blah blah blah, but until you pay for one you may never know... We interviewed several Thumbtack bakers and taste tested their product. We met a lot of great candidates, but non of them "took the cake" like Claudia at "Cake it to the limit" Claudia is an artist and a visionary. Jose and I had an idea to incorporate our centerpiece (a silver metal round globe that was a candle holder and had an unusual design to illuminate light) We sent Claudia a picture of the centerpiece and asked her if she could incorporate it into her design. We did not see her idea until the day of, we were amazed! It was elegant, stunning and delicious! Our caterer, Laura, from Laura Ashley catering (also recommended) told us that they have never had a fondant cake that was so easily able to cut and serve. Needless to say we highly recommend this company and have already had the opportunity to recommend her to others. Claudia is professional and a delight to work with. Thankyou for making our day extra special!

Chef O is the best! and I'm not one to hand out praise very freely. The food was on point and very well executed (we should have ordered even more :) even though we were very well fed), service and attention to detail was top notch, and we felt like we were dealing with an old friend and not just a chef for hire. You won't regret using these guys. Thanks again chef! We will be using you again real soon.

Jimmy catered a "Bend and Brunch" baby shower for myself and about 15 guests and did a fantastic job! I've never used a chef service before but now I can't wait to find opportunities to use Chef Jimmy - it made the event so much more enjoyable because I didn't have to worry about planning, shopping, setting up or cleaning up. Would highly recommend!

Kerry is an amazing pastry chef and beautiful person on the inside and out! I sent her the party invite and asked if she can match the design on the cake, add watercolor effect and nautical elements for my sister's baby shower. She matched the cake design perfectly and added her personal touch as well. It was tastefully done and came out elegant and way beyond my expectations! The cake was not only beautiful but also so tasty! Everyone were impressed and now two weeks later we still talk about it. Kerry was also professional and punctual. She kept communicating on the progress, asking questions, keeping me informed and delivered on time. Perfection!

I hired Mauricio for a golf trip dinner with 9 of my friends. We fairly negotiated a price and then chose the menu. Mauricio was professional and very responsive by text. On the evening of the dinner he showed up early and was very accommodating when our timing changed. Of course the best part was the meal! He's an excellent chef and my friends are still raving about the evening. I would highly recommend Mauricio for an evening dinner event. He was fantastic!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
