"Alice went ABOVE AND BEYOND. We did a trial a couple months before the wedding and she spent so much time at the trial to get things correct. We took pictures and told her I'd see her on the wedding day. However, my mom was looking for a good hair dresser to fix her hair (because her normal hair dresser didn't want to do the highlights and lowlights she requested). Alice offered to do that for my mother the day before the wedding as well as cut her hair. A couple days before our wedding, we discovered a tropical storm in the Gulf. The weather projected at our 5PM wedding was 100% thunderstorms because of the outer bands coming in. I contacted Alice a few days before hoping to move our wedding time up from 5PM to 9AM in the morning. Alice was MORE than accommodating. She not only said she could come early in the morning to help me get my hair done for a 9AM wedding instead...but she ALSO offered to let me come to my mom's hair appointment the day before the wedding so she could pre-curl it to help it set for the next day!!! She was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I would hire her again in a heartbeat!!! "

"Jon provided us with the most spectacular ceremony we could have every asked for. When we initially met with him for our consultation, he was super helpful and very knowledgeable! He made the ceremony planning very easy and enjoyable! Our wedding was 12/27/2015 and I loved how flexible Jon was with our guests, bridal party, and parents, especially since many of our guest did not speak the best English. I honestly could not be more happy with the decision we made to go with Jon as our wedding officiant. The ceremony was the most important aspect of our wedding for me and he made sure that everything ran smoothly and that the ceremony was memorable, and most importantly meaningful. Jon, thank you very much for the service you provided. It was fantastic! "

"Joanne did an amazing job being the officiant at my wedding! She was early, supportive, prepared and focused at our wedding. She was quick to respond to emails in planning before the wedding. She was so organized and provided us with the perfect wording in what she said at our ceremony! I highly recommend her! I never had a doubt about her through out the planning and during the wedding!"

"Sam was the best person I could have chose to officiate my wedding back in 2014. He listened to everything my husband and I asked for and made the wedding very personal. If I had to choose anyone to ever officiate another ceremony again, I would hands down choose Sam! Thank you 😘"

"He was absolutely fantastic! Also Super reasonable. My husband and I lost (he decided he couldn’t make it) our wedding officiant two days before the wedding however we did find Pastor Gunter just in time for our wedding. Last minute deals can be hell but Pastor Gunter made it beautiful and fun. Overall experience was amazing."

"We chose Chris McCarthy of St. Augustine to officiate our wedding. She was very professional and helpful. Chris is a wonderful person who loves what she does and it shined through in the amazing job she did officiating our wedding. We had a small intimate ceremony and it was perfect. I could go on and on but I'll just say that if you're looking for a wedding officiant please seriously consider Chris McCarthy. Thank you Thumtack for making this process so easy and again to Chris for making our day so special. "

"I could not have asked for a better officiant for our wedding! David and Toni were so charming and professional throughout the ceremony and into the reception. It is not an easy thing to choose the person to perform a wedding ceremony using the internet, but I assure you that David is a fantastic choice. He has a wonderful attitude and made me feel very comfortable. We didn't even need a rehearsal and it was flawless. I was so grateful to both David and Toni, who took a day from their vacation to drive 95 miles to start us on our lives together. I would recommend them for your event. You will not be disappointed at all. I am so very pleased! Thank you both so much for your gracious and professional demeanor on such a potentially stressful day! We are blessed! Morgan"

"A+++!!! Gabby and I couldn’t have had a better experience than choosing Francesco to photograph our wedding! Going in, we knew exactly what we wanted, namely a few staged shots of the family and a lot candid shots during the ceremony. After looking through the websites of 6 or 7 photographers in the Jacksonville/St Augustine area, Francesco’s portfolio definitely stood out and he seemed a far better photographer than all of the other options. We had no problems communicating via email and by phone prior to the event and were looking forward to finally meeting on the day of. As it was a small beach wedding, we were worried about the lighting but Francesco was two steps ahead and already thinking of how best to utilize the beach, trees, and surrounding nature. We had such a great time that we invited him back to the reception to celebrate with our closest friends and family. We couldn’t have been happier when the photographs arrived. They were exactly what we wanted and a perfect way to memorialize our special day. Anybody can buy a fancy camera, but Francesco has an eye for photography that either comes naturally or takes years of training. It was an absolute pleasure getting to know him and I hope our paths cross again one day so we thank him again in person. Five stars across the board. It was truly a wonderful experience from start to finish. <3 Matt & Gabby"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
