Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following lifespans for different materials:

Roofing material Lifespan
Asphalt 20 years
Metal 40-80 years
Copper 70 years
Clay/Concrete 100+ years
Slate 60-250 years
Simulated Slate 10-35 years

Source: InterNACHI

There are a variety of roofing materials available and appropriate for residential applications. When choosing roofing materials, it's essential to consider the look you want, your budget and the climate in your area.

Asphalt shingles are one of the most popular types of roofing materials because they are affordable and relatively easy to install. They come in various colors and styles designed to last decades if properly maintained. Asphalt shingle roofs also have a higher fire resistance than other roofing materials (like wood shakes), making them an ideal choice for homes in areas prone to wildfires or other natural disasters.

Metal roofs are becoming increasingly popular because they offer superior durability, fire-resistance and energy efficiency compared to traditional asphalt shingle roofs. They are available in various colors and styles, making them a good option if you want more customization options. Metal roofs also require less maintenance than other types of roofing materials.

Tile roofs are an excellent option for homeowners looking for long-term durability and multiple style options. Tile roofs can have great longevity with proper maintenance, making them an ideal choice for those who don’t want to replace their roof too often. Tile roofs typically cost more than asphalt shingle or metal roofs, so if budget is an issue, this might not be the best option for you. Keep in mind that tile roofs are often made out of clay or concrete — both of which are durable.

Slate roofs are known for lasting a lifetime, which means you probably won't have to replace this type of roof. Slate is durable, a curb-appeal booster and a favorite among homeowners. Just keep in mind it can get a bit pricey.

No matter which type of material you choose, make sure that you hire a top-rated professional who knows how to properly install your home's new roof. Search Thumbtack for roofing contractors and companies in your area today.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Why should I get a roof inspection?

In short, a roof inspection can help protect your home while saving you money in the long run.

Roof inspections provide homeowners with crucial information about the condition of their roofing system. A professional inspector will search your roof for signs of damage that could lead to severe damage and trigger the need for expensive repairs down the road. Start searching for a top-rated roof inspector near you today.

What happens during a roofing inspection?

Roof inspectors are trained to look for signs of a failing roofing system that could lead to damage — especially water and structural damage. Your home's roofing materials may look great from the ground, but it's difficult to see potential damage unless you take a closer look. A roof inspector can do just that.

During an inspection, the professional will typically look for issues that may have occurred during installation and manufacturing. They’ll also keep an eye out for damage caused by normal wear and tear, as well as extreme weather events. They might also access your attic to see if there are signs of a leak in your roof.

Here’s a short list of common things a contractor will look out for during a roof inspection:

  • Damage caused by hail, wind, snow and rain
  • Missing, broken, buckling, curling or cracked shingles
  • Roof decay, rot, moss, mildew and mold
  • Rust around the flashing
  • Damaged chimneys and vents
  • Holes, gaps and punctures that could cause a roof leak
  • Water stains and ventilation issues

Hiring a roofing inspector prevents you from having to do the dangerous work of climbing onto your roof. Plus, inspectors know how to assess potential damage and determine the best way to repair your roof and prevent the need for more expensive repairs in the future. Start searching for a roof inspector on Thumbtack today.

When should I get my roof inspected?

Experts typically recommend that you have your roof professionally inspected at least once a year. But you also may want a licensed professional to inspect your roof during these circumstances:

  • You're buying or selling a home
  • You're filing an insurance claim
  • Before or after a contractor does major work on your roof

Search the Thumbtack site for experienced roof inspectors near you. You can contact them directly to set up a time to conduct the inspection, and learn more about their pricing structure and services.

Geco Roofing did an excellent job on my roof! Within 2 weeks of getting the quote, a new roof was being installed on my home. I couldn’t have asked for better professionalism, punctuality, workmanship, and for a very fair price.

I’m so glad I used Busy Bee to replace the roof on my residential home. Matthew is very reasonable, friendly and honest. I received three quotes but they have the best quote for the job. David and his crew had to replace a lot of rotted plywood and I’m so glad they did not charge me an enormous amount for additional materials and additional labor. I’m so happy with my new roof. I will definitely recommend them to anyone who asks for a roof replacement.

He explained in detail the areas the required fixing and went out of his way to speak to people in within the industry to help us with the house issues. I was contacted almost immediately after my inquiry on Thumbtack. Kevin came out the next day and emailed quote. I called and left message for him, and he called back within the hour and answered all my questions clearly and concisely, no games. I had received quotes from 4 other roofers and chose Bay to Bay for their no-nonsense, professional, prompt service and communication. The work was scheduled and completed within 3 business days of scheduling. It rained right after the repair was complete, and it was a great test--no more leaking! Other companies wanted to either repair the whole roof, or remove large chunks and replace (flat roof). I was happy with Kevin's explanation that the leak was only in the transition with the shingled roof. The roof was just 10 years old, and this seemed most appropriate. Thanks for great, honest service!

Time for a new roof? Ugh, you may be thinking to yourself, I DO NOT want to go through an arduous process, lengthy sales pitch, or "buy now and save $1000"s" when choosing a roofing company. Save yourself the headache and contact Beams Roofing & Contracting. They are fair, competitively priced and provide SUPERB service all around! We found Gary Hammerbacher to be honest, prompt, pleasant, friendly and straightforward. He and Wes Beams provided a detailed estimate of costs in a professional, courteous, quick manner. Although we were not ready to do the roof at the time of the estimate, Gary kept in touch periodically (in a non annoying way) to see if we had any questions, had set a date, etc...I assured him BEAMS would have our business and I meant it! When we were ready to schedule, Gary came to the house and we went over every detail of the contract, provided a deposit, selected shingles and a flat roof color from a WIDE RANGE of colors and options, and a few days later Gary contacted us as soon as he knew the project would begin. "Homer Hauls it" delivered the dumpster early, (super nice guys also). Same morning Gary was punctual, super friendly and introduced us to the crew, led my a very knowledgeable crew leader named Alfonso and the crew got to work. TOP DOG says it all, this TEAM ARE WORKHORSES! I cannot say enough good things about the work they did in just 2 and a half days! From start to finish they worked their butt off. The tear off is messy, but you would never know it to look at our yard, the clean-up is meticulous! Throughout the entire process Gary was always communicating with us via phone, text or here onsite to see if we were satisfied, had any questions, or to keep us updated on the progress. (not the disappearing salesman we've all met!) That said, we have a beautiful new roof in St. Pete. I would recommend Beams Roofing without hesitation!! Save yourself some time and agony, just call them!

Came when he said he would come. Explained the problem area, I had an other roofer come out who confirmed the problem. Tim Rice fixed the roof and guaranteed it for six months. It rained really hard for the next two days after the repair and no problem.

First let me say, my roof looks great. The reason for the 3 star rating is in regard to a few things. I wasn't told ahead of time that the crew would need access to power. I had to leave work to give them access to my back yard where the outlet was. This is the first time I've had my roof replaced and have NO IDEA as to what would be required. I was relying on the company to tell me. The crew then left the gate open and my dog got out. Luckily, 6 hours later he was found 1.6 miles away. When I brought this to Brian's attention, he did apologize and brought it up to the crew chief who then denied leaving the gate open. While I take full responsibility for not checking the gate myself, a heads up from the crew chief that there was an issue closing it would have been nice. Not only did it endanger my pets, it left my yard vulnerable to other animals and thieves. Again, they did a fantastic job on my roof. And I am happy with that result.

We contacted them after a roof leak from a tropical storm. They were there first thing the following morning where they provided a very reasonable quote, did a temporary fix to prevent further damage and came back after the storm had fully passed to do the full job. They were friendly yet professional. We will definitely use them again.

I'm very disappointed they didn't repair soffit and fascia which I was very specific on repairing since we are repainting the house. I asked them to repair fascia and soffit, but they only fixed the roof and didn't fix fascia and soffit. As I am an Asian woman, not familiar with some contractors terminology, I believed the estimate, saying "Leak at transition from shingle roof to flat roof- showing in soffit", includes fixing fascia and soffit. I clearly sent the damaged area pics before estimate day and clearly pointed at the damaged soffit and fascia and asked him to repair the area during the estimate day. Tim expected I understood the document and did not mention he isn't "including fixing fascia and soffit", and there wasn't any word "I don't fix fascia and soffit" at the estimate. Their Thumbtack page showed up at the first on Thumbtack when I searched "Fascia and Soffit Repairs" and some of their reviews said "they do good fascia and soffit repairs". I had to hire a second contractor to finish the repair work for that area and go over my plan budget and timeline. I asked Thumbtack to ask them to pay only $300 for the additional repairs I had to outsource, but they didn't want to do that. I'm so sad how they treated me.
