OMG...what a great experience with Chef Antwan. He was very professional and the food was to die for. He was on time, very personable, attentive and approachable. We are a fun loving high spirited bunch and he fit right in with my mom, my aunts, my cousin, and I. (we also have an inside joke about my choice of dinnerware but I'm not going to share it...lol). We were not from the area but after reading the reviews and speaking with him on the phone I knew he was the chef for us. He worked with us on the menu, did exactly what he said he was going to do and we loved every minute of it. We were served strawberry arugula salad with candied pecans (so freaking delicious), grouper and grits for an appetizer, filet mignon, shrimp with mango salsa, and smashed potatoes for the entrée and red velvet cake for dessert. I could go on and on but will stop there. He is willing to travel so if you're looking for a good, reasonable chef....try Chef Antwan...you will not be disappointed. Shika & crew.

Chef Tamara and her assistant Debbie were amazing! The appetizers, dinner and desserts were delicious, she even made sure there were plenty of options for our vegan/vegetarian guests. Every item and platter was artfully presented. They took care of every detail of set-up, serving and clean-up so I was free to enjoy the evening. They also brought containers and placed leftovers in the frig which we enjoyed the next day! I would highly recommend The Island Chef for any event you are planning and will absolutely call her the next time I am planning an event.

Chef Vivian is a class act! We recently hired Chef Vivian for a surprise anniversary dinner June 2015 and we are still talking about the experience! We were on vacation from and hired Chef Vivian while in town. She came highly recommended by the rental property. The food was simply delicious and Chef Vivian was so gracious in her total performance. Her food is just fantastic from start to finish! Not only did she cook great food, we were also so amazed with her total presentation. She managed to cook an impressive full meal, including appetizer and dessert; plus she placed all leftovers neatly away for us and completely cleaned the kitchen while we enjoyed an incredible meal. We wanted to help, but before we knew it, she had everything done! She was so professional all the way and just a joy to be around. She was engaged with our guests and really made them feel special. My whole family enjoyed her tremendously and we would with no hesitation hire Chef Vivian again. Chef Vivian was so helpful getting to know the party before her arrival and helped us plan the perfect meal for our family. She takes the time to know who she's servicing and we appreciated her genuine approach with our family during her visit. She is top notch to work with. You won't be sorry!

I gave this company this rating because it is a first class event provider. The staff truly made sure our guests were well served during the appetizers both serving the guests and making sure the table appetizer were always full. They did the menu from appetizer to main course and the food was delicious they handled serving dinner for the guest without a hitch and we had over 60 guests. The bartender was fantastic she made everyone feel at home and she even knew some of the guests names by the end of the night. And then they cleaned up and I mean they really cleaned up making our after party cleanup much easier. I highly recommend this company.

I attended a conference that was managed by KD's catering. It was the most organized and well planned events I have attended in a long while. Danielle has a special passion for perfection and the event was so enjoyable. She made it look easy. The best part was the dessert table. I broke my diet more than once and was very happy about it!

I hosted a party for 15 people for my Dad’s 90th B-Day and was nervous about getting everything together, but one phone call to Cheryl changed all that. She came up with a fabulous menu, great table setting ideas and even brought some of her own props for the table. Everything was absolutely delicious and done to perfection and when Cheryl left we would of never know there had just been a dinner party for 15 in our house. I can’t wait to have another occasion so that she can do her magic for us again.

Really loved Kim and Cam! They were personable and sweet for our bachelorette party's casual setting. We asked questions about how they cooked, so it was a mini-lesson for us! I really appreciate Kim's responsiveness and professionalism as well. She tended to my vegetarian needs which was great. We got a Thai menu and our faves were the coconut soup, egg rolls, and cake for dessert.

Emerald Catering was phenomenal. I had a reception in which 2 days before, the beverage vendor had to cancel. I had a vision of specialty drinks in which Laura and her team brought to life. Everyone loved the food: Prime Beef Sliders, Mimosa Salad, Gourmet Sandwiches, Deviled Eggs (love the garlic flare), along with condiments which were beautifully arranged. I would highly recommend Emerald Catering. They are my go to.

The catering service of pasta and different of elements that go with it was provided. This is good for medium to large groups where the hosts do not have a lot of time and need someone who can take care of those needs. Customer service was very good. Presentation was excellent. All the food was cooked where applicable to meet expectations. There are things that can be worked on as a new business. For example, a salad should have all the fixings separate as some people may like some of the items but not all of them. In addition, some people are lactose intolerant to vegan and would not be able to eat cheese on the salad. The customer should be able to pick and choose which items they want for their salad. Another example, would be to have gluten-free pasta as needed due to consumers may have a gluten allergy. Overall, my experience with the food was good and very tasty.

We have used Kirkland Kuisine several times for our weeknight dinners. Due to my busy schedule at a hospital and three hungry mouths to feed at home KK was the perfect solution for having a delicious hot meal delivered right when I'm getting home. In addition to home delivery meals, when my oldest daughter was expecting her first child, KK catered her baby shower. Everything was absolutely perfect and delicious!!! What a stress reliever that was! I would recommend KK to anyone for all their meals and/or catering needs.

Terrell is an excellent chef. He catered the Healthy Lifestyles Tampa Bay open house for me. I cannot express the high level of professionalism, how easy it is to work with Rerrell and not to forget, the exemplary food. My quest continue to mention the party’s food. I would highly recommend him for any engagement that being small with a few friends or party. In fact, I obtained his services for my next party. Great job Terrell and many thanks, Dr Q

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
